"I'm not Gouken..." Oni General Discussion Thread

I’d use s.hp anytime over b.mp, it’s so damn easy to shut those divekicks down with it

B+MP is faster startup and the hitbox lingers more, it’s definitely the easiest/best anti-air against dive kicks. Standing HP is better against almost every normal jump in though, yeah.

Oh, I might give it a try, I’ve just fell in love with s.hp :stuck_out_tongue:

maybe it’s just me… but i find it easiest to anti air them with c.hp, but s.mk also works wonders vs dive kicks when c.hp doesn’t (the shallow ones just out of range)

cr.hp trades more than st.hp, I rarely if ever seem to trade when I use st.hp.
U2 is great, I prefer it over U1!

ONI IS AWESOME WOOHOO

I saw a video the other day of someone using Oni U2 as a anti air, yes it hit and yes he got full animation

The other day I had a mashing Zangief do ultra 1 in between hits of my EX tatsu. It was like “j.hk -> TC2 -> EX tatsu (1 hit) FOR MOTHER RUSSIA (2 more hits)”. I was too busy laughing to hit ultra 1 in the corner.

my god, I want to main Oni so much but I can’t see a legit reason to other than he looks and sounds bad ass, does he have anything in particular that makes him stand out against other characters? who are his bad match ups?

highly damaging combos don’t mean much when he’s so dependant on meter and doesn’t have a legit way to stay on the opponent like akuma, surprisingly his normals trade a lot more than I thought, most characters have more than 1 AA so that shouldn’t even be there, yh its a fact his U2 animation is the best looking in the game lool so really the only thing that stands out gameplay wise in your list is his stun which is just so disappointing

Has any1 else felt a negative edge problem with Oni ?

I don’t think Oni is really that dependent on meter at all… he doesn’t actually need meter for any of his combos, it just enhances them. He still does good damage without it though, especially if you consider followups after ending combos in ground pounds.

I do notice a negative edging issue with comboing slashes sometimes, yeah. I get the same thing with Seth on occasion-- I think it’s just something that you don’t notice with other characters because most characters don’t have a similar motion that is differentiated only by punch or kick like Seth and Oni do.

if his moveset doesn’t interest you and you feel like he doesn’t do much damage or stun with ur playstyle, then he is not for you. play with someone you like.

anyone with high mobility and good upclose mixup game is a problem. They force you to change you combos and strategies to keep them close.

He has no real bad matchups(as of now) because he has enough tools to deal with everyone,

As an ex-gouken user, i’ll say that having an SRK is enough to deal with everyone in the game.

Im a bison player & I like oni he got a normal that reminds me of Geese. XD

Super yes.

Just hit 5k bp on XBL, yay

everything about oni interests me and I like the character but is there even a playstyle for this guy ?, my playstyle is to get in and rush shit down lool there are times where I feel Oni can achieve this but generally he seems so weak in offensive pressure, tbh gouken had much better defence than
oni IMO, block, parry, ex tatsu, ex demon flip and the fact he doesn’t play like your general shoto sets up the mind game of not being able to defend himself leading to almost guaranteed “get off me” damage where as Oni has the most obvious wake up defence since its his only option apart from block and he can’t fadc it unless on hit lool

this is what I’m talking about lool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTy2QQw-Wbc and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EE7Lk66FFs&feature=related

and yh I think its clear who his bad matches will be now but to name a few : gouki, ibuki, yun, yang, the somehow improved dhalsim, sagat and makoto

Blocking is the best wakeup defense. For any Character.
and ex tatsu and parry are so very unsafe to do. So very unsafe. I’ve faced enough goukens who tried that just to have me do nothing and whiff and eat a big punish.

Yeah I pretty much lose consistently trying to do “something” on wakeup. I’ve been experimenting with different things but nothing really seems to work besides block, though after I played claw in vanilla I’m plenty used to that feeling  I struggle really badly trying to get auto correct DP to come out, for some reason I can only do it consistently with EX DP. I don’t know if there is a reason for that or if it’s just me. The only thing I really don’t like about oni is his focus attack and backdash seem really poor and I’m still not used to it (as in I do it constantly and get killed for it)

you say that now but when your against a character that has a type of command grab or really hard to see mix ups you will see how bad trying to blocking can actually be, also the majority of good gouken players won’t use those moves in obvious ways and if they are read by the opponent they would adapt to that and try a different method next time like any other good player, I generally find gouken easy to fight but that’s just because I know his wake up options and I know I’m not actually playing experienced gouken players.

Actually blocking has yet to fail me.
Even against Grapplers if I let them close enough to grab me I deserve to be grabbed.
