don’t use an lcd, it’ll look pretty shitty. I’m sure you can find a cheap CRT in vegas or borrow someones CRT at EVO. crt is the way to go. looks good and doesn’t lag. I remember reading in the CvS2 thread that they are hosting CvS2 so you won’t have to worry really.
BYOC is all CRTs at evo - unless there’s been a change, you don’t need to worry about hooking a ps2 to an ASUS monitor.
You give it a 480i signal it displays 480i on the top of the screen.
Give it a 480p, thats what it says
Same with 720p, 1080i.
Basically its a direct component connection through the multi-av port in the back of the PS2 and PS3. Doesn’t work with PS1 through since PS1 didn’t support component out. Also for some reason won’t accept PS1 games in a PS2.
But its seemingly lagless, however due to how its setup you can’t really perform an accurate test on it (closest would be RB2 but that is far from accurate). Has good picture, good sound, and very portable. What it actually shows I don’t know since off hand I don’t know its native resolution. Probably 720p.
I’m very happy with mine.
Also have the framemeister but haven’t really played with it yet. And probably not lugging a $600 framemeister after all the trouble I had in importing it. Especially with TSA
Thats not how lcd/plasma works. Its just telling you the input rez, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t deinterlacing and scaling the image (if it wasnt, it would be a tiny ass image in the middle of the screen, because it wouldn’t be scaled). It also sounds like it doesn’t support 240p either.
Recent testing (albeit with less than optimal side by side testing w/ the genesis / dreamcast 240p testing suite) suggests a somewhat larger number than 1.5ms - possibly between 1 and 2 frames.
Which I covered when I talked about its native resolution. I’m not sure if it takes 240p, probably not, might interpret it as 480i like some TVs do. Though for the use of the TS, CvS2 would be 480i so it still would work for his uses.
According to Fudoh on shmups.system11.org
"Did some testing of the processing lags of various processors incl. the Mini. The Mini was tested with 480p output to a HDFury to a Sony PGM CRT monitor. Source was a Sega Nomad with Artemio’s 240p test suite. The stock display of the Nomad lags with a little less than 8ms (tested against a 15khz CRT).
The results were 32ms with V-Sync off and 24ms with V-Sync on.
I would appreciate if some more people did a simple lag test, e.g. by splitting the signal before the Mini and testing a 15khz CRT against a LCD with a know input lag."
But that depends on many things, what settings he had it on (scanlines, processing mode, odd sync coming in), so something more standard might do better (with less bells and whistles), or possibly worse.
More testing
this, if you can find one
Having a lower resolution doesn’t guarantee the lcd is going to be lag free - you’re still going to be deinterlacing a 480i image from the ps2
As others have said: CRT. Problem solved. Component/S-Video cables should still be easy to find these days, being as the PS3 still uses the same style A/V port as the PS2. I’ve picked up some beautiful 25" Sony Vegas for $50 or less, but the key is getting one that is shaped such that you can carry it by yourself (not all are designed for 1 person to carry). As rtdesign mentioned, 20" is a nice size, both for viewing and for portability.
Also see if you can get someone to snag you a BYOC spot, if EVO is actually supplying CRT’s. Would save you the hassle of bringing your own, but it might still be good to have a backup in the car in the event all the BYOC spots are taken (not sure how likely that is). Hope you have a great side-tourney @ EVO!

dreamcast cvs2 is native 480p and evo monitor is 1080p so expect lag.
ps and dreamcast version of cvs2 wont be lag free on ANY lcd monitor. just get a crt from local craigslist. you can even find free crt monitors. and I am sure there will be random crts at EVO anyway. and people will be hosting cvs2 side tourneys too.
so ssf4 ps3 lags on evo monitor cause its 720p?
yes
its not noticeable because ps3 can still output 1080p. it was designed to run games at that resolution. dreamcast was never meant to be played on any lcd. and forget about ps2 version of cvs2…that shit isnt even vga/480p. even with transcoder/vga box expect lag.
I dunno if this was answered earlier but what exactly is the monitor they are using at evo2k12 if anyone knows. Thanks in advance.
PS3 doesn’t upscale though.
ASUS VH236H - 8.3ms input lag
Best, worst, mean, or median?
There are are quite a few monitors with less lag its still under a frame though
TAlk about a necro, but wouldnt Dreamcast with VGA on a EVo monitor work

Not cool to Necro old threads.
Also which Evo monitor? Asus no longer has the Evo license
Ben Q now makes the new Evo monitor.
Ether way everything that need to be said was said in this thread.
Monitor input lag measurements don’t usually involve taking a 480p signal. Though it’s not nearly as bad as the case of 480i, I hear upscaling from 480p isn’t painless.
