Interstellar (from the director of The Dark Knight Trilogy & Inception)

Have a feeling we might see dinosaurs…

batman fucking up dinosaurs

thats what

This movie looks great. Not sure how I feel about Matthew as an astronaut, but the director has definitely earned his stripes, I can’t wait to see it.

I’ve been doing my best to avoid all news of Interstellar but I did see this.

Anybody in NYC might want to check out the Interstellar OculusRift event

OMG NOLAN MAKING A SPACE MOVIE seems to be the general reaction of idiots everywhere

this will be a good netflix movie

Take your lil b ass lovin self out of here.

The movie is opening this week in North America and the UK. I’m curious to see how many here are planning to watch this in IMAX 70MM, 35MM, or just plain digital. I’m in a latter category since my theater refused to play the film format, unfortunately. :expressionless:

I plan to see this movie, but i have questions.

Like, so you have the technology to traverse the solar system in search for another habitable planet like earth, that you intend to i assume come back with that information in a decent amount of time and then gather the residents of earth, and charter these people across the solar system in whatever ships that can do this, and then restart humanity?

That just seems like its doomed to make no sense as a movie. I assume most of earths population has dwindled down to millions, or tens of millions for whatever reason, but i have a feeling a lot of this movie is going to suffer from typical scifi illogical bullshit.

The problem with most scifi movies is that their science doesnt add up. They can do this and that, but cannot seem to do some other hella basic shit. At least in star trek, it wasnt an issue. Theyre like, we got warp drives nigga, we got molecular printers, we got a danger room, we can heal almost any god damn wound or illness, etc… I just hope this movie adds up right, and makes sense. I have my serious doubts.

I just saw this at a local press screening. Thoughtful film.

And for those wondering about science, some…difficult questions were asked. I’m not a scientist, but as presented in the film, the science and the ramifications add up, make sense (and can be very, very tragic).

Reviews are coming in, doing my best to avoid the spoilers and hype train, although I heard the BBC describe it as “a flawed masterpiece”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBeb5OAEwos

So this is kinda like mass effect when they first found the charon relay?

Any of you seen this? Is it good? Since all the nolan films I watched so far didn’t disappointed me.

flawed masterpiece?

How can a masterpiece be flawed? That must be the most contradicting phrase I’ve ever read.

Niggas don’t be knowing the term flawed masterpiece is, step up yo diction…and diversify yo bonds.

My impressions, put in a spoiler in case anyone wants to go in cold. No “spoilers” per se, jus a slight mention of one of the concepts in the movie:

[details=Spoiler]The movie was great. It’s almost the opposite of Inception. Where Inception had a fascinating premise to hide the fact that it’s a character story, here the powerful characters hide the fact that this movie is about the possibilities of its premise.

The theory of relativity comes into play with strong repercussions, especially when it comes to time.

Not that much Nolan-speak. Characters seem to react as naturally as possible, with exposition talk kept to a minimum compared to his other films

I greatly enjoyed it. Heavy film though. [/details]

Saw the 35mm version last night for that throwback effect. Good shit, but may need to watch it again for a better opinion.

First thing I gotta say is:

Spoiler

TARS For President!!!

Without exception, my favorite “character” in the film. His initiative to deactivate the automatic docking and his advice to Cooper in the black hole saved mankind.

The visuals were stellar (no pun intended). I loved how the black hole and worm hole looked. I didn’t once question the realism of the special effects.

I predicted that Cooper was the ghost, although I expected him to be an invisible extradimensional being and not the relativistic midget doing Morse code. Also the duplicitous, sabotaging “Mann Damon” was easy to see through the moment he justified the lie by Prof. Brand. I thought it was very realistic and speaks to the fact that humans are their own worst enemy. ( a la Sunshine)

I liked the movie’s approach on the nonlinear aspect time, and Nolan’s use of it to progress the story. It was probably the most successful thing achieved in the film.

Mild Criticisms:

-Cooper had such an emotional tug-of-war with his kids (notably Murphy), but hardly nothing to say to his father, who regardless of his prompt return from space, would never be seen alive again? I found that odd.

-I was under the impression that they would be visiting an array of potential planets, which was kind of a letdown. It wasn’t a deal breaker, but the trailer and movie length gave the impression of a trek to at least a few more potentially viable worlds.

-Based on the current observations of black holes, approaching one would rend a ship to shreds, demolecularize and “spaghettify” its occupants (although theoretically they might live). I knew they were going to send something into it, and fortunately modern science can only speculate what would be in the heart of the singularity, so they had a lot of creative licensing.

-How did Cooper figure out that tugging on “time strings” would allow him to turn the hands of the watch?

There are few more issues, but they can be delved into once the dust settles.

All in all, a good film, and worth the price of admission. 7.5/10

It’s 2001 with a contiguous plot and a definitive human attachment. I liked it a lot and will buy it and I’m sure I’ll watch it for a long time to come.

I just put all my thoughts into the spoiler format. The plot of this film touches some serious subject matters, curious about opinions.

Spoiler

Both TARS and Cooper team up to show how human and machine can become best buds to push the boundaries of science.

The idea of using gravity to communicate over time and space is a very fun one the Nolan’s executed very well.

I wonder if lost amongst the wonder and spectacle, is that we fucked over the Earth completely. Only by some ridiculous miracle, that outside influence which made the worm hole, did we survive. In the real world, we have no such help that we can determine.
This movie may inspire a generation of astrophysicists, but it may not inspire any people willing to solve the issues of our environment on this planet.

edit:
About the plot.
I really like that the first two planets they visit are decoys. The first by accident and the second by human choice.
The dark spiral Matt Damon’s character takes you is well done. You could see it coming if you wanted. I chose not to hypothesize in the middle of the film.
But even if you did, there is enough of a plot to take you around again and complete the human connection.

Also, Mathew McConaughey seems like a guy I’d like to have dinner with. He supported Jodie Foster in Contact and now starred in Interstellar. Those have to be deliberate choices.

Caligula is considered by some to be a flawed masterpiece.
