In this thread about beer, our topic of discussion is the topic of discussing beer

I didn’t really see a thread for this, and I thought it might be a helpful thing to have. Really anything, but reviews of beers and such might be nice.

Right now, I’m drinking: “Orabelle” by Great Divide (CO). Tripel-style American ale, 8.20%, unknown pluto and IBUs.

I Say: Like almost everything else by Great Divide, it’s really great, but like almost everything else by Great Divide, it’s hard to drink at the end of the night. Shrugging off the company’s previous pattern of super-specific labels in favor of the very basic “Belgian-style ale,” Orabelle is, in reality, made in the style of a “tripel,” judging by the flavor. As rich as someone familiar with Great Divide might expect, it can feel a little more syrupy than “nuanced” after a night out at the bars. Then again, this is the sort of thing you should expect from a tripel, so for what it is, it’s actually not as overwhelming as it could be. It’s very spice-forward, with clove and coriander more noticeable than fruits or sugars, and only gets really sweet, pear and caramel, in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is still syrupy, though, and feels particularly thick if your mouth is dry at the start. Overall, it’s a beer I like a lot, and I’d gladly recommend it, but it’s a beer to start a night with, not a beer to end a night with. Definitely pour it in a glass to bring out the carbonation and mitigate the syrupy qualities.

The Bottle Says to Pair it with: It pairs well with prosciutto or salami, roasted Brussels sprouts, Flemish beef stew, Gorgonzola cheese, and pecan pie.

I say: I think it goes nice with a salty pesto, so I can see prosciutto/salami/gorgonzola, and I could see a lemon/garlic roast or some savory hazlenut shenanigans working out great with the Brussels sprouts. I would not ever recommend this beer with a dessert as sweet as pecan pie, though, even as someone who really likes both. I’d think something tart and rich like cheesecake or certain cobblers. If I get an off-the-wall-specific suggestion like “Flemish beef stew,” I’d say a Nectarine Brown-butter Buckle, a fantastic butter cake topped with fruit, is the perfect desert, but old-fashioned/biscuit style shortbreads could have good results, too.

XXXX or fuck off, cunt

I’m partial to ales, especially british/irish style. Absolute favorite out there is Newcastle, and right behind that, Smithwick’s.

Other ones that caught my eye (not excluding any style) include Kirin Ichiban and Red Stripe. I’ve not had much luck with American beers outside of Schlafly.

i liked smithwick’s until i noticed that it’s only 3.8%…almost demanded a refund!

but if i’m drinking for taste, i mainly stick to weissbeirs and lighter ales. korea is starting to get a lot more european beers these days, which is good. been drinking a lot of oettinger hefeweizen.

Yeah, last time I went out to a self-serve bar in Seoul, I saw quite a few from Europe. Still didn’t have Newcastle, in which case I would’ve been stoked.

But finally having things other than Max, Cass and Hite (Americans, think Budweiser, only worse) is an improvement.

That’s the Abita double IPA, right? I had it two weeks ago and it was fucking amazing. But at more than 9% ABV it hit me like a ton of bricks when I had seconds.

was it in seoul? most of the bars around HBC/itae have newcatle.

Aged thread The Beer Thread

please for the love of all that is good do not quote Havatcu

Are you sure? I’m fairly certain it’s 4.5 percent. Still low, but less in “refund” territory.

I have a six pack of the Lagunitas’s Daytime IPA (4.65%, 54.2 IBU) for the afternoon. I’m not really sure how the Beer Store guy sold me on “It’s like an IPA, but weaker,” but I guess it’s nice that I can pound like six IPAs and be fine. It definitely doesn’t lose as much flavor as I’d expect, which is good to know about “session” IPAs in general, but I’ve never been nuts about Lagunitas’s IPA and this is more of the same. Decent beer, but not really worth that Lagunitas price, especially if the 4.65% ABV is a concern. If you are rich as hell, I guess Daytime would let you crush IPAs like you would normally crush Coors or whatever, and I’d guess I’d rather drink IPAs. So there’s that. I wouldn’t really recommend it, otherwise.

Drink it with: It’s more on the “citrus-y” than “bitter” side of IPAs, so anything spicy will work. Tex-Mex spicy might go with this one a little better than, say, cajun spicy or curry spicy, but it’s not gonna go badly with any of them. If it had a little more bite, I’d say it was the perfect companion to Buffalo wings.

Yeah, but I haven’t done any drinking in Itaewon. I went to one at Cheonggu station, and they did have Kirin and Smithwick’s, which was enough for me, but I felt disappointed that I found now Newcastle.

I may have t head to Itaewon one night just to get that craving out of my system.

Whenever someone tells you it’s an IPA but weaker, don’t get it. Just go get a saison. Saisons were invented by farmers to be a weak beers they can drink for breakfast before they go till the land or whatever the fuck. They have between a 3-5% ABV and are much lighter and more refreshing. There are many that are delicious so I suggest looking into them.

If we’re going with Lagunitas, I’m fond of their Censored IPA and their Little Sumptin’ Sumptin’ Ale. They’ve never steered me wrong.

I hear that, but every saison I’ve tried is on the stronger side (Hennepin at 7.7%, Colette at 7.3%), not that I really mind that, of course. They are pretty much the best refreshing summer beers, though, still.

I like Little Sumptin’ Sumptin’, definitely.

Surely and Fulton.

Unfortunately I just relocated from MN to TX so all of my favorite locally brewed options are gone. =`(

Does Texas have any local beers around? I know if you moved into a city (Austin, Dallas, etc.) you will have your share of brew pubs.

In college, drink terrible beer, my favorite is Golden Crown.

Hell, I’m about 30 and I still drink terrible beers. Just two days ago me and a couple of friends finished off a six-pack of Rolling Rock tallboys. High-brow beers are great, but they are expensive. It gets worse when all your friends make less than minimum wage or are perpetually poor. One person can’t cover the cost of all those alcoholics without going broke himself. The only answer is a 12 or 18 pack of beer to satisfy the poor masses.

I need better paid friends.

Anything.

Drink it with: Pizza.

Anything?

No-matter what Vynce says, don’t drink dandruff shampoo with pizza, you guys.

I got quite into Beamish when I was in Ireland. It’s a stout like Guinness but generally cheaper in the pubs and if you drink 8 of them you won’t be getting cold sweats and shitting tar the next day.

I’ve had a few 4-packs of Guinness on St. Paddy’s and I woke up great. Get a stronger stomach, sir.

(I was also fueled by cocaine so who knows what’s to blame.)
