I think they all help some, but not really as much as some people make him out to be.
He’s still at a pretty serious disadvantage vs ryu, ken, guile, and deejay. Those players are going to have to think just a little more about how they deal with Honda now that he has some new weapons, but they still have the upper hand in this matchup.
Damn Honda, always force feeding me his Ochio’s. Like this one time I was just minding my own business and here he comes with a bowl and spoon and I knew what time it wa-:blah::blah::blah::blah:
I still hear people complain about HDR Honda often.
Specifically, what change to HDR Honda makes him better against NON-Fireball characters?
Jump short has higher priority, can hit sweeps.
Floating fierce move (jump straight up + fierce) can be steered farther left/right.
Hundred hands easier to execute
Strong and fierce versions of hundred hands have lower priority and all versions do a little less damage
Ochio throw now bounces off the other way, preventing Honda from repeating it in the corner
Ochio throw now deals the same dizzy points as other throws rather than twice as much.
Jab torpedo can destroy fireballs.
Jab torpedo travels shorter distance
Super travels slower before first hit, but travels faster after first hit.
Super now knocks down and juggles.
Hmm, interesting. Well, I think Honda and Fei especially have a chance to get there in HDR this year. But what do I know, I am just a scrub and therefore I should be neg-repped all day, apparently.
Before akuma was banned (hypocritical and premature choice) there are 17 characters in the game and while I do think akuma is top3 in my book that doesn’t take away the fact that there are 16 other characters in the game so odds are in my favor.
Stored ochio is more broken then akuma but neither character is really half as insurmountable to beat as so many srk’ers proclaim at least to me anyways.
Um fireballs and booms makes Honda a sad boy, throw in a couple o jabs and hes gotta work like Gief to get in.
Once you know how to deal with Honda hes gotta read you like a book to beat you. (And if your opponent reads you that well and knows what to do with it, then they can beat you with anyone.)
Honda’s not much better in this game than he was in SF2. He’s more popular than he was back then, but that’s because there are more people willing to learn oddball characters these days with the wealth of information available on the internet. I think people complain about him because they’re not familiar with the match. Once you learn his tricks, he’s no different than any other middle-of-the-road character.
I’d gladly lose stored ochio and fireball-immune jab torpedo for standing fierce chop with significant anti-air properties and walking jab slaps. This would make Honda a more dynamic character while taking care of the two moves that most people are complaining about.
