I"m a little bummed that this won’t be at EVO but fuck it, I’m sure there will be a tournament or two somewhere along the line.
Meanwhile, Mr Boon, I’d sure love to see some footage of this game! Golly gee, that’d be swell!

this game is gonna be hype. can’t wait to see what aquaman will play like. i get a sense it’s gonna be pretty amusing along with awesome.
Aquaman Flowchart:
10: Summon fish
20: Get kicked in the dong
30: GoTo 10
Well to be fair the Ocean(Majority of Earth) gives AquaMan equivalent amount of sheer power compared to SuperMan using a Yellow Sun
I’m not being fair, I’m being an asshole. I hope Aquaman grabs Supes and pulls him towards the Earth’s core so he has to fight The Deep Ones because fuck Superman. I hope Earth’s yellow sun feels good on your skin when eldritch abominations are having their way with your mind, Son of Krypton!
SSadistic!
I never understood this complaint with MK9… I mean there are some cases where the animation looks wonky, like Flash’s stupid fucking walk, but nobody seems to complain when similar stuff happens on capcom games. SFIV in particular has a lot of wonky shit.
People have been complaining about Street Fighter 4’s animation since the game was first shown.
Unfortunately though that’s what happens when you go from 2D to 3D, it’s easier and faster to make models but you lose a lot of creative liberty with how they animate in the process.
For example look at Ryu’s transition from Third Strike to Street Fighter 4.
When’s the next video game/Comic book convention thingy happening?
I actually find NRS’s animations more realistic. But unfortunately, realism doesn’t translate well into the fast paced 2D fighting game environment.
SF : Army of animators who’ve been doing it forever and access to some of the best martial arts studios japan has to offer.
MK : Carlos Pesina and local chicago martial arts studios.
MK has never had the resources SF has, nor have their animators been at this anywhere near as long.
They’re definitely more realistic (than SF) in that they try to emulate real human motion, but the motion just isn’t fluid at all and the limbs seem stiff. It’s like watching C-3PO fight.
Street Fighter is different in that both the art style and animations are intended to be cartoonish. I’m not saying one way is better than the other, just that NRS seems to be doing a poor job at realism. I dunno, maybe it’s my PC gamer elitism showing.
I think it’s just that they have to be very deliberate in their movements when they are doing their motion capture work that it ends up looking stiff from the beginning.
I don’t have any videos for reference but in the 3D mortal kombat games when they had video extras, they showed some of the process of how they do motion capture, and it’s pretty much the people who are being “stiff” in what they are doing. It may have something to do with them actually being martial artists, and trying to stick with the proper way to do things. They are also kind of bad actors so they tend to overdo things, like certain idle animations.
I just think it’s a matter of realism not translating well into games that demand such fast movement. I think MK9 looks great in motion most of the time, but there are some parts of the animation that feel a bit stiff. I don’t think it’s anywhere nearly as bad as people make it out to be. And aside from the animation, the game is fucking gorgeous. Best stages and character models second to only DoA5.
If anything, the NRS games veer too closely towards “realistic”, or at least in that direction. The issue with MK9’s animation- and perhaps even moreso IJ’s - is that it isn’t very expressive. If you look at a game like Marvel 3, there’s absolutely nothing “realistic” about how the characters move, but every single attack, and even simple motions like walking or standing idle consist of very expressive, almost extreme poses. Any given frame of animation exudes personality and not only serves to make animations easily distinguishable but also help define the characters themselves. This isn’t unique to MvC of course - it applies just as well to KOF, GG, SF, Skullgirls, you name it - but I like using Marvel as an example since it’s fast paced and has a lot of cancelling one animation with another, and that’s really where the expressive poses become the most important.
Comparing MvC3 and Injustice, Marvel has very expressive poses even for mundane actions, while Injustice is almost the opposite; mundane-looking poses and movements for even the more extreme actions. MK9 is the same to some extent, but IMO gets more of a pass since it has (seemingly) less going on than Injustice, both in terms of pace and in terms of what you expect from comic book superheroes. If you look at games like Virtua Fighter or Tekken, they have more “mundane” looking attacks and moves than most 2D fighters, but it’s far less of an issue (or rather a non-issue) because the look of the animation is well-suited to the tempo of the games, and there’s not nearly as much animation cancelling going on either. It’s the juxtaposition of “realistic” or “mundane” movement and the relative frantic pace that make the NRS games look kind of awkward, I think.
Needless to say there’s a lot more that goes into animation, but I think this point is absolutely the fundamental difference between NRS games and the typical Japanese-developed fighting game. Granted MK9/Injustice does have some animations that are just flat-out ugly, but I think the number one thing that could easily make the game look better (and more familiar to fans of other fighting games) would be to just make all the animations more stylized, extreme and expressive.
I doubt NRS will ever really learn that lesson, though. Oh well.
Finally a thought on the roster: I don’t really have any opinions on the names that have been circulating in the past couple of days. All characters mentioned sound like reasonably additions. But where the hell are the female characters? WW, Catwoman and Harley aren’t going to be it, are they?
^ No one really cares, lol.
The dudes are the sure fire hits, plus everyone knows them.
Even female comic book fans can’t it
Booster Gold needs to be the Akuma of this Game
Personally I feel the MK series is also under appreciated for the music, some of the stuff is fantastic.
I really do think they need to move away from the 3D mechanics they picked up over the ps2 years, having much faster normals would help a bunch with the animations.
That and going back to MK3 or even better MK4 style chain attacks would also help, or just make it so you can’t initiate a full string on whiff.
so. . . make it street fighter?
herp derp animations or not, most mk9 players like the way mk plays. Even the garbage ones like DA and De. We just hate the bugs and glitches and thoughtless gameplay decisions that have kept the series from being competitively functional for the past 15 years.
