"I'm not Gouken..." Oni General Discussion Thread

C’mon, naysayers–Oni’s a blast!

His throw may throw them across the screen, but that’s cool, because HP ELECTROBALL. If they jump, fire off one of his amazing normals or command normals. Has everyone started abusing s.HP and f.MK yet? Please do so immediately! I’m a shit player, but in the hands of guys who calculate frame data mid-match these are GDLK moves.

No FADC on blocked SRK. No invincibility on 98% of the frames for stomp and slash. Big deal.

FADCs are a sign of insincerity, a fear to commit oneself entirely. I played a Ken tonight who LOVED to FADC everything. Even his pokes. I sat right on his face. Game over.

Invincibility is a crutch for weakness. I played a Gief who threw out INV grabs and lariats all day. Shaved that sumbitch’s beard, and made him like it. Too late.

Of course, I was playing as Chun, but I’m sure that some of you can enjoy similar results as Oni.

he has a really dope vortex, you just have to be creative. I think comboing into chop then going from there is the main goal, though its hard to get in and land a combo he has a lot of mid range tools to use too.

I’ve found actually that Oni’s f.MK can be just as annoying as Kens. Really good for tick throw set ups and on counter hit you can get some beefy combos

I’ve been meaning to test this more, I almost never use it and I guessed it might be good for what you’re talking about. I’ll have to get on that.

CRUMPLE STUN INTO LOW FORWARD RESET INTO EX SLASH >:O

I wonder what his hitbox is when doing f.FP…might be PRIME kara bait. At work though so I can’t toy around with that. shrug

  • :bluu:

I’m not sure that will work very well though, f.FP is pretty slow startup compared to fireballs and it doesn’t clash until the end, so I’ve only found it to be useful for clashing with them at a pretty far range.

It actually has less startup than most fireballs.

It’s not very practical, bet it would be really cool to see in a match.

Well, the move itself starts up fairly fast but it takes a while to get to the point that it actually connects and cancels fireballs. Normally you get hit before you can clash the fireball. So yeah it would be really awesome but it seems very impractical :\

Honestly sometimes I think it might be better if it didn’t fireball-clash, since its fireball properties make it less viable as a poke against characters with fireball immune moves. I’ve had Balrog’s turn-punch and Yun and Yang’s shoulder both avoid it completely and hit me since the fist is technically a fireball o_O

I think thats a waste of a focus crumple and meter, unless youre trying to show off of course. It would be smarter to take guaranteed damage off the crumple instead of throwing a hail mary like that and hoping they dont block. Honestly i dont use EX slash unless its to go through fireballs at long range and get an ultra off the juggle to finish them off or at the end of long combos to reset the damage scaling and land an ultra.

Anyone know any good combos off the CH f.mk?

true, that fireball cancel property is useless and takes away from the move.

It sorta depends on how far away you are or how difficult a combo you want. I generally go for cr.lp, cr.hp xx tatsu. If you are at the right distance you could do b.mp, b.mp xx chop or any of another of wide variety of combos. cr.lp,cr.hp xx tatsu just seems the most reliable

I know Oni sort of makes better use with EX moves, but anyone find any cool reset/raging demon set ups?

only thing i could find was cross up/air tatsu -> b.MP reset, cancel b.MP into Raging Demon

EDIT: Moved certain content to much more relevant/specfic Oki thread

A few observations after some play time.

I think one thing we are forgetting with his slash game is that HK slash crosse’s up as well, if people are looking for EX I am sure this will catch them a decent amount. Mashing lights or srk’s stuff which is a problem but if you have an opponent who is respecting your offense then it is a good set up, if they are mashing then obvious you can do other things to punish those. I think it is a valuable part of his game

Tried to wait after a focus crumple and hit them into a slash reset, sadly this does not work at all

Also, buffering raging demon on ground has been handy for me, you can do the air one low the ground easily and the game does acknowledge a up-forward input as forward. If you hit it instantly you can punish a back dash though I do not think it is worth the meter

Jumpback.lk hits standing opponents on the head and if they decide to jump towards you, you can do an air-ragingdemon before you land. Haven’t done this in a match but it’s good to know.

biggest dick oni move

focus attack crumble stun -> air demon

lol that sounds trollawesome

Not sure if this is known or not but figured I’d share. Oni can do instant airdash into air demon. I haven’t tried to apply it in a match yet and im not sure if its even a good or smart thing to do. Only way i can see using it now is on someones wake up to bait out a dp

Right now, I am seriously considering quitting Oni. I just went 20 or whatever bouts with a friend who plays DeeJay. I had no way out of the corner once I got put there. I had no viable means of pressuring him on his wake; stomp was answered with ex upkicks, which win. The vast majority of my pokes were punished. Unless I guessed right on blocking his crossup, I always got put down hard, and had to deal with another crossup on wake; srk didn’t autocorrect, and, unless he made a mistake, would get stuffed or whiff for a free punish. My slashes were generally stuffed.

I feel like I put all that time into learning and practicing combos only I never have the opportunity to land any of them. I think I hit 3x:d::lp: in one match.

This is not fun. At least Akuma has the teleport to get out of the corner and has viable air-hado pressure, with df mixups.

honestly. Jumping in on deejay with anyone isnt the smartest idea.
ground pound is the same air borne moves arent the best on deejay especially if he’s expecting it.
if your pokes were punished they might’ve not been spaced right? if your slashes were stuffed he was either just mashing down on jabs/shorts or you were doing them way to far, and way to much.

And overall it seems like your friend didn’t respect your pressure/Rushdown if he felt comfortable to be pushing buttons.
