I’ve already been using Shuma and Akuma as partners for Dormammu but was wondering how they’d do on a Wright team. Mystic Ray is a great screen clearing assist getting rid of annoying projectiles and assists like Sentinel Drones and Hidden Missiles whilst also being a threat to characters like Nova, Doom, Zero and Morrigan who like to fly around a lot and make landing an Objection a bit difficult without it. Akuma Tatsu is the main get off me assist for Wright when gathering evidence or to lock down the opponent trying to get out of Objection range, also a good assist for locking down as Shuma for cr.medium>cr.heavy jump cancel mixups and starting his Mystic Stare loops, if all else fails level 3 X-Factor Akuma can more than handle himself.
I’m still new to the game and have a lot to work on but these are ideas I’ve had buzzing for a while to try out. Thoughts?
I’d say swap either Shuma or Akuma for Spencer. If you think that Shuma on point is workable, then I guess it’s ok. I’m sure you can create some fairly damaging combos with Tatsu and missile backing up Shuma. But from what I understand about Shuma (I don’t have the character so I don’t know much about him), his mobility is lacking and some of his hit confirms are awkward. Having that kind of character paired up with Wright is risky, especially against hard zoning teams or characters with better mobility.
It seems good for defensive play, but you need at least one character on your team with good mobility to get the hit. Shuma seems to have the mixups (cr.m or overhead and cross up overhead or fake crossup overhead, if I recall correctly) but not the mobility. Akuma has decent mobility, but poor range on his normals. Wright doesn’t have either (super slow overhead, poor lows, bad mobility).
Hey guys, i’m trying to make a team around PW in Marvel since i’m trying to pick it up. Right now, the characters i’ve dabbled with are Deadpool, Captain America, Thor (all Vanilla experience with these guys), Hawkeye and Doctor Doom. Right now i’m pretty comfortable with Doom and Deadpool but I feel i’m not doing too much with them at my level.
Phoenix Wright can benefit from quite a few assists and team compositions. Wright/Deadpool/Doom could be alright. PW likes an OTG assist like kantanarama as it allows him easy objections off air throws and other hard knockdowns. Quick work is also great giving him a low assist (very helpful in turnabout) and more importantly is invincible all the way through as a crossover assist. The number one most important thing with Wright is survival so having a way out of pressure is very welcome. Doom is arguably the best assist character in the game. You would want to go with Plasma beam or Missiles. I personally prefer Plasma Beam as it is fast, fairly safe, and has high durability, but Missiles is also great interrupting combos and slowing down the offense of your foe. Deadpool, being primarily a keepaway character, also appreciates Doom’s assists. Other than that Strider (Vajra), Dante (Jam Session), Shuma (Mystic Ray), Hulk (AA Gamma Charge), and Dormammu (Purification) are good for controlling space and keeping you protected from jump ins. Spencer is a common choice too as he allows Wright to combo into his stun state for lots of evidence gathering time. Vergil is also good for his rapid slash assist, which can push people full screen on block, as well as his crazy comeback potential.
With those characters, Deadpool + Doom is your best bet. Hawkeye might work, but I don’t think there’s anything he adds that no one else can provide.
As mentioned above, Spencer is a common choice for a few reasons: Ability to extend Wright combos so that he can stun the opponent, semi-useful anti air assist, invincible hyper DHCs, ability to set up Maya hyper for unblockables, ability to use Wright’s dog assist for unblockables, mixups and extensions, damaging combos that allow Wright to pick up at least 5 pieces of evidence.
Vergil is the most effective anchor in the game, second to Jean. Having him + another character that he works well with (e.g. Dante) as a backup plan is never bad. Also makes DHCs safe, can create unblockables with Maya hyper, can bring in Wright safely with Round Trip, and can set up an Objection if Round Trip hits a grounded opponent. Rapid Slash pushes the opponent away from the corner and is a great assist for bullying people in the corner (not as good as Jam Session though so don’t abuse it or you’ll lose Vergil).
Well rounded characters such as Magneto and MODOK aren’t bad choices either. They don’t offer the same forms of synergy like Spencer does, but they have better neutral game(s).
Hey anyone have some tech to use with vergil + phoenix wright. Been testing stuff for just a bit but all I’ve really got so far is a couple combo extensions
extension 1: launch, dog, h, d.h, round trip
extension 2: d.h, dog, f.h, teleport, round trip.
And a reset by ending a combo with d.h+dog, S, H, teleport (assuming you have used your ground bounce already)
The reset will be a cross up low from the dog which will hit people chicken blocking. Also you need to use the dog at different timing if the opponent is in the corner (with the S instead of the d.H)
This reset works assuming they are holding back when hit by the H and instantly roll.
Still havn’t decided on what team I want to use for phoenix wright. Currently I’m just using magneto/PW/doom since I normally play mag/dorm/doom and he can fit in pretty easily. Looking to make a team with characters that I personally like (not in terms of umvc3 but the actual characters), so trying to make a team with some assortment of: PW, Vergil, Deadpool, Strider, Dr. Strange, Dormammu, Phoenix.
I used Pool / Wright / Strider before with some success, but I think they don’t help much in the way of assists. I’m still currently looking for a team as well
I think turnabout wright needs something to deal with super jumping, like missiles or jam session. He can‘t do much without cellphone and his lack of an air dash makes moving with him in the air hard (he jumps really far in tb mode and has to commit to the direction he jumped in).
Strider: don‘t like this pairing. Neither character uses each others’ assist that well. There‘s a guy called leon ultimate who plays nova/pw/strider (but this is more of a sub optimal nova team than a pw team imo). He has some consistent setups to delay the incoming character. Link to some of his matches. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PjRSsOcMOQ0
Phoenix: nope… Jean strat is to conserve meter. PW is bad at building meter and needs to spend it.
Dorm & strange could work too (dorm purification, pw missile, strange bolts). I think dorm starting is your best bet. Not sure what his ideal spot is, but from the way champ plays him, second is the best. Seems like you need space to level him up (i.e. charge spells) to be effective with him.
Pool / Strider is arguably the best shell for pool. You get unblockables with Get em Missile while locking them down w/ L.Guns. The only problem is Pool doesn’t help Wright that much outside of Katanarama and Strider doesn’t help Wright much either.
You can always swap out characters in a bad matchup, so having a well rounded team is good.
