I almost got into a car accident today. It's messing up my mind

Uh, no we’re not all terrible drivers. Remind me to stay the fuck away from you when I’m on the road tho.

Also you’re a dick for handing out that pathetic infraction on sensible advice.

That in itself should be a special achievement and earn points on SRK.

OP, don’t let that freak you out too much. that kind of situation will happen to you many more times during your driving career. HAV put it almost perfectly “scared drivers are the worst drivers on the road-” he only forgot to add cuntfuck drivers like yah yaahh b*tch! this dude made a thread begging for sympathy for something that was entirely his fault, and now he has the nerve to call the people that were criticizing his actions trolls. he’s changing his story to make himself look better. he WAS speeding and it had just started raining (the worst time to be on the road). even when people were calling him out on his driving he was acting like that shit wasn’t his fault. previously before that happened in other threads he was getting into arguments with safe drivers calling him out for driving like a epileptic. “just because i drive fast doesn’t mean i drive safe” fuck. you.

You may be ‘traumatized’ but you need to get your shit in order and realize that you were a problem for someone else too.

  • you misjudged the gap because you were impatient
  • you STOPPED in the middle of a turn against incoming traffic
  • and THEN you floored it thinking oh hey, I can make it after all.

What you are feeling is not trauma - it’s guilt. You could have been patient and waited but you didn’t. You could have committed to the turn but you didn’t do that either. Think how spooked the Ford was when this car tries to speed through a turn in front of them, it comes to a complete stop blocking the lane, and then it jets off again. You put yourself and others in a dangerous situation.

I know that accidents can happen and all but here’s the thing about that - people don’t take proper measures to prevent accidents from happening. Everyone seems to think that they can safely keep 1-inch margins between them and the car in front or speed through intersections or turns like it’s their right of way. These same idiots also seem to think that the immediate remedy to a hairy situation is to slam on the brakes or swerve without caring about their surroundings.

It sounds harsh but when your lack of safety concerns puts yourself and others at risk AND you don’t even realize it’s your fault - you get some real talk.

Think about how you got into this mess and don’t do it again. Recognize a bad situation and don’t get involved in it. Become a more confident and safer driver for yourself and everyone around you.

While “man up and get over it” may be apt advice, I think that makes more sense with an alternative interpretation of the phrase. Simply put… the only thing you can do is look at what happened and think about what you can do to improve from it. Get a little rest, then think on the situation.

Did you do anything that caused the problem and put yourself and/or others at risk? If so, what was it? Identify it. Figure out what you can do differently from here on to avoid it. In this case, “manning up” is looking at what happened, seeing what portion of the fault lies with you and your actions, and addressing it. Correct the mistake in your future driving. You’re behind a few tons of metal going at very high speeds, so is everyone else on the road. Edit: Therefore, it is your highest responsibility to know what you’re doing at all times.

You’re inevitably going to think about “what if? what could have happened if…?”, and there’s little to stop those initial thoughts. Just don’t let them consume you; the only good thing you can do in this situation is determine what happened and how you can prevent it from happening again in the future. Driving is a serious responsibility; if nobody got hurt in today’s incident then you got a free, no-liability, reminder of just how important it is to be fully alert while driving and regularly consider how you can improve how you handle your vehicle. Be thankful for that, study, improve, and move on; letting yourself drown in 'what if’s won’t do you any good. Get some sleep if you need it.

Driving is one area where you need to be bold. At times like the one you just described you gotta know when to take the opportunity and roll through it. Don’t ever, and I mean never… Stop in the middle of an intersection. Especially one that you entered in front of oncoming traffic. If you’re gonna go for it, make sure that you can make it. Make sure that there’s time to make it going a reasonable speed. Oncoming traffic does NOT have to slow down/yield for you. Don’t just JUMP out hoping to get across. Just because your car can accelerate quickly don’t mean that’s what you’re supposed to do. You could have gunned right into someone who was coming out of the parking lot you were trying to enter. And just think if that did happen… and the rear half of your car was STILL SITTING ACROSS THE INTERSECTION. You’d have a collision in the front AND the rear, causing damage to three (possibly more) cars and passengers.

It sounds like you’re an inexperienced driver, Not 100% sure, but it sounds like it. I suggest you drive more and make an active effort to be cautious until it becomes second nature. Take your time at intersections and be aware of each point in the intersection. Drive more. Confidence is really important. Over-confidence (what you tried to do going into that intersection) is deadly.

For what it’s worth… There are two locations in uncontrolled high-traffic intersections that I frequent and for those locations only, I just make a U-turn at the next controlled intersection past the turn in and come back to it so I can enter the parking lot safely without having to cross oncoming traffic. I also don’t have to WAIT. Two birds, one stone, and I get to keep living.

Oh, and by the way, you probably wouldn’t have died unless that guy was going hella fast. Paralysis, perhaps, but probably not death. The other guy probably would have been dead for sure.?

i got in an accident once, nbd. i was salty after losing a ranbat and thinking about what went wrong, and had to slam on my brakes cause someone in front of me had stoped suddenly. i made the stop in time, but the guy behind me didn’t and i got nailed and actually hit the guy in front of me too. sall good though no injuries. little jarring

but yeah i’ve had more near-misses than i’d like to acknowledge. happens

Okay Mr. Perfect Driver. Lol. You crack me up.

Serioulsy you didnt die and we have had all them near death experiences,

BUT 3 months ago I moved from Northern Nevada to Phoenix and on the way down my wife flipped/Rolled my 2005 lancer evo with my 2 kids in the back ( all were ok luckily ) and now my kids get all paranoid when they are on unstable driving ground but id expect that cuz they are 4 and 6 . You are an adult ( id hope ) so get over it.

I didn’t say i was a perfect driver. I said I wasn’t a bad driver. Big difference dumb ass.

Don’t think too much of it, dwelling on it will only debilitate your driving skills even further and will only make you a hazard on the road for your hesitation. Driving is a lot like fighters, hesitation will only be your undoing. Gotta move on as hard as it may seem presently.

STOP FUCKING PANICKING. I swear to GOD that 80% of accidents were made by some pansy who panicked. What LOGICAL reason did you have to stop the car? Did you want to get hit? If you make a decision, go with it, if you can’t do that, than stay off the road buddy. People like you can cause people like me to die.

Am I fucking reading this right? Move the fuck out because your dumbshit want to drive 90+ mph on the freeway?

Wow, fucking dumbest shit I had read in a while. dumber than the shit at 4chan

Like fuck a little faster is 30+ mph over the speed limit? LOFL

Reality check. You’re in a hurry and you hate it when someone is driving slower than you, especially if they are in front of you. Admit it. Same goes on the highway. If the speed limit is 70+. You’re going to put 10-20 over the speed limit. Especially if you’re going on a road trip.

Yeah, but if you’re gonna drive fast, you need to be a good enough driver to see the road in front of you, and traverse it. Driving faster than everyone else on the road, and just expecting traffic to part like the Red Sea is crazy.

LOL @ the whole “terrible driver” comment… really… some of us aren’t…

You don’t need to drive fast if the traffic is heavy. If it’s light as hell and/or it’s 1-4am /5am. By all means, go fast as you want and ensure you have good vision.

As for the terrible driver. It isn’t meant to be in a bad way. However, some people is taking it too seriously and getting offended by it. "OMFG…He called me a terrible driver…

BRB. It’s 2am and I feel like driving 90 MPH on I-75. Without headlights.

If I crash into you, it’s your fault for not seeing me and moving over.

Good Luck. =]

hey dumbshit, its called leaving 20 min early. I don’t speed on the highway 30+ mph like your dumb ass. The fastest I go is 75 mph, and that is when im alone and there isn’t any cars around me. Especially when I have people in the car and I’m driving, and the person driving me sure as fuck aint going to be speeding 30+ mph on the highway because im not going to let him.

I don’t rage because someone is driving the speed limit. Its called accountability and accepting its your fault because you where lazy to get of your ass and go 20 min early.

I don’t like it when people like you fuck with my lively hood, so why am i going to play with yours?

I got hit by a truck once while crossing the street on my way to school. Then I went to Physics and took a test.
