Played around 30 matches vs a Hawk just now. Never played vs Hawk before, or read anything about the matchup, so it was a quite interesting session.

Anyway.

  • Hawk dives were easily stopped by s.hp and s.mp (or j.hk-combo)

  • Hawk’s j.lp pretty much ruined everything and rendered charge moves useless. s.hk worked a few times, but usually not

  • Almost all of Blanka’s j.normals (except j.lp and j.hp) were stopped…

  • Elec works as anti-air, but after a few elecs, Hawk started doing j.mp or j.hp and beat me out of it, c.lp, tick 360 (i know I should’ve hopped or rev throw, but I couldn’t :s)

I’ve heard Blanka’s “supposed” to win this matchup, but the session ended with 16-14 in Hawk’s favor.
Any indeep strats vs this pink nightmare, or am I doomed to j.lp and elec all day long? :s

Ok, so how do you BEAT a Blanka? I cant really beat even a mediocre Blanka, especially with Gief. When using Ryu I do alright, but I keep getting handled by the endless jump ins and rushdowns.

If it is pink hawk its unwinnable lol jk. That match is all about zoning Hawk with your normals more than anything, as well as baiting 360’s.

how often do you guys LK vert ball on wakeup? Does it really make it impossible for you to be crossed up? and why LK? Do the other kicks work too?

and what about crossup horiz ball? A lot of people I play tend to forget about slide after mixing it up a little and I seem to land it a lot, but i never crossup h. ball into electricity or other, id much rather just try to slide again or mix up with a jump in… am I missing out here too?

I think LK has or at least seems to have invinvible frames.

don’t crossupball too much… you’ll get predictable.

as for beating hawk, yeah… play him like a faster version of gief…he’s cake

for being blanka? umm… poke him and spam shit? LMFAO that’s about all you need… normals and basic zoning skills.

gief is blanka’s easiest matchup, so you need to work on your overall ability to win this fight.

upball goes straight up is the only real difference.

but i can’t really think of any reason to use lk over any other upball. I piano all 3 on stick.

none of the balls have invincibility.

all hit first frame from execution.

someome should practice mode and check the hiboxes, cause none are true invincible. but lk may have a higher priority hitbox. I doubt it though.

the thing about blanka is that he can’t be true safe jumped. safe jump means you block IF they reversal, and force them to block if they don’t reversal.

since blanka’s upball is active 1st frame, it means he cannot be safe jumped.

what can happen though, is that the aggressor (opponent jumping/meatying you) can time his meaty late such that it will beat your upball clean.

i.e. balrog low strong’s glove is invincible and can meaty and beat upball clean.

claw can do a wall dive claw swipe meaty such that it will beat your reversal clean.

dic can do a slight late crossup forward and beat your upball clean.

you guys will probably have seen shit like j.lk beating reversal shoryu’s from the back side, or guile or dj upkicks on the back side getting counter hit by blanka’s j.short if you jump them late. they’ll do the move, but it’ll come out back side and get hit in it’s vulnerable area.

anyways, long story short is that if you opponent knows how to jump blanka, he can jump in a way that his hit box will beat your upball clean. but a true safe jump will almost always get cuonter hit. I know dj’s j.forward gets hit clean, except maybe at max max range, ryu’s j.roundhouse from old school (CE/HF ryu) will beat it clean if it’s deep enough.

I usually just do it anyway if i see them airborne. worst case scenerio is you get air reel which is probably safer than the block mixup.

concerning crossup ball mixups, it’s great vs. charge characters to fuck their charge (but really xup short does the same thing and fucks their down charge too). it’s good if you time the ball so that you land just before they wake up and the direction they block is pure guess. free meaty f+strong/low forward mixup. good for quick damage but beware reversal grabbers, since reversal grab will beat it almost always.

I’m having problems against solid cammy players. j. strong is pretty much shutting me down

You can swat her out of the air with straight up j.HP. Basically do anything that will catch her above or behind her hit box. I’m thinking you might be able to do the Chun Li thing and beat her out of the air with s.HP if you hit her in the back.

I double tap, but sometimes I mess up and tripple tap and get elec. I was playing a friend and landing it pretty consistently against knee bash loops, very satisfying :).

Viscants parry arguements were brought up in some thread and I went looking for 'em cause I was bored. Anyways he mentioned some Blanka vs Claw ST stuff.

What should blanka have done?

edit I’m not sure if this is new. But I did a crossup super yesterday in the middle of the stage after a bite. I did a strong ball crossup and wanted to do headbutt, but instead I got super. Maybe it’s new because the strong ball travels a bit less far and makes this possible now. I did it on honda in training mode (honda because I wanted to test a combo on him but then i just started playing around with setups).

I couldn’t do it again for the life of me though and seems really impractible cause you need to be EXTREMELY fast with the strongball for it to crossup and not hit the opp. BUT, it was really freaking cool.

Can someone please tell me what in the holy hell do I have to do to get out of Balrog’s throw loop? Blanka has no moves that are invulnerable so even if I do reversal… whatever attack, I get thrown out of it. What the hell am I suppose to do? This game seems really dumb at times. The mixups are far too easy, far too hard to get out of and hella effective…

P.S. Sorry if this has been asked already and sorry for the rant. This game is just really frustrating at times…

Dude, I could of sworn I did every kind of ball he has and I couldn’t get out of that shit. I’ll try again next time though.

this is exactly right. but even then it’s very hard to get supered, since blanka has dash and j.short.

there’s a good 10 pixels are so of advantage to blanka, but that only means you CAN counter grab every time, you still have to do it, which can be hard.

i’m pretty sure boxers meaty trades with ball though and leads right back into meaty tap/rushpunch repeat.

but yah, counter grab or die. you can throw the meaty, or grab before he grabs you.

just swallow it online though, timing is fucked online, people who use it are being desperate.

but in reality this a losing match 8 times out of 10, because the best way to beat the throw shenanigan, is to never get into it but boxer simply owns you on the ground. and forcing it is hard, cause you need to be tight on the spacing (out of his grab range) and prepared for his other reversal options (d+u+P headbutt/super)
