I can't control it! - The Phoenix Thread

Gamma wave/magnetic shockwave/morrigan’s AA super/Thor shockwave should all do it. They all carry across the screen.

Phoenix can get in on the opponent without use of meter, assists, or relying on opponent mistakes, through the use of homing fireballs and teleport. DPh can do it even better.

Jean is the only character who can do this. Get in for the rush down all by herself almost any time, off of a super jump no less.

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but who else can do that? Not Wesker or Dante.
Not even Strider. While his slow, ground only projectile can get him in, I wouldn’t exactly call that a reliable method to get in on a decent player. He still needs more than that.

I honestly think maybe 7 characters on this roster will ever stand a chance of touching her at all, beyond a possible one time KFC out of blockstun from the rest of the cast.
Paper health won’t matter if you can’t touch her.

But I don’t want to go too deep into the theory, we’ll just see when the game drops :stuck_out_tongue:
I’ve got faith that Capcom knows exactly what they are doing giving her such terrible health.

Is it Monday yet? x.x

Wesker’s pistol shot teleport should get him in by himself. Ground or AtG.

Huh, well color me a fool then. Can’t wait til the game drops so I can stop making myself look foolish by speaking too soon.

Wesker’s pistol shot is great for adding pressure, but I don’t think it will cover his advance as well as a TK shot does considering it’s way too fast.

Yeah but it puts them in blockstun/hitstun for you to safely teleport.

I wouldn’t consider this covering himself so much as being able to combo off his gunfire. Covering to me means that you have a period where you and the projectile exist independently, and Wesker doesn’t offer that.

Hyper Photon Array is not his only hyper; his air bullet (I don’t know the name) certainly meets our requirements. You can combo into HPA while remaining out of HF’s range.

She can combo it off of her bead projectiles, her bead normals (which reach 3/4ths screen), power slash, etc. It also comes out instantly, so it can punish pretty much anything Phoenix does that does

I think she will end up a great character - don’t lump me with the people that think she’s free. I just don’t think Healing Field will be useful pre-Dark Phoenix. I would love to use Phoenix, but she does not mesh well with my main (Dormammu). I’m not really developing “Phoenix Busters”; I run theoryfighter for my team against every existing character to ensure it has no blaring weaknesses. Phoenix is just another character to me, and one that is actually pretty easy for Dormammu to handle (Stalking Flare XFC Stalking Flare = dead).

Feel free to go through the rest of the list later - I’ll be here.

Not if she also has X-Factor, which she should, which will nullify your chipping plan Karst. As a Phoenix player, saving XF for DPh, if you’re going that route seems the best idea.

Or a simple well timed super jump, air dash, teleport could completely avoid it.

I think it’s possible Phoenix could do alright on point and with healing field, but you’d be completely sacrificing DPh to do that basically.

From what I hear, getting hit while in a utility hyper state slows the timer down, which if true and applies to her shield will help her out.

She does build meter while her shield is up. And with her mix of offensive rushdown and annoying runaway, could possibly build up enough meter to have her shield on constantly. Though the matchup would make a world of a difference. If your opponent is adept at dealing long range damage, then it wouldn’t be feasible to play that way.

I don’t think most Phoenix players will be saving X-Factor for her, as her damage is already through the roof. X-Factor is something everyone has - it’s not a unique Phoenix tool. This is still a hard counter to her character in general, and if my opponent could sit on 5 bars of meter, effectively be down a character, and never have to use X-Factor, I probably did not play a very good match.

Stalking Flare follows you until it hits. Running away from it just means Dormammu has more time to spam columns and such while you delay the inevitable. They will hit.

Unless you can hit Dorm, but even then I bet the KFC’d one would stay out.

Regardless of the semantics it gets him in.

Wouldn’t think of it, you clearly have a brain.

Did not know this. Very cool.

In any case, I am sure once the game is in people’s hands, people will be able to figure out “Phoenix Buster” combos with a lot of the cast. So everything will balance out, but I feel strongly that the flow of the meta game with her will be people using HF to make her really tough to kill and people setting up “Phoenix Busters” to take her out. “Phoenix Busters” will be something that at least one member of every team is capable of, and people running Phoenix are going to have to find ways to take those characters out of the picture so DPh can reign free.

This is all predicated on my possibly stupid idea about how red health works in this game and how HF takes advantage of it. Guess I’ll see in a week…

Does DPH life drain flat out kill her or does it leave her with a pixel of life left?

Oh well I’m still not sure how X-factor works on Dark Phoenix, as it hasn’t really been shown. If it stops the health drain or regenerates (maybe with level 3?). X-factor would at least stop the health drain for long enough to build meter for a shield, if necessary.

Capcom said they were gonna show her true potential. Still waiting, Capcom.

It will at least stop chip too. And since a team pretty much has to be built around her, giving her the extra oomph and survivability of XF theoretically seems to me to be the smartest plan.

I mean you’re already sacrificing damage to build 5 bars. You’re sacrificing a slot for a character with terrible health. You’re sacrificing a good assist.

She is your damage, and the harder she hits and longer she can survive, the better. It seems to me that X-factor for her will be essential.

She ought to be fun altho we gonna rage alot. Remind me of CvS2 Akuma or Strider.
I am also wondering how of Healing Fields effectiveness when being hit by a combo rather close range.

And yea X-Factor and Healing field for Health+damage her DPH looks sexy.

Only a week left. I watch stream and vids. I can’t play the game till like a month from now but that is another issue.

I have yet to see a video demonstrate that hitting Dormammu kills the Stalking Flare unless it’s during the startup animation.

It does negate it, just like sent drones assist if you hit them at any point it dissapates. I like putting her second, not to say banking on Dphx is a bad move but I just prefer using her since she’s fun to play. Right now team order is like, Tron/Phx/Sent

It seems to me like using Phoenix as an assist should never be a priority, dark or not. Seth has said that she has crappy assists and I doubt they’d become so much more useful as DPh that it would be worth the danger you’d be putting her in. The mindset I have for her is to not plan on having her around long, but making the most of the time you have. Set her second, keep her with at least 4 bars at all times and focus on doing as much damage as possible before she dies, does more damage and dies again. Whether or not to use a meter building assist is a tough decision, the meter would obviously mean a lot to her, but I don’t know if it’s worth leaving her with only one assist to actually help out on offense and defense.

Are you guys watching the MvC3 stream? Some dude is running Dorm/Doom/Phoenix.

Edit* he’s not running them anymore. But here’s the stream. MvC3 Stream on USTREAM: .

I’ve seen a number of interesting things.

  • Multiple slow TK shots during superjump. The slow ones track really well. Was going up against Morrigan and Morrigan jumped over it and tried to attack. The TK shot TURNED AROUND TO FOLLOW HER. And it didn’t do an entire turn either. It just followed and changed direction.

  • DPh transformation isn’t a 360 degree blast wave. More like 240. You can probably find a way to get her to transform and maybe move around her? It won’t be easy, but still… the transformation isn’t 360. Her back is exposed. I think the DPh transformation wave blasts from where the last damage hit came from and covers 240 degrees from that point.

  • In DPh, the fast TK shot has LIGHTNING speed. I mean… it’s so fucking fast it’s off the screen before you see it. It’s WOW fast. I honestly think you can stop Storm from doing a Hail Storm during its activation. It’s that stupid fast.

This has been THE INVINCIBLE SWORDSMAN saying:

Man… Dorm has got some crazy keep away stuff.

What’s the link to the stream?

I just posted the stream.
