That reminds of of when I was at Season’s Beatings 09 I think it was and they had a setup for this and some dude tried picking WW Guile on me since he kept losing, shit was hilarious.
It was a fun time. Tough tough compettion. It was a big day for me, as i won MvC3 and picked the game i wanted for next weeks mystery tournament. I am going to polish up my arthur for next week.
So, Mike, what are the point standings now?
Standings after week 10 (two weeks left!)
MVC3 Cup
1st - M.C. (79)
2nd - Blake (68)
3rd - Bill (55)
4th - Olli (46)
5th - Adam (23)
6th - Alex, Jackie (19)
8th - Corey (7)
Lots of other people at 6 or less.
Getting kinda scary for me. Blake can win the last two tournaments and I’ll still take 1st, but only if I get 2nd each time. 2nd and 3rd is a tie…dunno how I’m supposed to handle that. I’ll make sure to have prizes for at least top 3, but like I said I dunno if they’ll be games or not beyond top 1 as that’s all I guaranteed at the start…I hate being vague like that, but rent and food come first.
Random Cup
1st - M.C. (105)
2nd - Blake (40)
3rd - Olli (39)
4th - Alex (30)
5th - Bill (28)
6th - Jackie (27)
7th - James (12)
8th - Adam, Stocks (10)
Lots of others with less than 10.
With two weeks left and 1st place each week getting 12 points, it’s still a race between Blake, Olli, Alex, Bill AND Jackie for 2nd. I’m pretty excited to see who gets top 3 between all of you. I’ll try to have random prizes for literally EVERYONE on the list that shows up, but top 3 is where it’s at for the decent stuff.
Edit - In the event that my PS2 does the same thing it did last night, I’ll have to replace SC2, HNK, Arcana Heart and Melty Blood with other games…I have discs for TTT and SF2AE. Replacements will probably be Mario Kart Double Dash (Dubuque loves this game)
and Vampire Savior (PS2 Darkstalkers Collection…but no music, my PS2 doesn’t like it). That’d leave us exactly enough for an 8 person tourney. Any more than that, I’m digging out Dreamcast games regardless.
Either way, I like my chances. MKDD should be a game regardless.
If a tie, FT10 Winner take all.
So kinda off-topic, but when I read “MKDD” I thought in my mind “Mortal Kombat Double Dash.” And that should totally be a game, haha.
Just thought I’d share.
They’d turn it into some Twisted Metal ripoff, it’d be amazingly bad.
MK Armageddon HAS a Kart mode.

^ If you hadn’t posted a vid about that I so would have.
Sup Iowa, this coming MAXOUT is looking to be the biggest and most hype we’ve ever seen. STL is rolling the strongest they ever have, and all of our killers will be in attendance as well.
For some entertainment, check out the KC/STL threads for the ensuing drama leading up to next months showdown.
You know what it takes to get me to a tournament
The lack of (non-Neo-Geo) console release of Rage of the Dragons leaves me salty…and the fact that I never played the game until last night leaves me ashamed. Fun game.
Just a reminder: Monthly is Saturday.
No matter what, this might be the last one until after the New Year. It’s looking like my work schedule might dictate I step away from organizing until the holidays are done and over with.
DBQ Versus Cup #11 Results
MVC3
1st - Olli (Zero/Spencer/Task) (BIONIC OLL’S!)
2nd - Alex (Viper/MODOK/Doom)
3rd - Bill (Wesker/Haggar/Phoenix, Zero/Dante/Akuma)
4th - M.C. (Storm/Ryu/Haggar)
5th - Adam (Wolverine/Akuma/Doom)
6th - Jackie (Dante/Shuma/Doom)
7th - Corey (Hulk/Ammy/Haggar)
Virtua Tennis 2
1st - Bill
2nd - Olli
3rd - Corey
4th - M.C.
5th - Adam, Jackie
Smaller turnout, but probably some of the hypest matches we’ve ever had at the shop. Virtua Tennis 2 was fun even to the people who lost, and MVC3…holy shit, there were arms. Bionic ones, to be exact. And thus they did lay waste to teams. ENTIRE TEAMS, I TELL YOU. More importantly, however…this tournament could have gone to nearly anyone there. Alex, Bill and I went 5-1 through round robin (Olli went 3-3 and rolled all of us in king of the hill), Adam was a combo drop away from sending Olli home, Jackie’s Shuma nearly came back through Alex’s entire team WITHOUT XFC, and Corey’s unorthadox Hulk/Haggar combination was making people sweat. Each match has to be earned, and I like it that way.
Next week is the last week of our ranbat standings cup thingamajig. The secondary tournament is a Mystery Tournament style event with each round being a different game…the ones we haven’t picked from our list. Those are:
PS2
- Tekken Tag
- HSF2
- Soul Calibur 2
- Arcana Heart
- Hokuto No Ken
- Melty Blood AA
- MVC2 (PS3 version?)
Dreamcast
- Power Stone
- Puzzle Fighter
- Dead or Alive 2
- JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
If my HDD craps out, I’ll be adding:
- Pocket Fighter
- Vampire Savior
- Mario Kart: Double Dash
Yo I live in Mount Carroll, IL right now which is an hour south of Dubuque. How often does everyone get together in Dubuque? I remember posting here before and it was weekly. I need to get out of the house though. I play online and lose…a lot… I need to get together with like-minded individuals who have an interest in helping me get better instead of just demolishing me over and over again.
Good stuff.
i have to find a way to make it out to some of these tourneys.
Still weekly. We do a tourney at a local comic shop (Comic World) every Tuesday night at 6:00. MVC3 and one other rotating game.
So, with this upcoming week being the last of our 12-week ranking season, I need an idea for what secondary tournament(s) to run. My thoughts so far:
Focus on one other game.
- We get better at that one game, and evolved competition is always a good thing.
- We always know what’s being played and can practice accordingly.
- Difficult to decide what game that’ll be. Alex HATES SF4, I could care less about Tekken, and no one in Dubuque plays MK9, BlazBlue, or AH3 (…I would…). 3rd Strike is always an option, but the game is dead in nearly every part of the country, even with 3SO’s recent release.
- Kills variety. It’s been really fun having different games each week. I mean, Virtua Tennis 2 was HYPE, and no other place in the WORLD has had Kururin Squash tournaments. I hate to kill that tradition.
Focus on two games.
- Three games total (UMVC3 + two others) isn’t too huge of a workload for people who want to stay competitive.
- Again, set schedule, so practice can be done accordingly.
- A little more variety, and can appeal to more people.
- Not a HUGE workload for people who wanna stay competitive (at our level, anyway), but three games is about the limit and is pushing it at that.
- Still loses that random game every week factor.
Four games (plus one random on months with an extra Tuesday).
- LOTS of variety. Appeal to pretty much everyone at least once a month.
- Set schedule.
- Occasional fifth Tuesday = randomness, and we all like that.
- Seeing your favorite game only once a month sucks.
- Staying semi-competitive in five different games is pretty difficult unless they’re all pretty simple fighters.
Another 12-week, 12-game schedule.
- I don’t think you realize how many games I have to torture you with.
- Usually the most chaotic and fun.
- Unless they’re long-established games in Dubuque (3rd Strike, maybe Tekken 6 or SF4), you won’t see a truly competitive level of play.
Ditch the secondary tournament and just run casuals afterward.
- Probably get out at an earlier time.
- No split focus = usually get better at UMVC3.
- …I like playing random stuff.
- True that we can run casuals after in whatever we want, but it’s difficult to plan what people will wanna play so I’d have to bring ALL my systems EACH night. My back will hate you.
…there are my thoughts.
OR We could play Chu Chu Rocket. Just throwing that out there.
I’m in favor of the two other games plan. Although I’m not sure what games would be appropriate. 3S and AE make the most sense to me, but I really don’t mind anything else (except MK). Especially if it’s one of the anime fighters. Dream game would have to be TvC or ST (HDR, AE).
If it were up to me I’d make everyone play UMvC3, 3S and Accent Core - all three, every week.
…but nobody is going to agree on what games should be played. I think UMvC3 is obviously the only unanimous decision.
- and if you like having your random tournies, keep having them - i think they are an annoying, terrible waste of time and effort, but if you and others get a kick out of it, why would you stop? I always just play casuals afterwards either way…
