This is cause Street fighter is a beloved series by many. I think ST is fighting game perfection, Alpha3 was a ton of fun other than V-ism infiinites, 3s wasn’t completely my cup of tea but was masterful design nonetheless. So all these legions of players who enjoyed SF2, SF3, and/or SFA series were thrilled when they heard SF4 was coming. It was marketed well, received great reviews, had online, featured the entire SF2 cast.
The top players stick with SF4 because its where the money is at, and most of the others just follow the top players around because it makes them feel special.
If there was money in Shaq fu you can bet everyone would be playing that game at evo.
I remember someone had a quote in their sig that was from Daigo(?) that basically said something akin to," It isn’t the best game, groundbreaking, etc. But it was the newest SF, and you play it to support the series. It’s just what you do." I always thought that summed it up pretty well.
There’s no money in Shaq Fu cuz the game looked like garbage, sounded like garbage and played like garbage.
SF4 on the other hand is well designed both in terms of graphics, sound and gameplay.
On top of that it carries a legacy and in my opinion it totally lived up to it.
Sure it isn’t perfect and has some annoying flaws, but go show me a game that is flawless.
In my opinion the strong points of the game overshadow its flaws by a large margin and the only thing the SF franchise needs at this point is way better online features.
I hope the team Ono assembles is either for a new SF game or another Vampire Savior.
Nobody wants that, A team that doesn’t even play their own games and throws out designs of what made that series. it’s pretty obivious in previous patches they don’t even know what the meta game is. Like AE to 2012 where was the fix for unblockables? They were found before then. Even D44/BAS and Nuki used to work at capcom a lot of the people that weren’t programmers or testers played the games to the extent they found bugs before the community did.
unfotunately only recent games are tournament games within the FGC 99% of the time. That’s why SF4 is played the most, its simply the newest and if you back track FGC history this is what we’ve always done.
I don’t particularly like it. Sometimes good games die off before they should to make way for newer games that are less challenging overall. Its just the FGC nature that SF4 is getting a lot of play. It could of been alpha 4 with a whole different system and it would still get this much play so it really doesn’t matter what version of SF it is as long as its the newest.
I always thought EVO should have a legacy tournament, any game that has managed to hang around forever should be ran at EVO in a legacy tournament every year. ST, 3s, kof 98\02um versions, mvc2, and maybe vsav but it may not last in the US.
I’m not the biggest fan of SF4 but I’ve still logged 200 hours into it. I love the franchise as a whole, I support it whenever I can. Do I wish SF4 was more like A2, ST, and CVS2? Sure. I play it because I can find some fun in it AND want the franchise to continue past it.
That isn’t entirely true. SF4 is actually liked by many, or there would be no money in it in the first place.
Just because you guy’s crappy niche fighter isn’t being played as much doesn’t mean that this is the only conclusion possible. I’m sure you all were playing sf2 in the arcades totally because you thought about all the little quirks in the game, rather than it just being a fun game a lot of people were into.
It’s mocked because it is the number 1 game. Kind of like LeBron James or Tom Brady, some people only want to see it fail.
I don’t hate it, I just wish other games had the amount of online presence that it has (MK, Injustice). Killer Instict will most likely have it, but that’s chiefly due to it being a launch title for the new console generation, and SF5 about 4 years off.
This is true the hate is ridiculous. Trust me on the SF4 threads I criticize the game a lot, and I don’t think it is of the quality of ST, SF2 Hyper fighting, SFA3, SFA2, or 3s. Not near the quality of those games. However I still enjoy playing it, otherwise I wouldn’t bother.
For people that are bitter and think SF4 is stealing a lot of players, that isn’t true. Many of those casual players aren’t going to touch the niche titles cause they aren’t into anime, and the fame of SF2 as well as being so familiar with the characters already is why they picked it up. I know a lot of people who never play fighting games that picked SF4 up, cause they remember how huge SF2 was and know a lot of the characters.
