I need help With kof in general

I’m trying to do 98 and 02. Thing is this game is unpopular as mess in the usa- basically it is dominated by mexican and chinese players on ggpo… No local play. And I don’t really know the strategy or anything, I’ve seen dandy j’s vids, but that only gives you a vague idea, when I watch the mexican players or whoever I’m playing, I can see their brains working around it. All I know is that I need to know normals, especially the good extended ones with less ending animation for shorthops and I need to keep pressure on. I’m used to sf so this is wierd… Should I sh all the time or stay on the ground? So used to a ground game… And it’s still unsafe to jump. The most kof normal/strat knowledge I got was from dandy’s info on kyo and iori. I need like a teacher or something. Of course the hard way is always there, spending virtual quarters and learning all through experience.
I’m on Orochinagi… But I’m not British/European and their events happen in Europe. A place I can’t afford to go to all the time.
And seriously what the efffffff is up with the USA and KOF? ALmost nobody plays it! And why is it so darn popular in china and latin speaking countires… MAME machines? National pasttime? What is it?
Also why is it… Like never at Evo… Ever. There needs to be some more non-Capcom up in there. Tekken is treated like a side show imo. Un-hype Golf-game announcers and crowd, small turnout.

what capcom games do you play? i can draw some analogues for you.

IDK if that would help…
SF2 series,3rd Strike, Marvel for capcom fighters. KOF 2000 is a lot like marvel.
I play KOF XI and I think I’m ok at it, but again, nobody to really face playing it.

It seems to be the most similar to something like vamp savior really.

I play 2002 and 2002UM, not an expert at either but fairly competent at 2002 on GGPO. They’re very different beasts from Street Fighter. Movement, air and rushdowns are a lot more complex and faster paced than in Street Fighter, with air in particular being a much bigger part of the game. Aside from basic combos, learning how to recover, roll, short hop, super jump, super hop and guard break are all top priorities. In order to be competitive these things have to be second nature to you and performed without hesitation when appropriate. Positioning is as important in KoF as any fighter, but KoF takes it a step above most by having so many ways to maneuver, like the methods listed above or using character specials (many of which have “teleports” or various other gap closers).

There are a few little tricks and techniques I could go into but I have no idea how new you are to the game or what characters you play. What are you interested in learning in particular? Are you familiar with the power stock system? The EX system? Let me know.

We have wikis, online events and some very willing teachers at http://dreamcancel.com.

You’re in NC, right?
Hit me up.

Though regarding the topic, it would be a lot more helpful if you stated more specifically what characters you’re trying to learn and in what specific games.

Yeah I just picked up KoF2002UM recently and help would definitely be appreciated. So far I’m mostly working on Joe/Mature/Athena. However, I’m also experimenting a bit with Angel, Iori, Vanessa, and Vice.

Join #snkplaymore on EFNET and ask for some matches…

I’m usually willing to play there, I could give you a good idea of what you should be doing. And research lots of match videos…not necessarily from GGPO but from the arcades, preferably asian matches.

Put 2 and 2 together and you just gave yourself your answer. That wasn’t so hard was it?

It is actually played in the bring your own console area though.

Anyway, do what Emil said, yes the USA scene is small but there is actually a fair amount of people playing on the #SNKPlaymore irc channel. I’m there, and I can get games in every day and they’re all very helpful.

(#SNKPlaymore @ EFnet - The home of SNK on IRC!)

“It is actually played in the bring your own console area though.”

I was there last year and played a good amount of KOF in the BYOC area. I’ll be going with friends this year though and we’ll be sure to put up our own set ups rather than waiting for others to do so. Feel free to come along, learn, and play. I too am often in #SNKPlaymore but recent I’ve been caught up with Hot Shots Golf Out of Bounds and trying to get back into a good workout regimen. If anyone catches me in the channel or on GGPO, go ahead and ask for games as I don’t mind at all and welcome it.

byoc area… what…
look from what i know people play that game in southern california and new mexico and that’s it.

what is the byoc area? I know geographic regions of the us, not forum slang for them.

Brying Your Own Console area

You still haven’t logged onto the IRC channel. You really should if you want to have some tutoring. I’d gladly do it, and so will Emil.

I know what it means from context.
In terms of a geographic location there is no such thing that I know of that is called that. Please explain what that is.

It’s not a geographic denotation though. It describes an allocated area of a tournament where casual play takes place with provided television sets, but the consoles are not provided hence Bring Your Own Controller/Console. Tournaments could be held anywhere regardless of geographic location given a few limitations, and within the tournament venue a BYOC area could be provided. Last year I played in the BYOC area at the Evo tournament being held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
