I love my dog who chews wires

so i have a fairly simple problem (i think) but i am fairly uneducated so im just being cautious. i bought a Madcatz Tournament Edition Round 2 fighter stick which i have been very happy with (my first one). it is for the PS3, and my lovely puppy Tyson told me i dont pay enough attention to him and he chewed the USB wire…

i am sorry if this thread is on the wrong spot

i tried looking online for the arcade stick parts sellers that were posted on here but it seems most of those are for replacing buttons and boards and more complicated things. im not sure the fact its a usb for the ps3 is an important factor or not so i dont want to buy any usb cord. i was wondering if anyone knew where i could get the right cord that works with this controller if it needs to be specific.

so i guess bottom line, my round 2 stick has a broken usb to the ps3 port and i need to replace it. can anyone point me in the right direction? much thanks for giving me some of your time.

Can you post a picture? I have never seen the insides of a USB cord but I assume its split into a few different wires with a few different colors. Although I’ve never tried this, I assume you can just clean up the wires, solder corresponding colors back together, wrap them in electrical tape, and finally cover them all in electrical tape. You should make sure that you have the right wires connecting to each other and that there are no shorts (different wires touching each other).

Found this: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/usb4.htm I think you can do what I mentioned above.

^ Thats what I would do.

If you are skilled and patient enough, you can cut each wire to length so that they won’t short each other when they are taped up, but I just tape each connection individually, and wrap the whole package tightly with a generous amount of electrical tape.

There are 4 wires in standard USB cable, you can take almost any cable and you’ll find the same four colors

black, white, red and green.

Ground, VCC, D+ and D- respectively (I think)

It it would be much easier to cannibalize an unused USB cord and connect the coloured wires together. It’s rather straight forward and any USB cord should work I think. You could get a computer USB extension cable and use that, it’s rather inexpensive.

did he ruin the usb head, or did he just chew through the middle of the cable?

If he just chewed through the cable, just reuse the cable. Reconnect all the points, solder it together, and wrap it all up in electrical tape.

hey guys, thanks for all the responses. the wires inside the main wire do look exactly like toggleme’s link shows. my dog chewed only through a section of the wire and not the USB head, so i did as you guys suggested and i cut open the big black outer wire some more to see whats up. basically the green red and black wires inside had their casing broken and i think the metal pieces were touching each other causing the controller to mess up. so i wrapped each one with electrical tape since none of the wires were physically broken, and then wrapped the whole group together with more electrical tape. controller seems to work good as new haha.

i think i may get another USB cord just incase this one goes out due to wear and tear. i was just confused at first because inside the wire is the 4 wires but there were five wires that connect to the main board inside the controller, 2 blacks were present. i guess the shield turned into the other black cable sometime along the line?

That is correct. The shield ground helps with blocking the interference to things like your antennae or radio reception.

oh those darn dogs! that’s what humans get for not playing with them! when my dog was a puppy, he chewed up my ps3 analogs off, the plug for the wii nunchuck, my little brother’s phone charger and Nintendo DS charger. He had a bone and chew toy…but i guess he was more interested in electronics and video game stuff. Good times, still love that little bastard though, he’s grown now and doesn’t do that kinda stuff anymore.
