I suck at throwing

So i consider myself a novice/intermediate player, and i can function pretty well a few different characters. (I only have about 50:50, on the remix scoreboard but considering the amount of disconnects and laggers i have played against i would consider myself having a net-positive ratio.) However, i hate SF2 style throws, and i suck at them. I think i hate them because i suck at them, and i probably suck at the because i hate them too. lol. – I much prefer SF3/SF4 style throws.

However, i like HD remix and i feel like one of the biggest things standing in my way from becoming a better player is throws… (that and reversal timing while playing online)

When i want to throw somebody, i get a normal. Occasionally i get an accidental throw when i dont want one at all. And if i play against someone who is great at throws its very very challenging for me, and i have to play very strategically…

I know how important throws are to SF2 gameplay, but i just have a very hard time getting throws when i want them and avoiding throws when i dont want them. Now, when i play third strike on GGPO im much better at throws - So i think a lot of it has to do with the style of inputs for throws in SF2.

Can anyone give me some tips on how to control throws a little better? When should i use them and when should i predict that my opponent will be using them?

Thanks all.

Just make sure that when you want a throw you hold a direction (left or right) while pressing your character’s throw button. Also, different characters have different throw buttons. Some throw with all of forward, roundhouse, strong, and fierce, some throw with strong and fierce only, and Blanka only throws with fierce, so learn what your character’s throw buttons are. Having a hard time doing a reversal throw I understand, but you shouldn’t be messing up the throw motion in the first place.

The way you avoid throws when you don’t want them is to not hold left or right when doing whatever button you want to be a normal instead of a throw.

(1) Obtain a controller with a turbo switch.

(2) Turn on the turbo switch.

(3) Walk into your opponent, hold the stick in the direction you wish to throw him, and hold down strong (sorry, MP).

Take a look at the throw ranges described here: http://nki.combovideos.com/data.html

When you want to throw, make sure to use direction input. When you don’t want to throw, keep the stick in a direction that will not invoke a throw, or neutral.

I usually press the relevant throw button twice in quick succession. If you get thrown instead, chances are you will tech.

Hope that helps,

Edited to say: this advice is for super turbo, but hopefully is still relevant.

Learn your character’s throw range. Blanka has half screen throw range so I’m always able to throw no matter what.

“Blanka has half screen throw range so I’m always able to throw no matter what.”

I would have thought that Dhalsim would be able to counter Blanka’s bite with his fierce throw every time, but yesterday I kept getting stuck with jumping mk into bite. I would block, expect the bite, try to counter, but get bitten every time. Any advice on how to successfully counter?

Most tick bites aren’t from the max range of the bite. Just work on throw timing.
