Individualist vs. Collectivist: Differences between Japan and USA

I agree that Asian countries are more collectivist and that America is pretty individualistic…but i fail to see how that translate into fighting games despite all that…lol

 The comment about Daigo FADC’ing combined with this is epic.

God I love '09.

American arcades died because they didn’t adapt their business model with the times. Instead of focusing on having the best hardware which consoles caught up they should have focused on arcades being a place to spend with your friends. Kind of like starbucks but with games.

I thougth japan was one of the best places to live. I mean everyone looks happy there. I never been to japan. but as a black guy I don’t see my self living there but to come see all the hype. but it’s sad to hear that there alot of lonely people there.

most things look better from the outside man, thats not to say there aren’t any happy people in Japan. When I was there I met many great people who had great lives going on(then again they were still in college), but there is a fair amount of those who live pretty sad lives.

From the comments:
“Daigo: Scissors!
Opponent: Rock!
Daigo: FADC PAPER!!!”

I laughed so hard

Also I’m not with the first post on how he describes the western culture.
He makes it sound like our way of life pushes us to be alone and this is simply wrong.
I’m not an expert on japanese culture but I highly doubt they are so much more social.

why is that. I mean from what I see there have it really good there. everything looks really nice. and the women look fine.

who knows man, being an outsider I don’t think I can ever truly understand the social pressures and whatnot of the Japanese society. Sure I have a good idea of how things are, but as an outsider you are often given a different set of expectations (at least in my experience).

My linguistics teacher in Japan teaches in Illinois. He was born and raised in Japan, and wanted to get out ASAP. As he puts it he “hates” Japan for the same reasons I mentioned (social pressures, etc.) the only reason he agreed to be the resident advisor for our trip was so he and his wife could live together for a while(they teach at different schools).

I wish I could give you straight answer, but I don’t have one. Basically Japan is just like any other country(it may seem like a magic wonderland, which it can be sometimes) in that it has its grimy side, but we just don’t see it. For example, when I lived there it was not uncommon for students on JR lines to be late for class because someone jumped in front of the train.

Don’t let me discourage you. Japan is awesome. I find myself wanting to go back, and when I grad from college I am definitely gonna plot my way to get there. I just don’t think people should be misled to think that Japan is like Disneyland where nothing goes wrong and everyone is happy.

Oh and you’re right (other than the lack of T&A:sad:) the women in Japan were gorgeous.

OP is definitely a baka gaijin.

How come I feel like I just read a page out of my AP Psychology Text Book?

Zer, a well written observation, and I think a lot can be learned from it. Us americans are also very clicky and the attitude isn’t the same. I lived with a japanese foreign exhange student for a decade and the viewpoints are very different…

So naturally if people do anything as a group, that means all around better comp on even the players who are good there can end up being our top players. Their top players can literally destroy us completely, because the group work means they can take criticism better and all function as a unit of helping each other improve through failure, while we on the other hand have really aggressive ego’s that we as players will even reply to the original post of this thread in a aggressive fashion, rather then take its meaning seriously. Also because we are singular, a lot of the time other good players love to watch others fail, so instead of us becoming better through humbling ourselves to our losses, we talk a bunch of nonsensical trash, while in japan they are correcting bad habits constantly.

Some of our better players are working on changing these ideas though, Mike ross and Keno for example are very good players and very helpful. For us to be on japanese level we need to all learn to work better together and take criticism from a non historically american perspective IE, defending our ego’s when we clearly played it bad…That will be tough, it’ll be even more tough because we get these games after they do, and immediately upon release they start forming legitimate games.

To become something amazing means that we must first share the things that makes us dominate others, completely to where we can lose vs those people, and take it from there. We need that kind of community.

We are so obsessed about winning, we are missing a lot of detail due to our hording nature that is key to our game plan.

SRK: Making the next Daigo’s, and Max Webers :lame:

I read the thread through and will now be passing my social anthropology exam. Thank you, professors.

haha just kidding. no worries, i think it mainly has something to do with how WBC is so close to spring training that none of the big names want to play for the fear of being injured.

This thread is now about the difference between japanese and american toilets. Love it or hate it?

i personally cannot think about using the traditional japanese toilet where you have to squat. The washlets i am fine with, but squatting seems really weird especially at the train station.

I think fighting game level is mostly about dedication and competition. america has some really dedicated players but they are really far apart so they can’t grow with eachother and bring up lower level players as well as the Japanese can.

traditionally japan is much more dedicated to things than america is as well i think, also the harsher school system probably gives alot of players the ability to go for a long time doing boring things and keep focus allowing them to practice hard combos, and counter things better than we can…

also from an evolutionary standpoint they had to be on guard from ninjas, like even while they sleep, otherwise they would be killed and removed from the genepool. this is why diago can psychic DP. Do you know how much awareness you need to avoid being killed by ninjas?

also the ninja familys have also become fighting game players they have become exeptionally skilled at finding openings and dealing lethal damage.

so to conclude the difference between american and japanese players is ninjas.

The only reason these 09 members are putting the “ive been lurking” is it seems to be a way to validate whatever retarded fucking book reports ppl come up with.

Japanese style suck, had to use one right after I landed in Japan for the first time:lame:. I don’t understand why they have them at all anymore. Washlets are cool, my friend misses them dearly. I also liked the heated seats especially during the winter, though sometimes it was creepy cuz I couldn’t help but think that the toilet was warm cuz someone else was just on it.

I been here since 05 and today I just post one.

Well i’ve been lurking since 2001. See what i did there?
