Improvements for next EVO

and that’s why we have choice.

**AND YOU’RE IN VEGAS. **

smh.

The seating problem was only for those that went alone on finals day, it’s better to go with somebody you know so they can save your seat when you come back.

Complaints about food are obsurd… It’s a convention for video games, they’re not there to provide food… And it’s been drilled several times, your in Vegas for crying out loud. Everything is overpriced, especially in higher class hotels. I really don’t get what you expect them to do.

Thread is asking what could be improved… hence the obvious.

Your want for crappy overpriced food leaves me puzzled?

.then pay for awesome overpriced food then. If you’re just a cheap-ass/penny pincher, then Las Vegas isn’t for you. My sincerest remedy for you is buy a couple boxes of $1 crackers and some peanut butter and jelly and live off of that. You have 1 fucking year to save up at least $1,000 to have a half-decent/great time there; there aren’t that many excuses, since finding a job (or two) would supplement your vacation there. Divided between 50 weeks, and that’s $20/week tucked away.

coldviper’s post right above you just reiterated what I and others have said.

IT’S VEGAS. PAY UP.

Evo could use more volunteers. Maybe the call for volunteers could expand past judges, and we could work on making a system like the CA system used at GDC (obviously on a much smaller scale). The TOs could use help setting things up, the judges could use a float judge who oversaw 6-or-so pools, and we could certainly use someone to check badges (which I believe should be mandatory for the whole weekend).

I know there are other devoted people out there who would be willing to put some sweat into making Evo better.

I did bro! Your lack of understanding the thread is hilarious BTW.

Stay classy!

the Mc’Donald’s dollar menu was not a 2 dollar menu just because its Las Vegas. I mean, sacrificing quality and quantity for convenience is always a lose/lose, at least in my book. Here is the smart option if you don’t want to pay for non-luxury hotel food:

Pack your own lunches in a cooler.

Everything I’d suggest has already been suggested. Taping off the aisles so that people have a visual cue for where they shouldn’t be standing/sitting during matches would probably be very helpful, as would volunteers or judges acting like ushers during the finals to prevent the event from having to be shut down finals. Megaphones wouldn’t actually help for the judges; it’ll only add to the din to have a roomful of people shouting into megaphones. If you’re a judge, you might consider bringing a whiteboard or chalkboard to hold up or something. In my experience, if the people around you know the name that’s being called, they’ll generally help track the person down. Most of the people there want things to run as smoothly as possible so that they get their chance to play.

The space issue might also solve that to a degree, if that’s even something that can be solved, itself (I am honestly not certain how realistic it is to just expect that a new, larger venue can just be found, unless the date of the event is shifted). If the BYOC area and the gaming pools are separated into two different rooms, so that the pools could be less crowded together, then judges should have an easier time being heard by their players. That’s assuming the players actually show up to their assigned pools, of course, but everything works well in theory.

I’d also honestly charge more for spectator badges, in order to off-set the cost of the event and the cleaning bill, and require a badge to get into the event for the whole weekend, rather than just for the finals. If people cannot afford to pay out of pocket for a badge, then they can volunteer to help out for a shift or two (be it judging, set-up, break-down, whathaveyou) to get one that way. That seems fair to me, and might distribute some of the work a bit more.

That all said, I was absolutely thrilled with EVO this year, and the direction it seems to be heading in (I’d love to see more discussion panels offered, though that has to be a headache to schedule along with the tournament pools). This year was my brother’s first year attending, and it got him to actually care about fighting games (we had to manipulate him into going a bit, since he wasn’t sure he was interested at all). Now he’s hoping to actually play next year, and has already gone out to buy games he wasn’t interested in until he saw them played. It’s a heartwarming thing to see.

Also, one last thing for the people worried about seat vultures; you don’t have to bring someone with you. Ask the people already sitting around you to hold your seat while you go take a leak or grab some food, and be prepared to do the same for them. It’s seriously not that hard to make a friend. Just be sure to actually come back, so that the person holding the seat for you doesn’t look like a total dick for several hours to everyone who didn’t get there early enough to get one.

Food sucks in caesars, and the retarded security guards “cops” whateever they were that kicked people out of the hallways playing casuals was wack. More shirts too!

wow you are a gawdamn idiot.

Actually Vegas is very affordable, it’s only expensive on parts of the strip. I’m a local and even I get pissed when I enter the strip and get hit with the prices. Caesars just happened to be an area i didn’t have mapped out so I missed the Chipotle.

The cabinets were probably made within the last few years (vewlix clones). They did the two last chance quals and the ToL upto the top 8 with “lagless” LCD HDTVs. Arcade superguns/cabinets are really nothing but wires.
Adjustments had to be made so they could stream this arcade game on the main stage, thus the real lagless CRT TVs, and adjustments in wiring to commindate for the main stage stream. But you knew all that didn’t you?

One thing that the stream missed was name labels when they showed the players IRL. My friend who isnt really into fgc didnt know who was who 99% of the matches.(the 1% was daigo ofc)
And he enjoyed the stream alot because he could see the players reactions between rounds/end of matches etc.

Same suggestions as I’ve made in the last few years:
[]Stay in a venue with enough space to support thousands of gamers.
[
]Expand the event to 4 days. It’s absurd to me that the biggest event of the year is essentially shorter than most other major events (see my final suggestion)
[]Include additional official tournaments for other games that people play. Judging by side game tournament turnout and general interest in person, it’s obvious people care and do want those games to happen. Use the 4th day for that or split up events into 2 days per set of games, whatever works. Time to reward the people that care about more than just the current money making stuff.
[
]Allow BYOC on Sunday. This is supposed to be a live tournament, not just a live stream viewing. People paid for 3 days, not 2.
Evo got a few things better this year, screwed up on other things, but I’d like to keep this mainly constructive. People complaining about food costs need to check themselves. It’s like this for every event I’ve ever heard of in an urban setting. It’s not the event organizer’s job to make sure cheap food exists. Next time plan better if your money is short.

Thank you Evo for allowing the ST event to happen on site. I hope we get to do it again next year.

IMO pools need to be laid out better. Putting them into more/different rooms is a good step. Certain areas got way to crowded. Either more floor space needs to be rented out or a new venue location found. (This would also help the issue of to many people without badges getting in)

Pool stations need to be taped/blocked off so people can’t bump into the chair or monitors during games. A bro of mine actually had someone banging on the back of his chair trying to throw his game off. The guy would always try and play it off to being crowded, but only did it during matches with his friends.

The multiple streams were a fantastic idea. I was able to listen to a couple panels while watching some great pool matches and they were a really awesome addition.

Speaking of panels, I would love to see these expanded. Possibly devote and entire day to them if things permit.

Please work on the scheduling for finals day. Things ran way overtime and it didn’t help their were extended breaks for what amounted to adds for Sony smash and Injustice. IMO these should have been panels. Also, the top 8 needs to be lined up and ready to go. Multiple setups to reduce the time eaten by button checks.

While KOF was hype, it ran 2-3 hours overtime. Something needs to be done to address this. AE started way late and it was obvious people were tired and weren’t giving it their all due to the delays. It’s great to have a ton of games in, but this year their almost seemed to be to many.

IMO food isn’t really that big of an issue. People it’s Vegas. Everything is going to be overpriced. When you go to a tournament/convention of this size ALWAYS make sure you have a backpack filled with water and dry foodstuffs to make it through the day/weekend. The backpack can also be used to carry the trash until you can dispose of it. (So we can hopefully avoid the carpet cleaning that they had to do after this year.)

I would love to see the BYOC/casuals area expanded. While it was great to see a bunch of different games, the core tournament games didn’t really seem to have many places to get in casual games during the weekend. I know that the staff probably needed all their setups for the tournament, but I would love to see a bunch of setups set aside JUST for casuals in the future.

You should report that stuff to your judge: that guy should have been told to move, and if he said no it should have escalated to a TO who would probably would have kicked him out of the hall.

My pools ran like clockw0rk: easiest pools I’ve ever run. More space would be nice, though.

Yo did you have to pay for water in the hotel rooms because some kind of emergency shower station could be used.

Yeah next time I might avoid going so early, by the time AE came around I was burnt out man. I just really wanted a good seat but I knew that by time the KOF rolled around the place would be packed.

Just so everyone knows… The food in the BALLROOM WAS CHOSEN AND SETUP BY CAESARS PALACE. This means they set this up on their own decision and set their own prices. So that 8 dollar EVO food is really Ceasars Palace in-house catering. Before anyone bitches about the prices, Caesars Palace is on the strip, a nice venue, so of course they are going to charge for a premium. When conventions run in vegas, 8 dollars to 13 dollars for food is the standard norm. If you don’t like it, there is always Imperial Palace, Wal-Greens, and Casino Royale across the street.
