japanese arcades have survived largely through dumb luck (e.g. ideal locations), and even that hasn’t been able to keep a large chunk of them from dying out

Have you even been to Japan? Everytime this comes up you say this and I have no idea why you think this. How the hell is an ideal location “dumb luck” ? These places do move around. They didn’t just happen to get a nice space decades ago when the rent was cheap or something, and new ones continue to pop up.

compared to US arcades they are lucky as hell that they have any chance at these spots in the first place

look at an arcade like stargate, which was stuck in an out-of-the way area; the owner mentioned that as one of the main reasons it eventually failed. TGA was out in the middle of nowhere too, etc.

the reason i say that this is luck is that arcades developed a major social stigma in the US that often keeps them from landing good locations, which never happened in japan. this isn’t even just an arcade thing, either, i’ve heard similar stories about LAN centers and such.
