Thinking of Phoenix/Doom w/ Beam/whoever
I’ve been working on a bunch of teams, mostly combinations of a point or secondary character who can help cover assists with supers and a 3rd character for assist/anchoring. Some of the notables:
–Dorm-pillar/Wright-press/Doom-beam: Dorm character kill xx sphere super, tag Wright evidence, beam, evidence, evidence. Beam instead of missiles because missiles come out too slowly to keep an incoming opponent in blockstun after the sphere ends. Dorm pillar creates a wall behind which Wright can evidence against non teleport characters. Beam helps Wright play defense and has good projectile durability, something pillar doesn’t really have. Wright press assist helps combos even if not in turnabout, and in turnabout, he’s good for Dorm playing defense and for Doom playing defense or offense.
–Dorm-pillar/Wright-press/Doom-missiles: Same reason for Dorm/Wright. Missiles don’t keep the opponent in blockstun during the sphere evidence bs, so that sucks, but on the other hand it’s a better assist for Wright to play keepaway and to help set up evidence on its own, so maybe that’s worthwhile. Not sure yet.
–Dorm-pillar/Wright-press/Rocket-log: Log helps protect both Dorm and Wright. Wright assists help Rocket in combos (including instant overheads) but I don’t expect those to come up super often as Rocket. I’m also not sure Rocket will be a useful anchor. I love Rocket and want to make him work with Wright but I don’t really see it right now.
–Dorm-pillar/Wright-press/Hawkeye-up: Just looking for different variations on Dorm/Wright. I want a character with an assist that can help keep the opponent in blockstun during sphere bs and that can also help Dorm and Wright play keepaway, who makes a good anchor, and who can make good use of Dorm and Wright assists. Hawkeye might be that? Guess I’ll have to see.
–Trish-peekaboo/Wright-dog/Doom-missiles: Trish boomerang super, hard tag to Wright call missiles, 2 free evidences. Dog to build unblockables with Trish. Doom on 3rd because missiles are rad for setting up evidence or playing keepaway and because Doom is a good anchor. Once I tag Wright in, peekaboo and missiles for keepaway. I don’t think this is as good as the Dorm teams.
–Wright-press/Ammy-coldstar/Doom-missiles: When you get two bars of meter, call missiles, and as soon as they start touching the opponent, team super combo Wright/Ammy. Four free evidences on hit or on block, five on characters who don’t have very fast mobility or projectiles, essentially a guaranteed courtroom. And that’s great. But there are some problems here. First, I don’t like trial mode Wright on point right now, even with Doom missiles. The Trish and Dorm teams are nice because they start with good characters and allow Phoenix a good chance to effectively bypass trial mode, but this one doesn’t do that. I also don’t like Wright with coldstar, he’s just not mobile enough to make that assist worthwhile. I also don’t like spending two bars for courtroom instead of one. Wright/Ammy gets Wright into courtroom but that’s it; Wright/Doom is there for missiles; Ammy/Doom is a real nice team, but I prefer Doom/Ammy or at least Ammy/Doom-beam instead of missiles; and both Ammy and Doom are good characters who do well in lots of different matchups. Very close to being really good but just not quite there I don’t think.
–Ammy-coldstar/Wright-press/Doom-missiles: Tried this for Ammy character kill xx slowdown evidences during opponent coming in or for combo xx slowdown dhc Maya shuffle into evidences. But eh, neither really works that well, not as well as the above ideas. And I still don’t think Ammy works all that well with Wright.
–Zero/Wright: Just wanted to see how well Zero rekkoha dhc Maya into evidences would work. Answer: not well.
Hm. Right now I’m thinking most about Dorm-pillar/Wright-press/Doom-beam and Dorm-pillar/Wright-press/Doom-missiles. Gonna keep looking for fancier setups.
Dormammu/Wright sounds reallly nice
Didn’t test yet but so far still sticking with Wright (Press the witness)/Frank (Cart)/Hawkeye (Kamikaze) since the cart assist is seriously great for Wright from what I’m seeing. One I get to turnabout with Wright I’ll tag out to Frank and start abusing the hell out of press the witness. (a lot of hits, invincible AND wall bounces? YES)
Was gonna lose hope with this team but now I can see some synergy. Playing keepaway with Wright coupled with Hawkeye’s assist is gonna be really good.
I was just playing around in training a few minutes ago and it really hit me that Wright teamed up with someone like Hawkeye could lead to a strong keepaway game. I’m not intimately familiar with Ultimate right now, but my gut tells me that Hawkeye should make a solid anchor, so getting him and Wright with someone else (I suppose Dorm would work…not my cup of tea) could greatly annoy the opponent.
EDIT: Then again, maybe I just want T. Hawk so badly, I’ll take anyone whom I can call Hawk.
Dorm/Wright is also really nice because press the witness assist allows you to call press then teleport and make your opponent have to guess which side you’ll be on. I feel like Dorm/Wright/Doom gives me some nice matchup options. Once I get Wright in with evidence, I can either tag him back into Dorm to continue Dorm with press/missiles if I prefer the Dorm matchup, or I can keep Wright in with pillar/missiles if I prefer the Wright matchup or if I have the right evidence, or tag back into Dorm with an eye to getting a TAC into Wright if I think I really really need turnabout.
Also I think Dorm/Doom is a really nice pairing. Beam for more offense and mixups, missiles for more keepaway and zoning. And if I don’t end up with turnabout, Doom on the end is pretty sweet.
I don’t like Wright with Frank. Having one character you need to power up might already be too much in this game, but two is just untenable I would think. Plus I don’t really know what shopping cart does for Wright. Are you trying to play offense? Does it help you search for evidence as well as other assists? Does Wright’s press help Frank? Does Frank help Wright level up, or does Wright help Frank? Personally, I think the answer to all of that is no.
Well when powered
Well Frank’s cart assist is sort of good for Wright because of the block stun and how much horizontal space it covers. If the opponent push blocks then they are giving the three evidence away to Wright. To be honest though these two do not make for a good team. Frank West has long combos but, he really benefits from an assist that causes a wall bounce to extend the combo.Wright has such in an assist in Press the Witness, but that only when hes powered up. As for Wright’s other assists they really don’t help Frank. Missile has low durability and is more of a gimmicky low, and Frank has a roll to dodge projectiles so the Papers assist is useless to Frank too.
I’m playing Frank and Wright on the same team and they have synergy, Wright’s assist when in turnabout does a lot of hits which helps him level up, shopping cart assist can be used to zone to help Wright get evidence. Frank’s Roll and Press The Witness together are unstoppable. I mean, it’s still day 1, let’s not rule anything out.
Dorm/Wright/Doom is strong, no question. The Dorm/Doom synergy has been well documented, and they both help get Wright get to Turnabout mode. I knew I wanted a Wright/Doom team, but I didn’t consider Dorm for the 3rd slot. I played a Dorm/Doom team in Vanilla, so I’ll look into it, thanks.
Right now, I’m messing with Trish/Wright/Doom. I find her to have the same lockdown potential as Dorm with Round Harvest->tag Wright for evidence, but I like her over Dorm because she has better assists IMO (peekabo with Maya shield in particular). Kind of theory fighter tho, since I’ve just started to pick up Trish.
edit: just noticed you already tried this team too. Ok, moving right along then…
Dorm+ Wright sounds boss. I’ll definitely have to play that out.
GR + PW has been doing okay I guess but I’m still dropping combos with GR on account of his new feel. Drones haven’t been that great for me. I think some instant pressure would be much better to keep people away.
I just started playing UMvC3, never owned vanilla but now that I have ultimate I’m hoping to get decent. So far my team is PW, Chris, and Frank. I want to change Frank cuz i just flat out suck with him but I want to keep chris. Does PW really synergize with Chris and also who should my third character be from what I’m reading, Doom and Dorm seem to be really good choices.
Thing is, LVL 3+ Frank and Turnabout Mode Wright have good synergy, but the problem is getting them both to those levels. I was considering using Wright/Frank after I figured out that one Wright mission where you use Frank’s cart to switch from Investigation to Trial and land 3 questionings, but that combo’s too situational, and leveling both Frank and Wright seems too difficult to do consistently against a good player.
Also, outside of THCs, Wright doesn’t really help Frank level up.
I bought Vanilla the day it came out but never took it as seriously as SF4.
Now I’ve come into Ultimate with my day 1 team of Shulk, Wright, Ghost Rider aka team Judge, Jury, and Executioner…and it’s really frustrating. They make the perfect thematic team anyway…
I hate how this game is still “use Wesker, Doom, and/or Sentinel” as the cure all solution to every team building problem.
How have Vergil and Storm (assists that pushback) been working for people?
In theory, peakaboo seems pretty godly. Maybe not even necessary for Trish to be first?
Running an odd team of RR/Wright/Frank West right now. I had an idea of using Racoon’s trap super, and tag/THC into Wright, Maya shield, and grab evidence on top of the trap. It works decently, though the opponent can activate the trap without it touching, and it’s only useful for evidence gathering.
I’m having a lot of trouble VS teleporters as well and Doom Missiles hasn’t been the answer. He’s so slow to come out that he usually gets happy birthday’d from anyone who can teleport behind Phoenix (of course it works great for guys with up teleports). Someone I’ve found that’s surprisingly effective is Iron Man with his Repulsor Blast as it encases PW in a nice big sphere. Problem is I can’t play him for crap and with the nerfs he got I’m not sure he’s in a good place anyway.
Right now my team is PW/Grappler with AA assist (right now its Shulk but it sucks having her wall bounce taken away by press the witness)/Doom with missiles but it’s not doing well. My general strategy is to get Turnabout Mode asap and force the opponent to block or eat a big combo. If they start blocking then I can land a big command grab with a grappler character and then get my damage that way. Getting to Turnabout mode is the hardest part though as I’m sure you all know
Currently pairing Zero (My old main from Vanilla) with Wright. At first it was for familiarity and to not get rolled while learning 3 characters simultaneously, but I found that if Wright is waiting in the wings with 3 evidence and I land a combo with Zero, Rekkouha DHC Maya Smelting gives Wright enough time to super jump up and land an Objection just as Zero’s super is ending. Works out really well! Then I usually fill the screen with blue crap and raw tag into Zero to get the powerful assist, but it might not hurt to switch to the anchor (Right now it’s Doom, but it might be Vergil later) just to get Wright in that last spot.
Revisiting Wright/Ammy/Doom. Great setups to get into courtroom and then into turnabout with excellent Doom/Ammy-coldstar in between, but they take so much meter! How many bars of meter? Well 2 to get free courtroom, then 3 to get free turnabout… so, 5 meters.
Gonna tell Clockwork about my Doom Ammy Phoenix team that requires me to save 5 bars of meter to get Phoenix into god mode lol.
I’m starting to get confused about team order: should Phoenix Wright be first to get evidence faster, or is it more safe to put him second and have someone like Trish or Dorm first?
I’ve been using Wright/Hsien-Ko/Sentinel, but Wright often dies without being able to gather any evidence. Would Trish/Wright/Sentinel work better? (And not just because Hsien-Ko is bad >_>)
Iron Man’s repulsor blast covers Wright sooo well when he’s gathering evidence, but I really don’t like or know how to play Iron Man at all =/
I picked up Wright on one of my teams, and I have noticed that as a player I’m way more effective getting in your face. With Wright, this is tough without cover, so I used Haggar’s Lariat, and Ghost Rider’s whip chain assist (I forget the name) as it covers the whole screen.
Doom, Dorm, Skrull, and Ammy seem like great ideas…but I just never use them.
What do you guys think of Iron Fist’s flying kick assist? I’ve heard thats a good one to get someone outta your face. I’m currently unfamiliar.
