I'm hotter than you!: Poison Match-up thread * Open for Discussion* (Updated: 8/28/2014)

My advice is to just stay calm, wait, and act accordingly. In Yun’s case I doubt he wants to put you in the corner because if you flip the script on him, he’s in trouble. Remember to anti air dive’s with her standing medium punch, occasionally throw out a standing light so if yun does a lunge, you will stuff it. Other than that just stay calm when he pressures you. If you freak out and try to press a thousand buttons, you’ll get counter hit a lot and it could either cause you to be dizzied, or allow yun to do a red focus combo.

Man, Boxer gives me trouble. Really not sure what to do in that matchup.

Unfortunately I haven’t had much Boxer experience with Poison. So most of what I mention would probably be theory.

I think this is a match you will have to play very patiently and use your zoning tools to keep him out. Although Poison does have her pressure game, it’s not an ideal situation you will want to be in with Boxer. Poison does have a very fast 3 frame jab (cr.lp) but I still think Boxer has better pokes overall. If you do find yourself close to Boxer, then her LMT may be able to go over his crouching pokes - although I think his cr.mp will beat it flat out. You may want to throw out a focus attack to try catch the cr.mp. you can also use her overhead at a safe distance to open him up for some combos (since Boxer may be holding down-back. You should even be able to overhead into super for decent damage (I don’t think you will be using ex fireballs and ex lmt’s as much in this match, so you should be able to build meter).

your usual wake-up pressure may not work against Boxer i.e. meaty fireball on wake-up as I believe Buffalo head is fireball invincible in the first few frames. so either throw out the mp fireball at a safe distance, or try throw out the HP fireball at max distance and see how he reacts. walk in close every now and then to bait out the buffalo head for a full punish. You could try cross him up, with J.lk or even just hop over him with LMT/overhead while he is lying on the floor - this will make sure he loses charge for most of his moves for awhile - just be aware of any reversals, such as Buffalo head.

You will want to zone him out with your fireballs and st.lp and st.mk. st.lp is quite fast and it has a deceptively long hitbox, you could probably deal with all his dash punches with this alone. cr.mp may be better here compared to the usual cr.mk - cr.mk might have slightly better range, but it also extends Poison’s hurtbox, where with cr.mp the hurtbox is slightly behind the hitbox. you will also want to zone him out with your fireballs. mix them up with different strengths so you don’t become too predictable - chip away at his health with your fireballs if you have to. If you have the life lead it becomes a lot harder for Boxer and he will have to start taking risks. The Hp fireball should be really good for turn punches, as it lingers on screen and he should have a difficult time getting through it. If he starts to jump over your fireballs try throw out more HP fireballs, if he lands on them you can combo off it (ultra 1, LMT + followup etc.) for decent damage. If he does manage to jump over your fireballs and you are decently spaced, then st.Hk could potentially be a good anti-air in that situation.

You could possibly also deal with Boxer’s dash punches with Poison’s backwards throw as the throw range is a little further than her forward throw (not as Godlike as Chun’s unfortunately). I think ultra 2 may also be a good ultra for this match, as you may be able to punish dash punches with it - the range is not that great, worse than her normal throws, but the first 5 frames do offer invincibility: you might even be able to ultra him out of his dash for a nice hefty amount of damage (510 damage with full ultra).

edit: mk KBG may also have its uses for breaking ex dash punches.

I haven’t had much of an issue with balrog. When I play him I try to keep her HP AE on the field to when get turn punches into it, I can add extra damage. I think if poison has control of the field she is fine.

Updating Boxer, Decapre, and Vega.

I’m new to poison, I want to have a good backup and she just seems to mesh well with me. I came here for matchup knowledge but my question is why are there MU numbers without reasons for some of the characters? There is a vega player I fight a lot where I go to play and it says poison loses the match 4-6, but no reasons why. Anybody got some helpful insight? Vega is a *****! Lol

I have to say rose vs poison is 5-5 as even though she can absorb our fireballs and has better buttons. We can punish her failed reflect attempts and make up with the pokes with our own damage.

yea i don’t think we lose to ryu and ken at all. and i don’t think bison or ibuki are 3-7 bad match ups.

Ibuki is a 6-4 match up but it feels worse because we can’t anti air her properly so she gets in for free at the moment. Ryu and ken are 5-5 imo and sagat is probably 3-7 until Poison gets to mid range in which its probably 4-6 there.

i think we beat ken and ryu 6-4. poison can out zone them and win with that no problem.

I haven’t had a ton of trouble with Balrog. Her focus attack is so good that he can’t just dash punch raw. I don’t throw out a ton of AEs unless he’s far away, you have to play a patient footsie game with him because his buttons are good. And yes, the meaty fireballs don’t work so well against him, I think ambiguous cross-ups or safe jumps/empty jumps into lows are a better idea.

the mu I feel the hardest is blanka.

Not sure how I would rate it. But it feels bad.

And elf feels absolutely weird.

Adon really doesn’t feel like a 5-5 at all.
He can just keep spamming his specials all day long.
And once he has U1 you can forget about throwing a fireball at him.
Massive sigh.

It is really because this is a matchup where it’s up to you to play a good footsie game and pick and choose when you do things. Either way it can go your favor or his depending on who’s playing more solid.

I’m not sure about the ELF matchup either, but I theorize it could be bad.

Poison - Ken is 4 - 6 I agree. I fought against a lot of Ken players with her and while her fireball game is slightly better, he can really destroy her after he gets the knockdown or/and put her in the corner.

It’s hard for Ken to get in though. I find I can keep him out easily with mp and hp fireball. Cr.hp and St.hk. I played Ken since vanilla though so I know the character in and out and it’s not a bad match up for poison. I wish to run into Ken during tournaments

Here’s some tips for the cammy and decapre match up. As well as some of this info can be applied to other match ups.

Their reversals are 5 frames I believe so they are easily safe jump able. Poison can safe jump them off any knockdown quite easily.
After 3 rekkas, immediate forward dash, immediately neutral jump and do hk on the way down near the end of the jump. This will land a meaty j.hk if they block or try anything, if they dp or ultra or anything like that you will block it.

After a back throw, hold up+forward during the back throw to perfectly time the jump in, and use j.lk. This will be an ambiguous jump in that crosses up on some chars and hits front on others, if decapre does reversal it doesn’t auto correct and you hit her back shoulder into a combo, she’s forced to block. Cammy is forced to block but if she dps she Flys away, you can OS ultra 1 to catch her and maybe even have enough time to land and do u1 if your reactions are good enough.

After lmt an instant hp fireball is entirely safe from reversals if you block, you can also do a j.lk cross up that safe jumps the reversals. The timing is a little bit more strict, you have to pause a little bit before you jump it’s not an immediate jump in. Practice this one as it comes in handy to mix up with aside from always using the safe hp fireball. I find that doing a crouch right before jumping helps my timing. It’s a very small delay so practice that one. After a forward throw you can do 2 forward dashes and a neutral jump hk like the rekkas safe jump. I like to do other mix ups revolving around whiffing and meaty hitting my hp fireball and throws.

Practice these set ups and it will make match ups much easier. The rekkas safe jump especially, it’s pretty much universal on everyone with a 4 frame or slower reversal. I think it even works on zangeif and beats his lariets out right. So don’t use it on shotos with 3 frame reversal they can’t be safe jumped (ryu, akuma, oni, e.ryu, ken* his mp and ex dp can be safe jumped which are his go to anti air dps but he can still do hp or lp dp) but yea it’s a great way to maintain pressure after a basic rekkas combo which usually doesn’t offer much options afterwards

So yea:

Rekkas, forward dash, n.j.hk

Back throw, j.lk

Lmt, (slight delay) j.lk

Forward throw, forward dash, forward dash, n.j.hk

here is my match up rankings for what i feel confident in, i don’t agree with most of yours. If blank, i haven’t faced good enough opponents enough to deem the match up.
