I use low tiers, am I screwed for competitive play?

IMO Naoki, don’t take Hakan into the competitive world with you. You’ll get Oil Roller-coastered right out the front door.
Because I’ve never seen a single Hakan that would be able to do jack shit competitively.

Fuck that Sanford video. No matter how many words he says, all I hear is: “Be a dick-riding band-wagoner if you wanna win. Yo, yo, yo, Ima keep shit sooooo reaal right now…” LMAO, Ok cheif, whatever you say. If everyone was as chicken-shit about picking a main as he is, all Capcom would have to do is make a game with Yun in 34 different outfits. Problem solved.

Doing this shit, blatantly picking top-tier/over powered options, band-wagoning, used to be some shameful shit to engage in. Not just in FGs but in life too. Now people are just fucking flamboyant with it…“yeah, use top-tier if ya wanna win derp”, proud of themselves and shit. Would you respect someone who’s favorite NFL teamed changed every year depending on who won the Super Bowl? These people are pathetic. Pick a character that’s suits you, a character that draws you to itself, and then get to grinding, learn the tricks of the trade and so on. The band-wagoners always forget it’s more about the player than the actual character.

  1. LowTiers in todays games are still playable instead of being 1-9 against everyone. The better player wins even if he picks a weaker character.
  2. LowTiers tend to be rarely played (unless like umm, lowtier Ryu) so you can make up for characters weaknesses by having opponents not know the matchup well
  3. You’re usually going to have better results with a supposedly ‘weak’ character which clicks than by picking some kind of TopTier. See eg JWong dabbling with Yun/Yang, then going back to Rufus in AE.

No

and

Rose, 2nd: Gouken, Seth
are widely accepted as competitive characters. I would argue that Seth is the best character in SSF4:AE 2012

Nothing wrong with sticking with low-tier characters. Unless you’re playing top-level players, most tier lists won’t factor perfectly into your tournament matches. I’d rather you play a low-tier character that you know how to use, and enjoy playing, and will continue to improve with that character, as opposed to whoring it up with high-tier characters that you have no passion for. But realize that it will take a lot more work and perfect execution and strategies from you in order to win some of your tougher matchups, but it is definitely possible. It’s always much more impressing watching a player pick a low-tier character and doing well with them, as opposed to guys who just pick a top tier.

And Rose, Gouken, and Seth, are all VERY viable in a competitive scene. Hakan…not so much, since he does have trouble getting zoned out and out-poked by a majority of the cast.

only in a few games can you actually play low-tiers and win big tournaments. I think the only 2 games that come to my mind are Vampire Savior and VF4:EVO. In the VF world, there is a player called Chibita and even though he played one of the worst character in VF4, he was one of the best players for the game.

Some games are balanced but most aren’t. If you want to win in most games, you always have to pick from the top\high mid tier group every time to do well in tournaments.

If you want to play low tiers and do well in tournaments, play balanced games. Otherwise its just going to be a shit storm of problems and you’ll asking yourself why the fuck do they make bad characters on purpose.

Depends, do you want to win? If you are truly trying your best to win, then you shouldn’t play low tier characters. Playing low tier characters doesn’t make you cool or anything, WINNING with them does, and you’ll have to come to terms with the fact that they simply cannot compete vs a lot of the cast even if you play very well. Although the better (usually) player wins, you are only putting yourself at a disadvantage.

i mean it’s possible…

it all depends on the game you’re playing. Some games allow low tiers to compete, others don’t.

Low tiers for MOST Capcom games usually means they’re so shitty they can’t compete but in other games like VS, it simply means that the character doesn’t have as many tools but they’re still really good

over the last 5 big vsav tournaments in Japan that happen once a year, there has been a low tier in the top 3 or has won the biggest tournament available. Now, you can play low tiers in those games and as long as you put in work, you will do really well. Same with Chibita in VF4:EVO, lion was the shittiest character in the game I think, can’t remember, and chibita just raped fucking everyone iirc or @ least won a lot. He played the worst character in his game and was able to beat top tier competition steadily.

some games allow low tiers to compete and win, others don’t. You just have to understand what game you’re playing and whether or not its balanced from top to bottom.

I encourage everyone to try to play a balanced game very hard for @ least 1 year and look @ how fun those games are. Its something you can’t get in a Capcom game these days.

Yes. Yes you are.

Since when did Vampire Savior stop being a Capcom game? :U

  1. kuroda never gave up playing Q, infact he still plays Q. bare in mind he also plays everyone else except Chun and Yang, but that doesn’t mean he ever gave up Q. Q has terrible matchups but he won a few SBOs *with *Q against those losing matchups.

  2. yes, but that applies to tier charts, not competitive play. seth beats pretty much every character in SF4 - how many seth players are there that win majors? 2. one of those being Poongko who has almost (if not has) maxed out the characters potential in someone’s hands. and people still beat him with characters that, on paper, wouldn’t beat Seth. because as many options as a character has at any given moment, you won’t see everyone picking the right option every time. that’s where reads come into play, and that’s where player potential overcomes on-paper-matchups. kuroda being the prime example of this - beating Chuns and Yuns (Q’s 2 hardest matchups) numerous times in numerous majors.

there *are *matchups that defy this rule, however. T Hawk - Blanka is a good example, but thats simply because the matchup is HEAVILY in favor of Blanka. youre simply not winning that match if the Blanka knows anything about the game.

but, to my knowledge, no one has t hawk - blanka matchups across the board. in 3S a character like that existed and his name was Sean - but there are very significant reasons why nobody is winning with Sean, and no one in SF4 shares those issues. oh, and even then, a Sean did beat a Yun once.

but yeah you’re literally never going to find 50/50 player skill matches. one is always going to be superior to the other, and one is always going to win with that superiority. some characters have better matchups than others, but that doesn’t mean you can’t play the character you like playing most simply because he/she has losing matchups.

like i said. look at kuroda. ~get good~

A good game? IT CAN’T BE FROM CAPCOM!!! #DansGame

Whoever was holding that camera must have some kind of degenerative muscle disease that makes them not hold a camera straight for longer than a minute.
just saying.

You can play golf with a tree branch, and I’m sure there are people out there who do just fine with one, but most people benefit from a good quality club.

Play with the characters u like. I think most people who watch tournaments anyway like to see when low tier characters get picked because it makes for an interesting match. Most low tier characters are unknown to the players that play high tier, so it makes for a good show. Especially if you win lol. For example I forgot what tournament it was but there was a player named ageojoe (not sure if thats how its spelled) and he won the UMvC3 tournament with Viewtiful Joe/Rocket Raccon/Frank West (I think this was the team.) and this was probably my favorite matches I’ve watched cuz he was owning everyone with this odd team.

First, you play way too many characters to be considered decent with any of them. Pick one and get them down pat. Next you’re not screwed, you just have to work harder. If you use tiers as an excuse for why you lost then you will be a scrub, so dont ever do it.

Mah 2 cents.

I dunno I think Sanford is doing pretty all right. Imo calling people “dick riders” and “band waggoners” cause they want to play a strong character is pretty obnoxious too. People pick characters for a bunch of different reasons and there ain’t anything inherently wrong with picking a character because they are strong. It’s these kind of rants that get people to not pick a character specifically cause they are top tier.

Tiers are not good basis for picking characters, If you can perform good with any of them, you’re legit

FOPO. Fuck Other Peoples Opinions. Play who you want and have fun with it. Invest enough time and effort into any character and you can make them top tier in your hands.
