Indianapolis, IN: We do play games, I promise

I’ll be playing Battlefield 3 beta / GoW 3 with some friends online, tomorrow, but I will admit that playing XM vs. SF does sound really fucking tempting to me…

Ryu + Rogue = me as a youngster wailing on college kids when they had that game at the now-defunct Castleton Square Mall arcade.

I’m definitly down for some GG since I can’t play it on the computer since I can’t get my computer to recognize my arcade stick. How balanced is GG? Most of the characters I thought looked cool were low and bottom tier :(. As long as they’re playable I don’t really mind.

Also, I could be easily persuaded into playing some SSBM or Brawl-. I’m mediocre at Smash at best, but enjoy a good Falcon Punch every once in awhile (especially the Brawl- version :wow:). It’s not a fighting game, but if people really wanted to play some older, random games, I could bring my copy of Mario Tennis (GameCube version).

No, we heard you. We just don’t respect you.

That’s the beauty of GG, everyone is playable. There are still tiers, but a Bridget can still beat an Eddie or Testament if they’re good. The game is pretty well balanced.

@KnyghtFall I’mma have to dust off my copy of DS3 before I can play VS. Guilty Gear tomorrow?

From what I understand, bottom tier isn’t as much of a death sentence in GG as it is in other games. There’s enough universal tools for the whole cast to take advantage of, and very few matchups are worse than 6-4. If a character fits your playstyle well, you’re better off going with him/her than trying to play a top tier.

I’d like to come tomorrow, since ST is pretty much the best. As usual, I likely won’t be able to go.

From what I understand of GG, everyone is broke so its relatively fair and balanced. Kyle would know more about this but from what hes told me the tier list isn’t terribly important and pretty much every character has a legit shot at winning.

I’m pretty hype about doing classic gaming. I could bring some CVS2 for some K-groove action. Ratio 2 Sagat, Ryu, Dictator is alot of fun even though I don’t really understand that game all that well.

That sounds cute, but all I’m hearing is the hate mail I get online in msgs…Dignity, dignity, dignity, dignity, dignity, dignity…lol #Online gamer on my balls…<3

Unless you are Ino, Johnny, or Anji the GG tier list isn’t important. You might have some bad matchups here and there but it’s all winnable. The only really bad matchups are Potemkin vs Chipp and Eddie vs Potemkin, and even those are just 7-3. Supposedly Zappa owns Johnny for free too but that matchup occurs so infrequently that there’s not much data to judge it with.

Even if you do play bottom 3 you’re still in a better position than most bottom tier characters in other games. When you’re trying to get into Guilty Gear, ease of use would be a much more significant factor than your character’s placement on the tier list.

I can’t speak on the Johnny v Zappa matchup, I haven’t played a real Johnny. Zappa has a lot of fun with Potemkin though.

Kyle speaks truth. If you’re just starting GG, I’d pick a character with fairly simple combos until you get used to the overall game. It’s pretty different. Your best bets are probably:

Faust
Ky
Potemkin (he’s your grappler)
Jam
Sol
Axl (think Dhalsim with counters and fun as shit combos)

Feel free to prove me wrong. I can tell you without a doubt that I-No requires GODLIKE execution to be good with, which is a shame because I really wanted to play her. Eddie is pretty difficult too.

What are the bnb combos for Ky? I know I could check dustloop but my main problem with those threads is that they list every single combo that you could possibly do and I have trouble deciphering which ones are useful / I should start with. I’ve got a basic idea of Ky mixup but I just don’t know how to convert with him.

Yeah, DL can be kinda thick if you don’t know what exactly you’re looking for. How simple are you looking? 5k 5s 5h 236h is pretty bare bones. If that’s too easy, try 214k c.s 2h jc j.s jc j.s j.h 623h (h)

c.s is close slash and the jump cancels are toward your opponent, not straight up. The uppercut at the end has a followup where you mash H for one more hit.

do you have to super jump cancel or just normal jump cancel?

Normal jc. If you want to be fancy, you can do 5D homing jump j.s j.s j.s j.k j.s jc j.s j.h 623h (h)

Cool…I’m gonna practice that when I get home.

I haven’t given up on Dizzy but like I did with 3s, I’m gonna stick with someone basic to understand the game before I move onto someone more advanced. I just get jealous when I see Dizzy played well because it just looks like a lot of fun.

@Indy - best thing to do is just watch vids on youtube, know what the normals are, and try following the normals into specials and such. It may sound painful, but Goldenrody has uploaded a handful of vids every week for the last two months or so, and in the vid info it shows the player/char, and if they won or lost. It is a quick way to skim thru to find a good Ky player

buppa/machaboo is probably the best Ky player. Ky’s combos are usually just chaining ground normals into sweep for a knockdown or into his slide. To combo into slide you want to push the opponent as far away as possible, if you are too close they will recover before the second hit and you can be punished. Similarly, using slide safely in a blockstring requires you to get pushed away from the opponent in order to make it safe. his ground overhead is also safer when performed from farther away, but then it becomes much harder to combo after it, so the move is generally not used much.

Unless you get an anti-air, throw, or some sort of counterhit you are most likely going to just be comboing ground normals into knockdown for mixup as he has no good launcher or other move that allows him to get the opponent airborne. One exception to this is his ground lightning orb force break which you can combo into off of sweep, it will hold them in the air for a moment and give you time to juggle into an air combo. However, you have to be pretty close for it to work so it’s usually not worth doing unless you hit them point blank with a meaty 5H or something

YES! I hate having to go to the air, its the most intimidating part of these kind of games for me so knowing that Ky is mostly based around a ground offensive is music to my ears. This is so delicious.

But air combos are SEXY in this game.

I just went into training and played around with some basic Ky combos. They may not be the best but if I suddenly decided to start playing Ky these would probably be my bnbs. Obviously you can substitute 5K for 2K or just leave them out completely. Experiment with different ground combos and get comfortable with what works based on how far away you are from the opponent when the first move hits, these are just some of the ones I found to be the most stable and reliable.

2K cl.5S 2S 5H 236K

2k cl.5S f.5S 2S 236k

2k cl.5S 5H 2D

214K cl.5S 2H j.S jc j.S j.H 623HH (you might need to dash briefly before the cl.5S. Alternatively you can dash up and catch them with 2P cl.5S, this allows you to pick up the combo even if they have fallen too low for cl.5S)

any ground string into 2D 236K (RC after first hit, short dash if necessary) cl.5S 2H j.S jc j.S j.H 623HH (again, the dashup 2P cl.5S works here as well)

I actually did not know about the catching with 2P thing until today, i just randomly tried it out. I guess you learn something new every day.

edit: it’s combo video music like this that truly inspires me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_5K4ekisho

This is also exactly the kinds of horrible things MacArthur Blunts does to me every time I play him  The parts in black and white are taken from actual matches

UUGGHH…playing a new fighter (GG) is like swirling round and round trying to shoot clay pidgeons in the dark. Marvel 3 took forever to get used to playing (stupid launch button…)

I’ll try it though. I used to play Venom before I quit GG altogether. A basic “oh! what does this button do!” Venom.

Brawl Minus is fun man. Everyone is stupid broke (Samus plus homing missles=good times) They took everyones best attributes and just increased them to ridiculous levels. Links fire ice and light arrows are very good. Link is just a beast now period.

Pika is probably the strongest now. Lightning spikes. Ball lighting spikes at an angle (Fox’s old reflector spike)…meh you’ll see.

Oh…and Dat SkullGirlz!!

Good, so when you lose to me then you can get salty and not respect.
