Thanks! I drew her face like 6 times, but I think the end result is pretty good.
First post updated with K’, Venom (Guilty Gear), and Felicia (again).
First post updated with Yuri, Ayane, Ken, Blanka, and Hulk. I had a tough time with Blanka, but he’s mostly obscured on the stick art so I just went with it. I’ll probably fix up Ken’s face to make him more manly before I’m done.
I’m curious to know what people think of me updating the first post and just bumping it when I draw something new. I will probably start a new thread after the stick art is done. As always, feedback is welcome.
I’m really curious to know what your coloring process is if you don’t mind sharing some secrets!
I’m really jealous of your skin tones and overall cleanliness. Feels very complete
I start on a light gray canvas and sketch out the gesture of the character first. Sticking with the same layer, I draw over different areas and define them as I go. Once I feel like the tones make sense, I add value using a “colorize” layer (in Painter, similar to a color layer in Photoshop). Once I feel like the colors are starting to make sense, I combine my tone and value into one layer and work from there, adding multiply and colorize layers If I need to.
To keep things smooth and clean, I switch between hard brushes (scratchboard, pen) and soft brushes (tinting, camel hair oil). I sometimes use a blender (just add water) when things need to be smoothed out. I try to avoid hard lines until the very end since I work on mostly 1 layer and things tend to blur with soft brushes.
As for skin tones and color, I’d suggest starting out with less saturated colors and building on them as you go. Skin tends to be more yellow in highlights and more red around edges like elbows and the nose. I try to find a nice middle ground in skin saturation so characters don’t look like zombies or robots (unless they’re supposed to be).
I hope this info has been useful for you, though it mostly pertains to Painter and I know most people use Photoshop.
The stick is done! Check the first post for the full layout. From here on out, I think I will just post random stuff here and leave the first post alone.
