I own Battle Fantasia so yeah, I’m more or less down for any 2D fighting game at the end of the day. Sounds like there are definitely some options though, so PM me with info and I’ll definitely hit you guys up when I’m in town (about two weeks). I’ve got a setup (PS3) as well, so if a few people are doing casuals, I can probably help out in that area.
Doesnt it seem like there would be enough people to hold some kind of weekly RANBATs or something? Aren’t there a couple people out of Cedar Rapids that play KoF and UMVC3 as well?
There is 4 of us in Iowa City and West Liberty that i know of. 5 when ninja gets here. If you do have a place to do weeklys we would be willing to go
I’m down for driving to W. Liberty for some games depending on timing and that. It sounds the same as driving up to Dubuque (which I will probably start doing again after the CR tourney and when KoF or GG is on the menu).
I would run JUST KOF and GG for that.
GGs to my fellow Dubuque players last night. Hope we don’t disappoint this Saturday.
So seriously, who is going to get SFxT and play it?
capcom won’t be receiving any money from me for that train wreak, nor any other games for at least a while.
I’m getting it.
Why do you think it’ll be a train wreck? I have to say, it looked like more fun when they didnt have that Gem system…wtf is that about???
I wonder if the game holds any interest to Tekken players since it’s not 3D

That poster has so many typos…
Alright, I’m bored and haven’t had a good topic to rant on for a while, so why not?
First off, right from the moment the game starts up, it’s completely visually unappealing to me in any way. Lets look at a couples screenshots:
Alright so first this image I stole from a youtube vid so the resolution is a bit wonky. So the first red flag is that they just blatantly re-used all the SF4 models which are ugly in the first place, then tried to make the tekken models in a similar way. But they didn’t even really succeed, paul in this shot looks more like he was photoshopped in than actually designed in the engine. The the whole way the tekken characters are lit looks way darker than the SF characters, which is the common theme of all the screenshots I’ve seen. The background, well, they are just blatantly going for goofy stuff happening and it just ends up being distracting and stupid looking to me.
Besides this background just flat out looking like a ridiculous mismatching of graffiti and poor coloring choices, this is seriously the look they went with for kuma. Oh, and the UI is ugly and has too much going on color wise.
And then there’s the gem activation stuff, which really I feel speaks for itself.
Conclusion: The games visuals are not appealing to me in any way. I’d rather play against a million of the worst blazblue character designs than what capcom’s done here.
Next up: the gameplay. Now, this is all second hand and conjectural because obviously I haven’t played the game yet, but the engine just sounds kinda dumb. Here’s a combo video from marksman to use as a reference point:

So, besides the characters looking even worse in motion than in the screenshots, they move in absolutely ridiculous ways because of the way the chain system works and the speed of moves. Great. But the topic at hand is the gameplay. As far as I can tell, capcom managed to make a chain heavy game, but then put stupid links in everywhere because you can’t chain into a special move unless you EX it. But my personal favorite moments are where they simply chain into an EX special, tag cancel it, and full charge a special to get a super and do like 40% of basically all unrecoverable damage. And as far as I know, you can tag cancel an EX special on block, so welcome to stupid mixups forever, especially since every report I’ve heard about the game is that you build meter like crazy. Ah, and how about charging a special move to a point and canceling it so that your next move (note: not just that move) is automatically a counter hit? Sure, whatever. Oh and remember pandora mode? I don’t even feel like I need to explain how much is wrong with pandora mode, plenty of other people have done that a lot.
And then theres that bright glaring problem that everyone’s been talking about so much, the gems. Besides blatantly being a cash grab in the form of DLC, they pretty much prove that capcom doesn’t give a damn about the competitive community. 4 minutes to setup gems? Sweet. Oh yea, I know capcom has said you can use USB drives to do that, but until I’ve actually seen that in action I won’t give capcom the benefit of the doubt on that, especially since the ps3 only has 2 usb drives in the first place which makes the whole thing questionable.
Lastly: I just don’t trust capcom anymore. Like seriously, SF4 has turned into the most boring game in the world thanks to peoples complaining. Marvel, they claimed they were going to fix XF and aerial exchange and we all know how that turned out. And then they just blatantly decide its time to troll their own fans on the megaman issue because they are too pissed that one of the people in their company left because they weren’t willing to listen to him point out legitimate problems they are having. So now, instead of Inafune who is awesome and responsible for the creation of great game franchises like megaman and dead rising, as well as being a major player in a whole lot of capcom’s other successful games, we get Ono, who outside of street fighter 4, has produced such smash hits as shadow of rome, chaos legion, capcom fighting evolution, and other games no one cares about.
I’d spend time to re-read this and clean it up, but I have a feeling no one will read it anyways, so in a nutshell:
TL;DR: Game is ugly, combo system is dumb, capcom is acting like a 6 year old over Inafune, and Ono is an idiot.
I read the whole thing!
The only thing I disagree about is Megaman. I dont have the attachment to him so I think what they did is hilarious.
I’ve already got SFxT paid for via that newegg sale.
I won’t disagree with anything Murph said (though if someone wants to burn 3 meters to mix me up or do 40%, they’re more than welcome to do so). THAT said, however, I could probably go on a rant that long about every fighter known to human existence. Hell, KOF13 is my favorite game right this minute for so many reasons, and I could probably go on a rant that long about how HD combos turn every character with full Drive Meter into roughly the same exact character (also, I hate watching long combos). That’s an oversimplification, but you get the point.
I had fun with MVC3 for nearly a year but I only can tolerate so much of a game that allows bad players (like myself) to put nothing in and take so much from the other player. May very well be the same with SFxT, but in all honesty if I get a year’s worth of time out of a $45 game (again, newegg sale) and have some seriously fun experiences, well…I’m not going to think I wasted my money, that’s for sure.
In other words…worst-case scenario with SFxT is that I have fun. Yeah. I’ll live with that.
It’s not so much about having attachment or being a fan of the franchise, it’s the way that they continue to piss all over a lot of their fans and one of their former best producers. If they were still supporting the megaman franchise, then box art megaman would have actually been funny and somewhat creative. In this case it’s nothing but another smack to it’s fans faces and a cheap shot at Inafune. Capcom knows its fans want more megaman, they know it’s popluar just by virtue of the sales of 9 and 10. Not to mention that people have been super vocal about it, so what does capcom do? Give frank west a megaman alt. Give zero a megaman alt that could have actually been confused for putting him in, and put in box art megaman. It’s basically capcom reminding everyone that their stance is “Inafune was mean to us, and this is his legacy, so we shall shit all over it”.
Capcom seriously is the most immature company in the industry by a wide margin. So for my salt it’s not so much what they are mocking with their games (megaman), but who they are actually trolling to do so (their fans and inafune).
Exactly what Klaige said. In another context, I’d completely agree and find box art megaman hilarious, but the context and story they put behind it makes it clear how immature they are acting.
You know Mike, I could easily make a rant this long about any game too, but rarely have I had a game that I could make this long of a rant about BEFORE it came out. The gameplay stuff is all tenative since it hasn’t even been released yet, but my understanding from people who have ACTUALLY PLAYED the game is that you build meter like its not even a real thing. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if I end up seeing something like combo into reset with an EX move tag cancel for a mixup, into the same reset off a hit confirm. Thats completely speculative, sure, but thats my understanding of how the engine works at this point and honestly gameplay is a minimal reason in my arugement at this point.
As far as KOFXIII HD combos go, I flat out disagree with HD combos making every character the same. At all. Each character has different ways to try to get into their HD combos, some are much more sensitive to how and where they start it, and different characters get very different rewards for the investments they have to make with it. To say HD mode makes everyone the same isn’t so much an oversimplification as pretty much ignoring everything about how the engine works other than that characters can do combos.
MVC3 is one of the exact reasons I’m not buying into sfxt. MvC3 had its fair share of problems, and capcom seemed generally aware of them and made their intentions to fix the game in ultimate pretty well known. Then they just…didn’t. I don’t know how else I can put that. After that, I just flat out can’t trust them to follow through with things they say.
I’m not trying to convince other people not to buy the game. I honestly could not care less who plays it and for what reason. Name 5.0 asked me about my opinion on the game and so I gave it. If you can have fun with it, good for you, but I personally refuse to support this company which has apparently decided that its most enthusiastic fans and more influential employee’s shouldn’t be listened to for any reason.
It’s also about 1MB.
Will try SFxT, but seriousness is out of the question.
See…We should all just play MK9. The game WITHOUT FAULTS! Haha.
But it’s just like Smash! 4 chars on the screen at once! lolololol
There’s a special place in my heart for Melee though. It would be like a Diet Dr. Pepper to my RC.
