Classic mode seems like a good alternative for ST on a next gen console. But can someone please highlight the differences aside from the presentation. Or is it truly identical to the DC version? Isn’t there a speed difference? Can the lower speed be compensated by selecting game speed 4?
I honestly don’t know if there are gameplay differences between DC ST and HDR Classic Mode, or what they might be (aside from aesthetics, of course). Regarding the speed difference: as far as I know (and I may be wrong), the speed difference is between the Arcade and DC versions of the game, and it carried over to HDR Classic Mode. If what I’ve heard is right, then that means there isn’t a speed difference between the HDR and DC versions of the game, but there would be between HDR and Arcade (just as there is between DC and Arcade).
As someone who loves ST and definitely prefers it over HDR, I’m going to have to say that going with Remix mode is the smarter move compared to classic ST. That isn’t to say I’d prefer it, but it is nice to see a new set of tricks moving into the competitive spectrum compared to ST.
However, if we do go with classic ST, Classic Mode in HDR is the obvious choice for it, since it’s on current consoles, and is more visually appealing to a wider audience (I prefer ST’s art personally, but I know I’m the minority on that one). I’d argue for the standard aspect ratio for it, but I can understand widescreen as well. Just having more overhead visible is more visually appealing to me. For the record, I prefer SF4 on standard def for that reason as well.
No, DC is faster than HDR.
It is? I must have either been misinformed or mistaken on what I heard. Thanks for clearing that up.
I believe Ganelon did some speed tests and found that equivalent turbo settings between DC and HDR had HDR running slower. So it was something like (DC T3 ~ HDR T4) or something like that.
Yeah, I never played the DC version, only the arcade (and emulated on GGPO) and HDR Classic, and there’s an obvious speed difference between those two. I thought I’d read there was a speed difference in the DC version fo the game, but perhaps I’m just remembering wrong.
so how close is HDT T4 to DC T3?
I’m not sure how close, but they are almost the same.

Oops, apprently HDR T4 is still slower than DC T4, and based on american tourneys which go one speed higher its even slower than that.
If you have a DC and a frame-by-frame recording tool, you can look at the animaiton of Guile’s sonic boom, and see which frames it skips.
Ideas to help revive the HDR scene:
get off srk forum, get off your computers, get out of your moms basement or couch & boot in hdr to xbox360 & play.

I just added a TLDR basic timeline of DC ST’s speed compared to HDR’s speed goes like this (where each “-” represents roughly 1 timer tick difference by the time a round finishes):
HDR T0=DC T0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - HDR T1 - - - HDR T2 - - DC T1 - HDR T3 - - DC T2 - HDR T4 - - DC T3
Note that arcade ST has different speeds depending on the stage. DC and HDR have fixed speeds regardless of stage. That means the DC version doesn’t match up with the arcade version anyway but it seems DC T3 speed is closer to a few stages from what I saw. And this is when both are set to JP Turbo 3 (US Turbo 2). For whatever reason, the US has always stuck with JP T3 when playing the DC version instead of anything higher (just like we stuck with T3 in the PS version, also based on JP speeds). In the arcade version and CCC2 (using US speeds), we also used T3. So you could almost say we’ve historically stuck with Turbo 3 no matter what the actual speeds are.
