Idle/Inactive comics characters you'd like to see more of/back in action

Where the fuck is the original Human Torch?
He’s the one who killed Hitler for crying out loud! Plus he’s real old-school so you know is crazy powerful. Last time I saw him he was Vision or something, I don’t know what happened to him.

Deathlok!
Not another new Deathlok. Not Deathlok 2. Bring back Luther Manning or Michael Collins (and keep Bendis away from them). I don’t know why aren’t

more black people into this character. I know black folks love the X-men because they get the Martin Luther King/Malcolm X parallel with Prof. X/Magneto plus the whole minority thing, also Luke Cage because he represents standing up to the man and all that pedestrian rebellion bs, and Black Panther because he represents the future, but what about a character that is the perfect metaphor for the average black man? I know, I know Luther Manning was really white before he became Deathlok, but 90% of people think he’s black anyway, plus his name is Luther! Michael Collins could work too. I think he was in that secret war 4 or something mini, but I haven’t seen him in regular MU.

Ghost Rider and Doctor Strange gets a mini series every two years or something, and they aren’t even that interesting.(Anybody reading the current ghost rider?) I don’t know why the best character to come out of that crappy 70’s era is also the least popular. Hell, even Luke Cage in his yellow shirt and tiara survived. I’ll rip my hair out if next month Marvel announces a new Dazzler mini-series.

Forge. I know he’s not just an inventor. Why is he always downplayed in X-men? He isn’t as smart as beast, but they could at least write something interesting for Forge. I don’t even think there’s a Forge mini-series. Chamber got one for crying out loud.

Mandarin. Where is this guy? I don’t like the whole “rings on his spine”-deal idea that I saw him last in. Bring back the old smart Mandarin. That one looked smarter and more sinister than his new hands-on version. Plus, there aren’t enough Asian villains in comics.

Egg-Fu. Needs more Asian villains in comics x2. Where is this guy? They can’t retcon the character?

OG Human Torch is coming back with OG WW2 Captain America when they time travel to our time. But yes his body is used by Vision, at least until that body got destroyed and he got a newer body during Young Avengers, I think…

Deathlok was in some comic or another recently, let me look it up…

Doctor Strange is an Avenger. In one month he appeared in New Avengers, Spider-Man, and Wolverine when OMD 2 came out. He doesn’t qualify as inactive lol! He may not have his own book but trust me Shuma-Gorath and Blackheart are jealous…

Forge was in Endangered Species and he is currently in Messiah Complex.

Egg-Fu was in 52.

EDIT: Yeah Deathlok is mixed up in Avengers Initiative.

IIRC Mandarin is supposed to make a big comeback in '08.

Just in time to tie in with Iron Man: The Movie, I imagine.

Darkhawk
Sleepwalker
Kevin Matchstick
Sovereign Seven (this one’s for zephy)
X and some of the other Dark Horse Heroes
Harbinger, Magnus, Solar, other Valiant Heroes
Robocop

The only person i would’ve mentioned was just brought back a couple months back - Adam Warlock.

I can’t think of too many people right now that were inactive that i’d like to see active again. Marvel got a lot of my favorites in the last year into the mainstream for a short bit haha

Shengy, you didn’t like Flight of Bones and The Oath or either of Ennis’ Ghost Rider minis? That Ghost Rider ongoing is crap, though, which is too bad. It might be getting better though. Jason Aaron is going to become the new writer in a couple more issues.

Lol. All I know about Sovereign Seven is that Claremont wrote it. I guess that’s all I need to know!

I’m with you on Darkhawk. He was in The Loners. I think I might check out the TRADE, BABY.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Shade, The Changing Man and the Human Target. And more Doop and X-Statix. I also wouldn’t mind reading more stories of the Golden Age Sandman.

Somebody should do a major revamp of Challengers of the Unknown. I know Chaykin tried a couple years ago, but it wasn’t successful for whatever reason. Painy would say it’s because Chaykin sucks. I really like the Challengers’ tagline: “They were four men living on borrowed time. Time’s up.” How can anyone not be able to take that concept and run with it? And it’s a Kirby creation to boot.

Is Swamp Thing still inactive?

og deathlok is my shit. i got this tub of comics like 5-8 years back from pbs…they were selling them for a 100 bucks…shit was fucking gold…old ass wolverines…i’m talking yellow and brown…all the spider man clonage saga(ya ya i know fuck yall), deathlok…and like all of age of apocolypse. well worth my mom’s hundred bucks haha.

I thought Human torch died and they named the training camp in Avenger’s Initiative in his honor: Camp Hammond.

Deathlok was in the Hood storyline in New Avengers recently wasn’t he?

Darkhawk would be cool to see in a monthly again.

Mandarin has been around the Ironman books for a while now since WWH started.

I wanna see Sunspot again. He was a cool character and he along with Cannonball were the only cool New Mutants.

Swamp Thing is vertigo now, no? So i don’t know if DC can do anything with him in the mainstream DC universe.

I don’t think I would care if Swamp Thing were back in the mainstream DCU, but that’s a character with some good history who deserves another series. Too many good Vertigo books got canceled too early.

  • Haven’t read the current Iron man on-going yet, so I didn’t know Mandarin was back. (3 issues out so far?)

  • Last time I saw Sunspot was in uncanny last year(?), he’s a member of Hellfire Club or something. I’d like to see him back too, even as a villain.

  • Deathlok in New Avengers wasn’t really Deathlok. He didn’t do anything! No dialogue, just smash! FUCK YOU BENDIS!!! The one time he didn’t feel like giving a character any dialogue and he chooses OG Deathlok.

  • I want a Forge mini. I don’t even know anything about the character’s origins. His relationship with Storm (what does he feel now that she’s married?). What about his mystical powers? That kind of shit. Everytime I see him on X-men he’s just around machines pushing buttons. I remember an X-men unlimited issue with him and Storm in the Shi’iar homeworld and he didn’t get much character development there either. Plus his powers are always used so ‘lame-ly’ (if there is such a word). In that said X-men unlimited issue, he made some sort of tech-pole to push some badguy to the ceiling. WTF was that?!?!? At least Beast was an Avenger and he had Trish Tilby, plus he’s the lead X-men science guy.
Is Forge doing much more now in the current X-men or is he still just standing in front of a machine all the time (probably sending people back or forward in time like in that X-men cartoon)?

  • co-sign on Human Target, Golden Age Sandman. Also on X, Ghost, etc. Who owns the rights on the Valiant characters today? (excluding Turok and Magnus of course).

Greatest tagline ever!!!

I liked Flight of the Bones and The Oath. I just included that paragraph about Ghost Rider and Strange so I could compare Deathlok’s lack of presence and cold reception compared to other characters who more or less came out at the same time.

I was recently granted my wish of seeing Beta Ray Bill again, and they even put him on Canada’s premier (only) superhero team, so I was happy even though the comic was just flat out terrible.

It’s odd…I didn’t think that Alpha Flight + Beta Ray Bill + Scott Kolins would ever let me down…yet it did.

Now I want to see Taskmaster and Cassandra Cain Batgirl pop up.

Taskmaster popped up in the first Moon Knight arc. I think that would be kind of cool, if Tasky and Moony became archenemies. The fight they had in that first arc wasn’t as intense as I was hoping.

I think he ran him over with the Moonmobile or something and that was it.

Yeah, that was like the only reason I bought those comics. The fight was like three panels long or something…it was a bummer. And then that was like the old Taskmaster, from before the UDON mini and all those appearances in Deadpool/Agent X…it was like those comics didn’t even happen. He got reconned back. It was a very “meh” appearance, but I guess you can’t complain about these things.

I also think Taskmaster got a few panel appearances as part of the Thunderbolts during Civil War…I think he shot Reed Richards in the face or something before he got crushed with a giant invisible column. And then he got lost somehow and didn’t make the jump to the Ellis Thunderbolts book…that bummed me out too.

Oh, and Fin Fang Foom was another, but he got some burn in Nextwave, so I was satisfied.

Peter David has a “Fin Fang Foom vs Hulk” one-shot out right now!

Alpha Flight was dissappointing

I just remembered Howard the Duck. He made an appearance on that Civil War one-shot. I thought I read somewhere that he was getting a new monthly after that. I guess not.

You know who else are missing in action? The entire goddamn WildC.A.Ts team! (yes, I know it’s redundant because the T in wildcats stands for team, kinda like ‘dc comics’. The ‘s’ in the end however is obviously a typo). Goddamn Jim Lee too busy with the Goddamn Batman.

I was pretty disappointed by the art in Moon Knight. Some of David Finch’s action scenes are pretty cool, but he draws way too many random muscles and stuff sticking out of people’s clothing, and he can’t draw faces and people having conversations. That really destroyed that comic for me. Tasky didn’t look threatening at all, and maybe it is partly because they reverted him back to his “skull in a pirate suit” costume, but still.

And the dude after Finch was even worse. It was like he was trying to copy Finch’s style, except he lacked even the dynamic action perspectives. The final issue of Huston’s run had pretty amazing art, though. I think Moon Knight could have been one of the upper tier Marvel books if Tomm Coker had drawn all of it.

Howard The Duck has a miniseries going on right now. I believe one or two issues are already available on the stands.

I don’t think the WildC.A.T.s are completely M.I.A. There’s a WildStorm: Armageddon issue featuring them written by Christos Gage. Haven’t read it, though. I just wish they would just let Joe Casey finish his Version 3.0. instead of holding off for Jim Lee’s iteration. It still makes me sad that Casey only got to chapter 24 of his epic.

I feel bad for WildStorm. They got great characters and a great sense of a shared universe, but it’s been fucked up for the past couple years. It also hurts that it’s been dragged into all the DC, 52, multiple earths, Captain Atom garbage.

Taskmaster is in Avengers initiative right now.

Cass is going to be in Batman and the Outsiders. So far she hasn’t done much except for kicking Thunder through a screen door and having one gratuitous naked scene. So far I don’t like how they’ve somehow erased all the progress she made in her series and now she’s back to cavewoman kung fu fighter. I don’t have much hope, but at least it’s not Beechen. And Didio can die in a fucking fire.

P.S: needs moar Question. And not lipstick lesbo #2 goddammit. They’ve already shown that Earth-4 Vic is alive and well, so I don’t see why they don’t put him back in and make Renee a pornstar or something. I really don’t give a shit about her.

Is Cassandra Cain still a villain, or did they recon that insanity?

You know what’s odd is that Taskmaster (May 1980) actually appeared BEFORE Deathstroke (December 1980)…and George Perez was the artist on both Avengers and Teen Titans at the time. Guess he was a really huge fan of the swashbuckling blue and orange look.

I wanna see a Ka-Zar vs. Thanos rematch. Let’s make that happen.

As in Savage Land Ka-Zar? I had no idea they faught each other, what was Zabu doing the whole time lol
