I have a hell of a hard time going through fireballs with hf balrog’s tap but I can do it no problem in regular hf. Does it have less invincible frames in ae or my timing is off due to the difference in speed?
what are sagat’s unblockables? how do the work?
TrueSephiroth is correct about the crouching HP to counter Ryu’s Hurricane kicks. You won’t have time for a flashkick after a Sonic Boom most of the time. If Ryu does does a “short” spin kick, make sure you catch it early (will hit everytime ) or you will be in deep trouble. You could lose the game if you timed it late because Ryu will be in deep position to give you a short kick, followed by fierce punch , fireball CPS1 chain combo leaving you Dizzy and pretty much at his mercy. If I knew I was late in my reaction, I would just jump away if the Ryu player was high level.
If Ryu does a HK Hurricane Kick, just wait for it to past you and hit his legs from behind while he is still in spin kick motion. You will hit him 99% of the time without trading. Most of the time, your reaction will be slow, so he will fly pass you anyways.
Here are key things I noticed about AE to confirm how different the key characters have changed from their original form.
If you played CE back in the days, you will notice that Ken And Ryu’s early jumping fierce stuffed Sagat’s tiger uppercut 9 out of 10 times… Sagat would only get a clean uppercut if it was VERY deep. Because of this, I never felt Sagat to be a threat in CE.
However. in AE… Sagat is a MONSTER. They made him waaaay too powerful. High damage, lightning quick recovery on tiger shots. Extremely fast tigers shots… so fast you can barely block let alone jump over. High damage combos. Lightning quick tiger knee. My close friend plays Sagat religiously and he’s probably just at good at Daigo’s Sagat, if not better. He tried ALL the Sagats in AE and I can consistently beat all of them with HF Ken and Ryu except for CE Sagat. CE Sagat is by far the best out of all of them. The only players I feel I have a strong and clear advantage on his CE Sagat are my ST Dhalsim and CE Bison.
O.Sagat is not as powerful of a character as he was in Super Turbo. He’s a waste of time in AE. Early when Daigo was playing Schaeffer on AE, I’m sure he was unfamiliar with the game and picked O.Sagat (prob thinking he was as powerful as the version in ST) and lost to Schaeffer’s average Guile game play. If he had picked CE Sagat, Im sure he wouldve murdered Schaeffer.
If you look at the recent SBO tournament videos in Japan, you will see that Daigo now uses CE Sagat… hmmmmmm I wonder why? CE Sagat is a major handicap. He takes waay too much blood.
Also…another thing in AE that I noticed that is not originally in hyper fighting is that Ken and Ryu have an UNBLOCKABLE Air hurricane kick if timed correctly. It works very well against Sagat. Try it out on any character.
Also…regarding tick throws. Reversals seem to done more effectively with the strong and forward button as opposed to the Fierce and Roundhouse button. The Fierce and roundhouse buttons for reversals are unreliable, which might be the reason why some of you are experiencing throws that might seem impossible to reverse.
ST Ryu vs HF Ryu …
I would prefer to play HF Ryu because of my preference for style of play. I also feel HF Ryu’s rhythm is alot smoother because he has quicker fireball recovery and CPS1 chain combos. However… I still think ST Ryu vs HF Ryu in AE is a tough call for a number of reasons.
First of all, ST Ryu’s regular moves have way more damage than HF Ryu. I think this is a bullshit handicap that shouldn’t have been there, but it’s there.
Second of all, your execution of combos have to be more precise when you’re playing an ST character. There’s something about ST characters in the game that make them block faster. High damage combos that would’ve worked on a HF character, might not even connect against an ST character. I also think this is bullshit.
Third of all, HF Ryu’s hurricane kick will have a difficult time trading hits in close range against ST Ryu’s fireball. It’s a much different fireball than HF Ryu’s. Also , ST Ryu’s red fireball can knock down … giving him more of an opportunity to pace the game his way.
Fourth of all… ST Ryu’s super will change your gameplay just because it can come out practically at anytime. It’s BS.
Now the key advantages for HF Ryu in the match is…
-
He can fireball trap ST Ryu in the corner and from my experience, ST Ryu will have a difficult time getting out.
-
Quick Dizzies. Especially with fireballs.
-
CPS1 chain combos that will keep ST Ryu guessing on how to block.
I would have to see more matches with high level players to see who comes out on top in the long run.
If ST Ryu didn’t have higher damage and a Super, I would say HF Ryu is the stronger character.
As unbalanced as AE might be… it is still unclear who the BEST character in the game is. When I say BEST, I mean… who would you choose in a tournament if you could only be ONE character for the whole tourney? Because this is not yet clear, oddly enough, I think it makes the game balanced… if that makes any sense :).
Yes CE Sagat is a crazy mofo… BUT he will still get whooped by ST Dhalsim and CE Bison, which are two highly played characters.
CE Bison is good, but he will have trouble against HF shoto characters if he doesn’t land a lucky combo.
So on and So on.
So who is the top character in the game??? Bring AE back to serious tourney play and I guarantee the winner of the tourney will be a different character every time.
Ken
CE guile is pretty buff man. guile vs sagat is a bad matchup for guile, but guile can win with knowledge of the matchup. but as far as best character, CE bison is such trash and ease of use helps him so much. once you perfect the unblockable flame from side to side the game sucks but good info on the rest of the stuff. youre a good player, maybe if we both have some time we can catch a couple games dogg.
pz
Yeah… CE Guile is pretty buff, but I think you might be the only active player that knows how to play him the right way
I wouldn’t go in with CE guile only because I wouldn’t know how to beat CE Sagat :).
With Bison…sometimes you just gotta get used to him. My opinions about Bison is that he’s hard to beat because you have to be careful with his combos and he takes alot of blood, but he’s still very possible to beat.
So do you prefer to play hyper or AE?
Ken
Nice stuff O.G Ken, and I agree with you, there are alot of powerful characters, however your info is wrong about one thing, Daigo was infact using CE. Sagat up against Jeff. Just check it out on youtube again, and I have the videos myself, it’s CE. Sagat without question, especially with the CE logo color, and the mug shot.
Daigo still lost to Jeff, even with CE. Sagat regardless, I don’t take anything away from Jeff, since during that time, he’d been away from the OG SFII scene for at least almost a good 10 years. Also, he was taking Daigo in his prime, which was around 04’.
As for your notion about CE. Sagat, he is hands down the best Sagat without question. His Tiger Shots in CE where exactly the same speed as his O. Sagat version, however at the arcades, due to the slower speed, it didn’t look as ridiculous as in ST, where the sped is up so high that 11-37 frames look simply crazy.
However, I’m not surprised, as I’ve been saying CE. Sagat was the best version since the dawning days of AE.
I used to say HF. Ryu was the best Ryu, however, I’ve changed my mind on that. CE. Ryu is hands down the best Ryu now, simply put, his damage potential is way, way better. He literally does double the damage of what HF. Ryu does. For example, CE. Ryu’s Hadouken does twice the damage of HF. Ryu’s Hadouken.
Aerial Hurricane Kick is sweet, but it’s situational in many standards, and the only thing that separates HF. Ryu from CE. Ryu. As for the HF. Ryu vs ST. Ryu standards, honestly, overall, I feel that CE. Ryu would do better overall against most of the characters then ST. Ryu.
Fighting guys like CE. Guile with ST. Ryu is a damn nightmare, simply because of the slightly slower Hadouken, and nerfed hurricane kick, while someone like CE. Ryu can do effectively well. However, in another case, ST. Ryu I can fight CE. Sagat better, simply due to the fact that I can lk. hurricane kick easily over Tiger Shots.
However, if you want my go at it, I’d say CE. Ryu overall is the best, he’s got everything HF. Ryu has+he does the most damage out of any Ryu aside from probably WW. Ryu. He also plays far more effectively overall against most of the characters than ST. Ryu.
CE. Bison is effectively powerful, and can mop up much of the cast with a complete iron fist. However, I’ve always felt that if you played a strong Shoto/Guile, and Bison would always have a difficult time. He’s powerful, but I don’t feel he’s unstoppable.
I may not be playing super elites in my time now a days, however I’ve played AE a heck of alot. Played alot of Bisons, and I’ve done very well with CE. Ryu up against, even Guile as well.
As for who’s the best in this game, I do agree with you, that it can really go either way, since there’s so many powerful characters. However overall, imo I would say that CE. Bison, CE. Ryu, CE. Guile, CE. Sagat, ST. Sim are all contenders for the top crown. Not necessarily in order, but I’d say they’d be Top 5 if this game was played far more consistently with tournaments.
So sad everyone dropped it though, too many crybabies about Cps1-Chains and it “not” playing like their arcade counterparts…sad really, considering that AE I’ve always felt was it’s own game, and not a 100% arcade port. For me, I prefer HF over AE, but I love AE alot though.
I really wished I lived in the Cali area, would love to be able to play you guys. Maybe when I visit relatives this Summer in Cali, we could find a day to hook up and do some casual rounds, would be sweet :lovin:
you’re right. He did play CE Sagat. The video quality was horrible so you can barely tell.
i hear you seph, i absolutely love AE. so this game isnt very popular? why? this has got to be the SF2 of them all. whats the tourney scene for this game?
me, i play guile alot and i mean ALOT(CE btw). i feel like he has the tools to beat any character. sure i play with ryu, bison and the like but i always keep guile as my main.
the character that gives me the most trouble from experience is CE sagat, goddamn he fustrating.
the most powerful character imo, is CE bison, and for 1 reason: cross up phycho crusher. if the opposing bison times it just right, he’ll get you blocking the other way every time. and if you block it guess what? SAME DAMAGE. i hate it.

That’s where the beauty of this game is. Ironically, out of all those players you mentioned, only ST Sim finished strong at the SBO held here in the U.S. The strongest player that showed up was ST Chung Li played by Norm. ST players were definitely the strong ones in this tourney.
I personally was able to take out CE guile and ST Sim with HF Ken, however had trouble with St Balrog, because I didn’t have a clue how to play against him, and Super Dhalsim.
Who is played and who finishes are 2 different things :).
I think all this game needs is some damage adjustments and it will be more fun.
Why are so many Ryu versions top tier and upper tier in this game?
I mean I love it cuz Ryu is the man but still…
Explanation plz.
I’ve been meaning to put this up but I hardly visit this sub-forum. Here’s are some matches at my house (some casual, some first to #):

TrueSephiroth: Somewhat off-topic, but are you going to Gamma Bowl? I’d like to play you in Hyper Fighting before you retire for good. I understand that Hyper Fighting is your favorite game of all-time, as is mine. It’s sad that the game is pretty dead, though (replaced by ST). If you only accept money matches, that’s fine, as long as I face someone in this great game.
Only pure HF by the way. no AE. I’ll have the set-up, all you’ll need is probably a stick.
EmblemLord, so many Ryu’s are good is because in SFII, most of the Ryu incarnations are very strong. CE. Ryu was no joke, HF. Ryu was the best character in that game, and ST. Ryu is one of the best characters in ST…I don’t remember, but he’s either #5 or #6 in there.
In AE, his Hadouken’s are excellent spacing tools, he’s got some of the best pokes in the game, especially his CE/HF counterparts jabs, they simply rock. Jab shoryuken, Hurricane Kick has high priority (CE/HF version definetly). Imo, the most important factor in SFII’s gameplay, is that he’s one of the best zoning/spacing/footsie game characters in AE bar none, which is why he’s a force.
He’s got all of the tools neccessary to be consistent, and very few characters who will have an advantage over him, which is why he’s arguably one of the best in the game. I mean, being a Ryu player, I may “sound biased” however, looking at it all, I strongly consider his Ryu within the Top 5 in AE if played right, and in the right hands.
To answer your question Tarkan, I’m not going to Gamma Bowl, and to further it all. I’m not going to any tournaments anymore. I’ve long since shut myself out from competition everywhere, even locally where I live, I no longer enter in anymore tournaments for the fighting games that I used to play competitively.
For me, I just don’t have to heart to improve my game, because I just don’t have that intensity I used too (me getting older now has ALOT to do with it, and the mere fact that I have other more pressing matters in life that’s far more important). However, I will casual it up from time to time. I apologize, but yes, I’m done with tournaments or MM’s, you name it.
Still I’m a supporter of them, but I’m done from competitive gaming. Not to mention, I’ve given my J-Stick away, to a buddy of mine, since he’s into competitive gaming now, and resides near Chicago.
Still, although I’m done with taking FG’s seriously, it still won’t stop me from talking about my love for AE and especially for HF (Lol, just look at my neg reps, simply because I’ve posted my statements of how I feel that HF>>>>ST, getting alot of ST fans pissed) :lovin:.
I wish you the best of luck in the Gamma Bowl if that’s where your going. HF maybe dead, but I’m glad some of you guys actually like to play it and want to get serious at it. to you guys.
Btw, if your ever up within the Green Bay area, give me a hollar or pm. You can come and kick it at me and my bros place, and we can definetly casual it up. Sometimes, some of of my OG buddies will get together and we’ll play and pretend like it was 1993 again, lmao!
Anyways, AE was always underrated, simply because too many people couldn’t tolerate the CPS-1 characters, and or, it wasn’t “arcade perfect”. It’s a joke really, if only I lived in Japan, at least there, this game still gets playing time, would’ve loved doing casuals up over there.
Psychochronic, nice vids.
Maybe if I’m not lazy, and when I have time, I’ll record matches of my brother and I duking it out on AE, and post it here lolz.
Here’s a playlist from 1-12-08:
psycho,
your fei long’s pretty cool mang.
Whomever is playing Gief in this series missed like 10 chances to SPD on wakeup
For some reason, I can’t seem to play too well on Turbo 2 in AE, like…everything seems off for me. In Turbo 3, it’s even worst, the only speed setting that I like/prefer is Turbo 1, maybe because it’s closest to Hyper Fighting Speed.
