Word on the street is that you now rule Latveria. 1hit kill status.
We need to get some games in. BlazBlue is stupid fun, and more people need to play it. I’ve got a ton of questions to ask you, because some stuff still isn’t making any sense.
Say for instance, Ragna Challenge Mode #5
Throw, 5C 5D (1HIT) 214+D 5C sj C dj C 214+C 5D 214+A 214+D
I can nail it most of the time, but sometimes they bounce out after the air 214+C… Is it because they hit the ground before the air 214+C? One ground bounce per combo, or?..Why don’t I just go read up on the engine…haha
@Ryan and Brian: See you gents tomorrow. Iz Mahvel Baybee!!!
In that challenge combo the trick seems to be catching them as soon as possible off the wallbounds with 5C. I tried alternating the timing on various other moves but that was the thing that seemed to consistently determine success or failure.
Ragna’s j.214C will drop for several reasons. It is a multi-hit move, but only the final hit will actually cause them to bounce. If you start hitting them too low in the air, Ragna will land before the final hit connects and they will just drop out because the individual hits barely have any hitstun at all unless you land the final hit. Alternately, you might start hitting too low on the other character’s hitbox (around their feet or something) and the final hit will whiff because Ragna moves too far below them.
As far as I know there aren’t any stipulations like “only one ground bounce per combo” or anything like that in blazblue. It’s all determined by hitstun deterioration, which varies from one attack to another. Generally speaking, you want to use fewer hits per combo and you want those hits to be mostly strong attacks, like B or C normals. Combos that start with throws or jabs will have significant damage and hitstun penalties applied from the very beginning. Also, some moves may have severe penalties if you use them more than once in the same combo, like lambda’s 6C.
Yeah…wow… lvl 0-5 attacks? Formulas for determining damage and hitstun deterioration? It’s all Klingon to me.
I read Rachels changes, and most of them made no sense. All I know is she’s “better.” I’d like to understand how.
Lol…it’s MvC3 all over again. Is there a site out there besides Dustloop that has good BlazBlue info? All the numbers/pie charts and power point presentations assume that the reader is already very familiar with GG/BB styled games.
There used to be a few other places but now dustloop is pretty much the place to go as far as I can tell
You don’t really have to know all the specifics of how the engine works to play the game. You just kind of have to get a feel for which combos will work off of which attacks, and when you need to shorten your combo off of a throw/2A/etc.
I generally just start by learning one BnB combo, then experimenting to see if that combo works off of all my combo starting attacks (any ground normal, a throw, etc). if it doesn’t work, I try to find a variation that does work, until I know at least one combo that I can do from each combo starting situation.
I also try to think of my combos as being made up of pieces. For example, a ground combo into a launcher might be one piece, and the air combo that follows it might be a different piece. A character might be able to combo into that same ground string off of a throw, but the full air combo might not connect, so you would have to use a different/shorter air combo, which would be a third combo “piece.” From there, you can start to look for similarities between combo pieces and where one piece can potentially flow into another and build from there, if that makes any sense at all. This was the method I used to figure out Doctor Doom combos, and my tutorial thing was structured in a way that somewhat reflects this.
I dunno, sometimes it’s hard for me to explain stuff. Guilty Gear was the first game I ever learned and it incorporates things from pretty much every fighting game ever, so learning other games rarely feels like completely foreign territory
I understand what you mean. I generally create the most damaging B&B combo I can find, think up setups for it, and go from there. I want max damage off any hit, anywhere on screen. Ragna’s 214+C does have next to no hitstun until the final hit. I loled. I just high jumped and added more hits so it would fully connect.
You’re right. I don’t need to understand the engine in depth, but I do want to know why something just stops working (they recover, or something whiffs)
There are same move penalties, just like Marvel 3. They way the game prevents infinites and loops would be of great interest to me.
Fighting game engines usually rely on same move penalty and game specific mechanics to prevent loops and infinites. Usually it’s hitstun decay, like if you use a standing heavy early in the combo it’ll cause X frames of hitstun for you to follow up in, but if you use it late it will cause fewer frames allowing for fewer followup options. The decay usually has a minimum amount of hitstun frames to prevent people from getting hit, recovering immediately and throwing or, depending on the move’s animations and whatnot, crashing the game. Games like GG, BB, and MK also have gravity in them, so the more hits in the combo the heavier the opponent gets.
Of course I went to UFGT7 ! And I choked hardcore in that 2nd match against PL. I was all over the stream during the raffle…you guys are ASS for not going to UFGT7. It was the best tournament that I have ever been to !
I also made to semi finals in my mystery pool…I battled my way though a handful of games including Tournament of Legends on Wii, where I was put into losers by Phreak from PhreakMods.com…Then I went up against some random in Battle Arena Toshinden, I just picked Eiji and Kayin AKA Ryu and Ken and pulled through !
After that I went up against Ramboner in Guilty Gear X on Dreamcast SolBadGuy Mirror Match…FREE.
From there I had to take on Wolfkrone in VF5 on stream…my Jackie Vs. Wolf’s Vanessa. It was a bad match…I don’t remember much about VF5 other than mashing w/ Jackie. I somehow managed to win and from there I got bodied free in the Semi Finals by PR ROG in MK3…his NightWolf was too much for my scrubby Kabal / Liu Kang.
As for Marvel and Super I had some killers in my pool !
In Super my first match was against JuiceBox…You have to guess against him, and I guessed wrong. My 2nd was against Master Splinter a ROG player and I hate that match up against my Fei…FREE.
Finally in Marvel I had to go up against Perfect Legend, where I could have taken in to a third match but Akuma lvl 3 XFactor fucked me up ! My final tournament match was against J-Money who is “The best shittest player, I have ever seen”. I upheld the tradition of not making it past first round in both my pools…but I did make some noise in the mystery pool and the raffle.
It was a great weekend…you guys should have came. But your broke and lazy LOL. I still love you guys

So I am relatively new to SRK, but am experienced with hosting various tournaments and was wanting to gauge the tourney attendance for an event in Indiana before I set it up. Anyone interested?
So far it looks like I will be able to go to Arsenal meet up tomorrow. Does anyone plan on bringing Melty Blood Actress Again? I loved what I played of Act Cadenza.
Also I’m a bit handicapped, on the walking department. So if I do bring my tv, and system would anyone be willing to help me set it up when I get there?
Looking forward to playing some BurayBuru with you guys tomorrow. I’ll play some Marvel too but get ready to take the matches off my hands for free lol.
Our reserved room at Arsenal is in the basement, with no real handicap accessibility options. If you want I can give you my number and you can call when you get there so we can get some guys upstairs to try and help you get down, unless there’s a more reasonable solution. Just wanted to make sure that you were aware of that before you got there.
As usual I’ll be there around 5, wishing desperately that anyone played HDR or ST. I’ll settle for some MK9, though.
I have been bringing a ps2 setup for Guilty Gear, and I also have an MBAA disc I can bring.
I probably won’t be bringing my Xbox so if people want more marvel setups bring them yourselves. I’ll try to bring the xbox TEs, I just don’t want to drag 3 setups and 6 arcade sticks all by myself
I’ve been practicing a bit with the CS2 changes so hopefully I won’t be completely worthless in BB. Unless I try to play Platinum, I still don’t know shit about using her
Stairs eh? Sounds fun lol Yeah I’d appreciate the help, if you could tell me your number I’d appreciate it, like I said in the previous post I have a ton of fighters for my ps3. Hopefully I can get some good games in tomorrow. :3 I’ll be a complete scrub at MB:AA since I’ve never played it, but I’d still like to try.
Games I’ll have once again: BBCS, MVC3, MVC2, SF2HDRemix, SF2, SF3, SSF4, AH3, Tekken 5, Tekken 6, and Mortal Kombat. I might have forgotten something lol
Were you planning to host one in Terre Haute or Indianapolis? You might get a bigger turnout here. If you hype it up well on the forums you might get between 50-70 people.
LoZ! I will be sure to make it to your tournament! Make Composer be there too. And host BlazBlue if you can, but I’ll definitely play Marvel if you don’t.
