well its risky when it comes to mashing ones in between pressure, but as AA, its good enough.
I dont think DJ has insanely good okizeme though…
U2 is a pretty good AA(and not so hard to get full animation hit), you dont wait until they land, but you also dont do it too early. I think besides utilizing his fireballs, normals etc to keep your opponent from getting closer via ground, his back walk speed is something to be considered too(hella fast), you can use it to make the jump ins in that sweet spot for AA U2.
well, crap, I’ve done nothing but play oni now for 4 hours and I’m getting raped. Yeah, I suck, but I have no offense against 'Sim’s zoning, Yun’s shenanigans, DeeJay’s constant crossover/ poke-ya-till-ya-die crap, Vega’s zaniness, and all Dictator has to do is headstomp me continuously. It’s been… .
uuuh… I’ve been only playing Yuns all day… so vs Yun, like, don’t spam fireballs or f.HP too hard. Otherwise, this matchup is easier than you’d think. Almost any move you have stuffs divekicks for free, and anytime you land a move you do tons of dmg and stun.
But like Kahmos said, learn your normals and what they do and their spacing. Learn your opponents spacing as well (Yun can’t touch you from past mid-screen? Damn son). Keep playin like everyone else lol
So after a block lk slash, doing an instant mk stomps is an alright mixup. Lk slash is -2 on block (ken super punishes, hp srk does not, also someone else posted frame data confirming this) so there are only a few punishes for this move (grapplers and a few supers). Your opponents options are to srk, neutral jump hp/hk, mash jab or os grab with a c.mp/c.fp, backdash or jump back. Everything else should get beaten by the stomp (grab attempts, os with c.kicks, other specials)
Reversals comes down to reading the opponent, some will whiff though (ken’s hp srk, etc) if it sticks out far enough. (oni passes over them on the way down from the stomp) Beat this obviously by blocking after right after the blocked lk slash, just know which reversals are 2 frames startup or better that can hit him.
Mash jab is actually rather annoying. I thought I had a good setup to beat crouch techs, etc, but it doesn’t look like he gets far enough up in the air fast enough to beat a simple c.jab from most people. If the opponent is trying to crouch tech it should stuff that however. I noticed that os’ing the tech with other normals like c.mp or c.fp in most cases would also tag oni.Beat this option by srk’ing after the blocked lk slash. They really need to mash on the jab fast to punish before oni gets too high in his stomp, so there really is no time for them to do a late crouch tech or something of that sort. Even a very late crouch tech with guile or sakura (os c.fp) will usually get stuffed or trade in your favor (they get knocked down, you get reset in the air).
The** neutral jump normals** (hits oni on his was up to do the ground pound), back dash, and jump back all seem to be** beaten by a s.fp done right after the blocked lk slash**. This of course would lose to them simply grabbing, spamming jab, or reversaling.
So i suppose we are looking at a 3 way mixup after a blocked slash, at least its something to augment his seemingly poor rushdown for the time being. (unless I missed something of course! please point out any flaws in these setups if you can find them)
Bait and punish, Oni is really good at it ones you get it down. Lk.slash loops/confirmed comboes are awesome, and once you have the meter, try switching to an ex-slash, if it hits, free ultra, big damage. Rince and repeat. Sim is a beast vs. Oni, I admit.
Is it normal that I think Oni is cute (no homo, I’m a girl lol!) Well…** green** Oni at least. He looks like a cuddly evil troll. I’d give him a hug if I saw him walking down the street… but I don’t think I’d live to tell that tale. Hahaha. I almost want to pick him up just for his green color. In Japan do they have any Oni alts that make him look more trollish? If so can someone link me vids or pics of them?
Those are really his new alts? Not a texture hack? What the hell is up with Evil Ryu’s hair? As far as Oni goes I think I would just stick with default green. Seems the most trollish.
in japan, at least the alts in the first pic was already released… the 2nd one, not yet so cant say if its real or not but looks plausible enough imo
Not really on topic I guess, but does anyone know where to get Oni alternate costume? Like I’ve searched the PSN store, and there was no costumes for the newcomers in AE ):
I’m STRUGGLING to be effective with Oni. His f.FP has awesome range and cancels FBs, but its so fast and reaches so far you have to be completley pyschic to snuff a FB with it.
His wake-up game so far feels like ass, and his mobility in general feels like ass -s so when fighting Gief (my actual main) - it feels like a rape fest in the making.
Fortunatly against the non-grapplers I seem to do ok, his air dash mix-up has worked well against Guile players, I’ve been practicing tiger knee air-dash into hurrican kick to throw people off as to my movement.
I have found no use for the air raging demon, can’t get a good bait on it.
I’m struggling to land his target combo as well, seems like his only real offensive means is to jump in or to poke or to try and get the opponenet to jump…initiating offense with him feels difficult - especially from a spacing stand point. With normal shotos I can just pop a few fireballs to dictate pace/reactions and go from there, but the distance where Oni is effective at throwing fireballs (medium) doesn’t lend itself to it. I feel as though I’m just walking forward mashing some combination of c.rh, f.FP, s.mk, s.rh or f.rh.
That damage is nice as fu#k though when landed heh.

Yeah he can FADC his DP, dunno if it was a change form the arcade (I ignored it entirely until it was coming to home) though. I can actually combo dp xx fadc xx U2 (no animation, less damage than U2 by itself - was like 400-450 from what I remember). Just wait until the second hit of the DP before FADCing.
By the way, I have a question, something I REALLY couldn’t figure out. I’m not real into the combo mechancis, but is there any reason for the damage of a combo to change? I was in training mode just trying to figure out basic comboes
Oni(U2) vs Ryu(U1) @ Training Stage
Combo - j.hk, b.mp,s.fp, hurricane kick (fk)
If Ryu had full health It did about 336 damage. If I did it to him again before his health regenerated, it did like 326, then 306, and eventually it dropped down to like 270 or so. Is this a normal game mechanic or am I missing something? This also applied to ending with DP instead.
BTW methinx hurricane kick > DP for combo ender (unless adding U2 via the above combo), pushes’em in the corner.

I prefer the red version (any kick in the arcade), but the OG blue has grown on me since someone called him Papa Smurf somewhere on the Oni board.
The real trolly looing one to me is the yellow-ish color.
lmao papa smurf, I got to check out blue and yellow now xD
That’s normal. It’s been in each sf4 game.
If Oni had FADC srk on block, hed prob be top3 in the game.
As it stands, im approaching srk on wake up much like those pesky ex headbutts we all hate. There is nothing wrong with going for a risky wake-reversal, its just like back in the days, and this is why i love using him. Im happy to see players like Wao, Eita and Wildcat815 playing him as well, thats gonna provide for some nice youtube viewing at work hehehe
Also, didnt bother reading most of this forum, but after a cross up air Tatsu, u can connect a Hk Hurricane for not bad damage
Oni…man his normals are fantastic. Learned today f.HK snuffs out Adon’s jag kicks like BAM.
And his DP is not bad at all. The lack of the ability to FADC it on block sucks, but who cares? Lol, that DP is fantastic…if it were not for that shortcoming, it’d be far and away the best DP in the game hands down.
as an AA, which version is best of SRK btw
