Icewind Dale or Skyrim

So like lately I’ve been torn on what to play next. So you see, what happened was, I played through the Baldur’s Gate Trilogy again. And although I was absolutely hooked onto the game the whole time, it did remind me of some of the annoyances of the infinity engine games. Like having to rest to prepare spells, but then you run into a group of enemies where you really need Spell Y but you haven’t memorized that particular spell so you have to rest again. And of course, all the random traps, some of which can chunk characters. And the fact that many of the tough battles are largely trial-and-error based since I doubt a player is going to know what targets to prioritize or what buffs to prepare in advance on the first try. But aside from that, it has its good stuff as well but I don’t feel like talking about it now.

But now I don’t feel like I can play that game again for a long time or else it will be deja vu nomatter what, so I need to move on. So its like, I want to play something with a barbaric winter feeling. I haven’t played an Elder Scroll game in a while. But I also didn’t get around to Icewind Dale. I’ve heard that it is more hack-and-slash. But since I usually skim through dialogue anyways because of boredom, that may not be an issue. But then, Skyrim is more recent. And if my system can run it acceptably, then Skyrim it is. But I’m unsure of that. See, my 5 year old computer can run Dragon Age: Origins and the entire Mass Effect Trilogy quite well. But Witcher 2 is sluggish. I need to set everything to low just to make the game playable. So if that serves as any reference point, can anybody predict if my computer is up to par for Skyrim. I want to post system specs, but I don’t feel like it right now.

IWD for me personally. It’s not going to fix what you hate about AD&D rules but it’s the better choice out of the two IMO. I just can’t stand TES games. They bore me to tears. :S

You computer should be able to run Skyrim but you might have to sacrifice some details.

TES games tend to be atmospheric, and not great if you have ADD because there’s so much to do. IWD is more narrative based than TES games so if you’re looking for DA type storytelling it won’t be there, a lot of it is left to your immagination. TES games are pretty hard for your early level characters but it becomes comically ridiculous because the game becomes easier after that. I personally would go skyrim. It really is a great game. Don’t forget about the awesome mods too!

There’s a lot of mods, but if you need to discriminate the best from the worst, I suggest you look at these youtube “Skyrim Mods Weekly”

If you do choose Skyrim, look for mods to ballance magic and add spells because magic in the first levels aside from the heal/restortion school are ridiculously underpowered.

If by “so much to do” you mean “pressing two mouse buttons repeatedly, crawling through largely recycled dungeons, fetching item A for person B and spending three hours looking at snowy landscape” then yeah, I agree with you.

Skyrim is a jack-of-all-trade game. It does a bit of everything, but doesn’t really do anything particularly well. If OP enjoyed BGT, he has plenty enough attention to deal with more involving games already.

I heard someone telling me the Baldur’s Gate series didn’t age well, or something like that (like all old games). And it’s over-rated by those wearing nostalgia goggles and what not.

Played part 2 of BG the other day, holy fuck this is quite possibly the best RPG I’ve ever played!!! :open_mouth:

wish they would bring back Baldur’s Gate on ps3

There’s actually some chance of that happening. Some former bioware employees are working on an enhanced version of Baldur’s Gate and I think there might be console ports o_O.

They also said their ultimate goal is to eventually make BG3. I guess we’ll see.

KOTOR.

Console ports would make me go squeeeeeeeeee.

I thought there WAS a Baldurs Gate 3 announcement a few days ago
