Is comboing into xray worth it?

Lately i’ve been debating if even combo-ing into an xray is worth it. I mean, yeah, you do get hit confirmation, but it usually scales bad enough that is it really worth the scale just for a hit confirm? Or is it smarter to wait for a slip and punish with an xray? Some character’s this isn’t really an issue, but for some it is. For me, playing as Reptile isn’t not really worth it, his xray works much better to punish, and i can net an easy 30+% damage with no meter, and 40+ with one. Using 3 to net 42/43 isn’t good for him. I’d just like your opinion.

If it will end the match, then go for it.

Apply the same logic for using a Super in SF4. If it will win you the match (or round if you think it’s important for you), then burn the meter. Else the raw Xray punish is probably best saved.

If your opponent has meter than go for it. If he has no meter than save it. Combo breakers are a big part of this game.

I think it depends on your character. I mean I play Stryker and Sub-zero, with Stryker I think I’ve maybe done it twice ever, since it’s much better to use his EX moves both for damage and utility. His midscreen damage is already scary and for two bars in/near the corner I can get 3% more than his x-ray combo. Sub-zero on the other hand I generally use as a match ender. His tools don’t get fantastically better when you ex-them, although slide and clone both are good, and I play him more for traps than raw damage. Plus his doesn’t scale in combos and so it’s a great way to suddenly shock your opponent with changing a 33% combo into a 47%.

only on those low damage characters, if your character can’t do 40+ without xray i’d say use it…the faster you end the match the better

I agree, it depends on the character, and how they use meter.

Second and third rounds if it can get you the round, go for it. Otherwise, save your X-Ray for a punish (or whatever is best for the character you’re using), or just plain save your meter for EX/Breaker.

Seems like this is more of a specific thing than a general use thing. I play Noob so far, and sometimes slapping his easy to connect X-Ray onto one of his low damage mid-screen combos can help me finish off an opponent. When I play as Kung Lao though where even my novice skills will let me nail 30% + combos, I hold onto the bar for ex moves and breakers.

As every one else has said, it ore likely character dependent, but I would personally say its more of player dependent. But the idea is generally the idea is the same.
