Roster wise Ryu needs to become an old master for nostagia and we need new characters. Its been 25 years and it’d be good for the SF community to hit that refresh button.
That or make him age. I really like how tekken characters got older over the years. Somehow sakura remains a teen from alpha til now

They already explained in this topic that sakura is around 21 years old in SF4 and that uniform is just what she likes to fight in.
The shotos all age in SF3, although its only visible with Akuma who has grey hairs and wrinkles in 3S. In alpha Ryu and Ken are visibly younger than in SF2.

I was cleaning this morning and you guys know how boring that is. So I came up with some Prequel SF5 fanfiction.
After the events of third strike Gill is defeated and the world has a entered a phase of peace. Ken writes to Ryu asking for a rematch at the dojo where they grew up. Upon ariving thry find someone waiting for them. Their old master Gouken. Gouken tells them as long as Akuma is alive the world cannot be at peace and thus continues to train them once more. A year passes and Gouken tells them he has no more to teach and they are both ready to face Akuma. Ryu argues and says Akuma only wants to fight Ryu and does not want to see Ken die. Ken tells Ryu he always has his back that only together they can win because Akuma may bring out the Satsui no hado within Ryu. They leave to find Akuma thanking Gouken for everything. Gouken with no other purpose peacefully passes on stating Ryu and Ken have now surpassed him.
Ryu and Ken arrive at Akuma’s island and engage him to a fight to the death. Akuma nearly kills Ken and upon seeing this pushes Ryu over the edge and his “untapped potential” is unleashed and defeats akuma with the “Perfect Hadouken”. With Akuma defeated the world is now at peace. Ken decides to return to America and open Mr. Masters Dojo which quickly becomes a popular chain around the country. Ryu with no other purpose in life travels the world to continue to hone his skills. Ryu is now the strongest fighter in the world
30 years have passed. America is the #1 leading Martial Arts nation thanks to the Mr. Masters Dojos. Ken is settled down living a normal life(hella rich) with is wife. His son Mel is the top ranked fighter in the US. As for Ryu he lives at the dojo where he was raised. The last 30 years were a time of peace and a golden age for Martial Arts until now… Deep within the labortory where Shadowloo was stopped a Scientist had stumbled upon the place deep underground. He found the remains of the soul vessels Vega created. Using the blueprints Vega had made and new technology he created an army of seth like cyborgs. Ones that have the potential to defeat an opponent and steal their moves. Mel also wanting to surpass his father and Ryu travled to The deceased Akuma’s island and became tanted by his sprit absorbing some of the satsui no hado.(Hooray a flashy kick version of akuma!) The scientist then sells the army to the Antagonist(whoever it may be). The Villian then holds the first World Tournament in 32 years find the best fuel for his army. New characters along with the now old Ryu and Ken take part in this tournament.
One problem with that, by the time 3rd Strike occurs Ryu had already tapped into his potential, he is way more powerful than the satsui no hado could have ever made him.
Here’s an idea for Mel, what if he’s still a kid when the game takes place? Like 11 years old or something. And you get to play as him. That’d be an interesting character, a shoto-trained child prodigy.
That’d be more fun then playing Dan. Sorry never played through the 3s arcade.

Yes, it would be good if there will be an online tournament mode similar to Darkstalkers Resurrection.
Gouken already stated in IV that he has nothing more to teach them. Just look at his win quotes on them. Also, did you mean defeated = killed (you mentioned that Akuma is ‘deceased’)? If Ryu killed Akuma then Akuma had just proven that his philosophy is correct and he has won figuratively.
Also, I think what Ryu seeks is not power, but enlightenment. If that’s the case (much worse if he believes to kill the Buddha as he meet him), then he can never settle down since seeking such is near impossible to obtain in life.
SF5 cast will most likely be AE cast + x Tekken SF additions + 3S cast + new characters. They’re using 3D models after all and it’s simple enough to reuse animations in 3D. Even if they cut characters at the start, you can bet your dirty behinds that the remaining characters will show up as DLC later on.
That’ll be an unnecessarily large roster for the game IMO.
The thing is, we already have the technology to support it since especially for the existing SFIV/SFxT characters since they can just apply the animations to new models.
Even if the initial cast of SFV isn’t a big, I fully expect Capcom to release updates with older character down the line.
