Anyone out there reading this exceptional set of comics?
IDW has done a damn good job over the past 2 years or so in bringing the TF universe together.
Spotlight Optimus Prime was released today. For those that don’t know, Spotlight books are one shot character stories which have large implications over the overall story arc.
The Spotlight Prime book out today revealed some of the origins of combiner technology. I’ll hold out on too much commentary until others have a chance to join in, but if you haven’t started reading these, the whole Spotlight series is a good place to start. :wgrin:
So in the new Transformers comic it’s like they are in secret, like no one knows they are on planet Earth, kind of like how the Transformers movie is right? Are all of the G1 Transformers present or just a handful?
The scope of the IDW universe is BIG. Things are happening on Earth, Cybertron, and outer reaches all at the same time. Then the Spotlight books show out of sequence stories that have wide character selection.
But yes, the stuff on Earth has a major plot point of keeping the Transformers secret. Decepticons even go to lengths at the beginning to kill humans that know of them.
Just read the last ish of Megatron Origins man that series is fire! Megatron met the three jets Starscream, Thundercracker and Skywarp. Did you know Starscream was like a big Megatron fanboy in the beginning cool! Oh and now Megatron is rocking the Decepticon symbol like on a chain oh yeah! Man they should of done this comic years ago, GO MEGATRON!
last TF comics i enjoyed where war within and G1 from dw. i checked out the idw shit but wasnt too impressed with it. thinking about checking out TF vs JI, though im not too sure about it since i pretty much cant stand jijoe.
First off, sorry for not picking up your question earlier, been really busy…
Jhiaxus
[details=Spoiler]Jhiaxus has done some serious and unethical experiments on Transformers in this continuity. He appears to be responsible for the combiner technology and for several other unwilling experiments.
Arcee is pissed off because the J-man did his experiments on her, effectively giving her a gender, but at the same time, seperating her from all other Transformers. He made her different, a ‘her’ and then discarded her without any explaination.[/details]
Ah OK now I get it thanks a lot. Understanding this I’m getting a bit more interested in the series. Still I need to re-read the comics in order to remember what the Autobots and Decepticons are fighting on again (been reading too many comics I forgot ROFL!)
I’ve said it like this before, DW had better single stories, issues that by themselves were a good read.
IDW does a better job telling a whole story. They present an arc to things that constantly answers questions, but brings up more at the same time. So, really, better story telling.
Also, IDW takes some interesting hard-line stands on things. DW gave occasional glimpses of controversy or interest (armorless Magnus for example). But IDW shows Prime as a true Leader. For example, Prime is supposed to be distant, iconic, and almost unapproachable.
IDW actually shows this. Prime makes harsh command decisions, stomps out humans who intentionally hurt his comrads, and never really seems to be the 100% grade A, flag bearing, always knows what’s best guy that all other fiction makes him out to be.
Sometimes, even the reader has to second guess his decisions then accept that he’s doing what a real Leader would, not just what the Leader everyone wants to have would do.
too bad the art isnt anywhere near as good as DW. also, are there some chapters with dinobots highlights i them. besides the one with shockwave and earth of millions of years ago.
Art is fine with me, I never had any trouble with it.
One thing I liked about the IDW comics is how the Autobots are shown as the reason for the existence of the Decepticon faction.
I loved Megatron Origins. Pretty cool that you can apply the story to just about any Transformers G1 Continuity - 80s cartoon, Marvel comics, IDW, Dreamwave - and it still works.
