My “general” method of zoning with Hawkeye is j. :h:, j. :qcf: :l:, st. :h:, :dp: :h:. In order to keep pressure on your opponent through arrows, you want to keep yourself at a frame advantage by using moves with little recovery. IMO, try to stay away from using st. :qcf: :l: because its -14 on block, -13 on HIT, and it whiffs on a lot of small characters. I’ve stopped using the standing version altogether outside of XF cancels/combos, and instead use :qcb: , :h:, his forward roll into heavy trick shot. It hits all small characters, is his fastest moving projectile I believe, and causes heavy chip/guardstun, and most importantly, is 0 or +1 or 3 on hit/block. Hawkeye’s jumping triple arrow recovers fast because it lasts until he lands and covers the normal jump area. The st. :h: is to keep them honest, or to stop forward movement, and the triple piercing is to cover the sky if they try to super jump afterwards. Also, if they get hit/block the triple piercing, that gives you enough time to repeat the whole thing. Works really well against big characters, especially Doom: since he relies on air dashes for movement since his ground dash sucks, he has a lot of trouble getting past it. This is nowhere near perfect, so always keep a sharp eye. Teleports/wavedashing does get through sometimes, so have Gimlet/SSS ready to push them back.
so you shouldn’t use triple arrow on the ground? What about Piercing Shot? (qcf.H)
I had no idea grounded triple arrows were a bad idea, but now that you mention it, it does make sense. I barely used them anyway since my opponents loved wolverine and he ducked them but I never thought it would be an all around bad idea. The more you know.
Piercing Bolt is much more useful because of its projectile-destroying abilities and better chip. Though it can be crouched under and is just as bad as Triple Arrow in terms of frame disadvantage.
I think Rusty Nail after Trick Maneuver M seems to be the best way to go.
I take it Scatter Shot is worse than Triple Piercing then.
Scatter Shot doesn’t cover nearly as much aerial space as Triple Piercing iirc. But SS does have the upside of causing a soft knockdown, so in the event that if you clip someone with it, with fast reactions you can slide launcher into a combo.
I always thought that scatter shot was to lock the opponent down from across the screen, while triple piercing are for super jumpers coming in. This is some great advice on how to optimize Hawks zoning, keep it coming! While we are at it what do you guys think of Hawks SS assist vs his triple shot assist. I’m starting to use it more and more with Taskmaster and because it causes a soft knockdown I can call the assist and dash/spider swing and use it to hit confirm into an easy combo.
Please, dear god, does anyone know what Hawkeye says when he dies? I literally cannot make it out.
Sounds like he says ESS PEE VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
But then, I am terrible at hearing things in this game. I don’t hear Skrull say Inferno, to me it sounds like he says “INCREDIBLE”, and he used to say “He looks” in Vanilla.
I might be going mad, but Hawkeye’s shout is driving me insane. What does he say? SRK search sucked.
I think he is worried about his teammates intake of protein and as such yells out “THEY NEED MEAAAAAAT!!!”. Hawkeye is such a team player.
If you already have a strong horizontal assist on your team I can see it providing some interesting uses, but its main issue is its attached to the character who also has greyhound, the other assist is so good if your playing hawk you actually need a reason not to run it imo. Couple that with a number of disadvantages the SS assist has (not tracking, not hitting in the corner, the dead space directly in front of the point character) and you really need another good horizontal assist on your team to justify not picking it. imo of course, game is still young and we might find some crazy uses for it down the line.
That’s the thing, I already have tatsu, that’s why I find myself running it. The only benefit I see is that it(greyhound)helps extend combos for Taskmaster, which Tatsu also does for me. I also find that I can extend Tasks combos in the corner, especially after sting master, with the SS assist but it’s not 100% consistent. Ive been going back and forward between the two assists and can’t seem to stick with one assist. I also like how it(SS) takes the air away from your opponent if used right, which is Taskmasters biggest weakness in my opinion, opponents who like to attack from the air.
OMG! Super Scattorshot is soooooo good! gushes
Gimlet is good for reaction, and surprises, but i think Scattorshot is the more versatile super. It OTGs well, covers such a wide area, and carries opponents away from you even if its blocked so one can resume zoning. With OTG gimlet you’re doing the damage but they’re still close by, and the threat of getting in is there. With OTG Scattorshot you’re damaging AND carrying them back across the screen in the process!
Too good
Plus Mindgamezz!! Maybe i’m being ballsy but there are plenty of times when someone is coming after me and i’ll just do the super and…just stand there. Daring them to get me. If they try anything thinking they’ll have time to attack, they get hit. Works lol. Some also might be under the impression that if they hit me it’ll stop the rain…nope!
Also Gimlet is basically an invisible straight-line projectile that can be negated. Such as by Arthur Goddess braclet, sentinal force super, or Doom laser fingers super. There are some situations where only scattorshot can hit.
Another thing is if you’re unsure of the situation, then throwing out a gimlet may just result in them blocking and you wasting a super. When in doubt, Scattorshot always the best choice.
Hey does anyone have good videos of high level hawkeye play? Or just someone playing him? He’s definitely my worst character and I could do with some footage of how other people play him to improve my game.
This is all I could find, http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=_2kLm8pTJwQ&NR=1 there isn’t a lot of hawkeye footage unfortunately since almost everyone plays him on anchor.
Another great thing about Super scattorshot is if it hits, and you have another meter, you can hit them with a gimlet right after the last hit of scattorshot. Or a triple piercing if you don’t have meter, or BOTH lol.
Usually after i do this i’ll throw out a triple piercing, and if they’re not expecting it, it’ll hit them right afterwards. Killed quite a few characters with my Super Scattorshot+XFC+gimlet+triple piercing combo.
My point Hawkeye is pretty decent/good.
Been zoning with Hawkeye/Doom missiles recently. Most often results in 17 win streaks in ranked matches and wins at local tourneys. BYAHHHHH!
Ok, so I attended a small 8-man tournament today and while I feel my performance was absolutely lacking when comparing to how I play regularly (them tournament nerves, man), I still want you guys to comment on my matches if you can bear through the portuguese resets and overall fairly weak level. http://www.twitch.tv/garudapsn/b/322421505 my first match is at 0:12:20 (ignore the names and results, they were a bit slow with uploading those, I’m “Blue”, first player.) and my second one is at 1:11:00 (I’m the guy in the blue shirt, but not that you care). I realise some of the MAJOR fuck-ups that I did, especially in my second match. Hilariously failed a Hawkeye air magic series and then the otg to kill wesker (I swear I don’t know how that happened, I have to work on my nerves) and then on the final match, that absolutely desperation tactic of an anti-air hyper with Frank when I could have simply punished the teleport. But hey, further feedback on my (admittedly limited) Hawkeye play is welcome, just please don’t cringe too much at the failures thanks!
So regarding various arrow tactics:
Speed shot is the best ground-to-ground arrow by far. Super fast, shuts beam characters down COLD, pierces and hits assists, pushes the opponent back a good distance, and (because of the forward roll) moves the playfield away from your corner a bit. The only things to worry about from ground opponents are a) gold Arthur b) Chris Magnum c) anti-projectile moves (Charging Star, Bionic Arm, etc). Beam supers are not as much of a problem as you might think; speed shot is so fast that the opponent has to use some serious random super timing or they are easily baited.
Grounded triple arrow is not good. The best use for it is if you want to win a firefight but you don’t have time for speed shot or piercing bolt; you can do H -> triple arrow and get 12 durability out there very fast.
Piercing bolt is OK, but I don’t like it on the ground; I prefer doing a late air piercing bolt to swallow up attempts to firefight jumping triple arrow. The best use for grounded piercing bolt is in frame traps, where the opponent expects an H or a speed shot and wants to pushblock.
All of the DP arrows are best for air D (obviously) but they have different weaknesses. Triple piercing is usually the best option if you correctly time a jump, but if the opponent doesn’t jump (and you don’t have an assist covering your front) they can dash in and hurt you. On the flip side, triple piercing has the best arc for interrupting random beam supers, so you can feel a bit safer about calling that assist in front of you. There is a blind spot above and slightly in front that divekickers and 8-way-airdashers can exploit. This move shuts down Meteor Smash at virtually every range and location, so against the one-dimensional random smash Skrulls, spam this move and enjoy a cold adult beverage.
Scattershot recovers slightly earlier than triple piercing and is basically its meta-complement; the opponent has to commit really early to dash under H -> scatter and is begging to be frame trapped with piercing bolt or speed shot. However, scattershot doesn’t have the space control of triple piercing and is really only good against characters with no air movement or air projectiles. Scattershot does a decent job of covering triple piercing’s blind spot but if they get there, you probably want to burn a gimlet or super scatter because you stand a fair chance of dying, depending on character. If you have a sharp eye, you can hitconfirm ground-to-air scattershot into combo, but I’m not too great at it myself.
Exploding arrow is good against fliers who like to hang out above your head. When an opponent gets into the scary zone (a little outside of sweep range), you can toss out exploding -> gimlet if you’re scared of them punishing super scatter, then jump back and do triple arrow/piercing bolt/j.S depending on their next move.
Net arrow is arguably the best frametrap weapon, but as I play most of my games on xbox live (and I can’t do the net loop reliably online), I have not worked that into a solid part of my game.
I feel like such a scrub when using him.
I know you can use St. H and cancel into whichever arrow you want, but when should I be using what arrow? I just seem to throw them all out in order. Triple Arrows, Net Arrow, Piercing Bolt, then the DP ones. How about his Trick Shots? When should I be using those?
I have the tendencies to use his Trick Shot~Ice a lot too to fish for a hit. I also tend to using St. M into Launcher despite if I get hit or not. What should I be doing to fish for a hit? When should I be using his slide?
I always seem to be UP BACKING and H/S a lot if they get close. I guess it’s a panic mode, but I should just be blocking and punishing where I see fit right?
Does Hawkeye have any mix-ups? He seems to lack a comeback mechanic without XF. Which makes me sort of sad.
Any other tips are appreciated.
Im sorry but did you skip the massive post about his different arrows directly above yours? I mean c’mon man are you even trying to get better?
Depends if you’re playing Hawkeye solo or with assists. SOLO, you want to avoid Triple Arrows/Piercing Bolt, since they leave you with bad frame advantage. In XF3, doing H+Net arrow repeatedly is sort of a frame trap, but w/o XF, not so much. You want to use is forward roll trick shot’s for horizontal coverage, since they are a lot less negative on block. WITH ASSISTS, the case is different. You can use his Triple/Piercing/Net arrow in tandem with missiles/arrows/ whatever implements his keepaway because although they are negative on block, their Hit/Blockstun lasts a lot longer than his trick shot options, other than Ice shot I think, but that’s negative on block also.
Ice Shot isn’t that great outside of incoming mixups where you can do exploding arrow, then Trick Maneuver H into crossup Ice shot, which keeps you safe whether they block it or not. St.M you can cancel into slide, which gives you more time to confirm or not. Upbacking, yeah that’s kinda panic mode lol. I know that I naturally jump back too much sometimes, but that’s a habit to get rid of. When its Hawkeye by himself vs wesker or doom or magneto or Galactus (not really) etc, its all footsies/air grabs, except you have arrows and don’t have to go in as much as he does. Just play a patient game and save meter only for lvl 3’s or punish/killing Gimlets, not at the end of a combo that won’t kill because even Gimlet on hit is -8, unless they’re close to the ground where they would tech roll, but even then, they get to roll first lol.
I didn’t skip it. It’s all very useful information. I was copy and pasting this from another forum and was in a rush and didn’t really edit it. Sorry for that! No harm intended.
I’m running him on Anchor. But I might not have XFactor as I run Wolverine as well, and if I get a throw early in the match, I might burn it for the kill. Which seems to be a real problem because Anchor Hawkeye without XFactor seems really weak. Besides being patient and such, is there anything else I should be doing with Hawkeye without XF, because even if I do get a throw, the damage he gets off it is laughable. Also I don’t feel like I didn’t really win if I won with XF Hawkeye…because it seems so cheap.
When I do St. M and cancel into a Slide, which Trick Maneuvers~Arrows should I be cancelling into if they block?
Does Hawkeye have any resets? It doesn’t seem like he does…
What are the consensus on his 6M (I think it was)? The spark bolt he throws. Does it have any practical uses.
