Im very new to this but I am currently building a stick for myself and Ive gotten the body together but Im having an issue with the wiring. I bought the IST preinstalled Brook PS3/PS4 PCB kit from focusattack. The ground daisy chain didnt have enough connections on it for all the buttons I have. I have a new daisy chain and cant figure out how to remove the old and insert the new chain into the harness.
The cleanest way is to use a .110" quick disconnect and the appropriate crimp tool (I use a Hozan P-706). The may be a crimpless method, as I remember it mentioned here, but I’m unfamiliar with it. You could go ghetto a solder a wire onto an existing quick disconnect at the end of the chain to join new links (though I don’t advise it). If you do go that route, just make sure to hot glue over it or wrap it well with electrical tape…
I prefer heat shrink over electrical tape and hot glue. More I look at it the more I as I hate hot glue being used in electronics. Hot glue should never be used on a solder joint.
Now for an easy wire splice, crimp in a butt connector.
Hey, Thanks for your quick replies but I think maybe my first post wasnt clear enough. I made the daisy chain already with quick disconnects but Im not sure how to take the old chain out of the harness that plugs into the pcb and insert the new one in. Its a white 5-pin(?) harness that plugs into the board
Agreed. Hot glue is ghetto and I don’t use it for anything but arts and crafts (and reattaching connectors to stock Agetec stick button pins). I assumed that the guy’s skills weren’t honed yet, so I suggested household items to get the job done quickly. That’s why I also suggested electrical tape–heat shrink tubing might be outside the realm of things available in the house.
The only two 5-pin headers on that breakout board are for the joystick and the alt. USB connection.
I’m assuming then that you’re referring to the joystick header. If that’s the case there is only one ground wire that you’d need to just add three more quick disconnects in-chain for the remainder of the directions. Per the product page, there’s already such a harness included with .187" connectors. Here’s a direct quote from the product page:
Oh shoot you are right my mistake. I was referring to the Main Harness. The ground daisy chain it comes with has 10 connections and I needed 11. I made the chain with 11 quick disconnects but am unsure how to replace the old with the new one. I am using a Sanwa JLF Joystick
Why didn’t you just clip the 10th quick disconnect in the existing ground chain and then just crimp on two disconnects to add your 11th ground connection??
I was unsure about if I could do that or not and just decided to make new one with appropriate lengths between disconnects to minimize extra wire in the case. Is it not possible for me to put the new ground chain into the main harness?
Take a picture of the current state of your main harness and post it here. You may be able to salvage the ground lead to the JST pin in the main connector but I don’t know how far up the ground chain you clipped.
