Hybridmink's "Everyone" Stick COMPLETE (and other art)

Really feeling Hybrid… My only crit would be maybe to study your anatomy a bit. Love the colors too. Maybe adding a separate layer of color dodge to really give some of those lights and fires that “umph”

Yeah anatomy is a constant struggle. I’ve taken classes and I’ve got books, but it’s still tough to get a stylized look with realistic anatomy. Though you make it look easy. I think I’m watching you on deviantart and your lines remind me of the CVS2 style a lot.

I actually used a linear dodge on felicia as well as the effects on the drawing below. I may do that more often going forward.

yeah it definitely takes some getting used to, but once you got it it feels like you’re pulling off infinites for the first time lol

Ummmmm… something i tend to mix up, my heads… i draw them as skulls rather than that cirlce, circle redundant junk. Plus it gives your characters solidity. that and knowing where bones come out and stay in… like in the forearm, ribcage, fat people old people… stuff like that’s really cool to look at. I just know it’s a pain in the ass to go outside your comfort zone, but i know you can dish out some sick stuff once nailed

It’s funny, I have people tell me about the comfort zone all the time but I actually take a slightly different approach to starting off every time. Unfortunately, I struggle with faces more than anything and I end up devolving into the flatter-anime face simply because I like the look. I think I will try drawing a skull next time (after the 2 drawings I’m currently working on) and see what happens.

I love the Nu <333

But daym, wish I could colour that way. That’s the style I’ve been aiming for with mine x_x

Thanks

If it helps, I start with black and white to nail down the tones and add multiply layers as needed.

That may well help yush, but I mean, how do you get them looking so soft? I’ve only managed to make things look semi soft in hair (Like my avatar and even then I did a shoddy job XD)

Well it’s a combination of soft and hard brushes. I use about 10 brushes in Corel Painter, but I think I really focus on one really hard and one really soft brush (scratchboard and tinting). Most of my soft shading is done at a super low opacity of 2 or 4%. A good course of action is to avoid “pillow shading” which is simply putting soft shadows around every edge, even round ones. Believe me, I did it for years and once I started to focus on shading in planes and surfaces, my work improved dramatically.

Also I’d recommend a figure drawing class if you have the opportunity. I took 4 semesters of it in college and even though it wasn’t my major, they were the most important classes I’d ever taken.

I don’t have the time nowadays for classes =( Really sucks because I’d take one if I could (work hours get in the way, you see).
And thanks, I’ll give it a shot. I’ve only been colouring the best part of two weeks so it’s probably best I don’t expect results right away X3

Well even a 3 hour class, once a week after work can make a huge difference. I guess it depends on how important your art is to you. As far as how long it takes to get better…well you can just look at my deviantart account in my signature and go all the way back to the first page. It’s a dramatic difference. I don’t even want to look at the things I drew BEFORE that.

The classes here clash with my work hours unfortunately =( They’re constantly rotational so I never know whether I’m able to attend and I feel terrible missing a class.
and haha, I made a comparison of my own stuff earlier and I’m a little disappointed in myself D: I’m following you now on DA too haha/

Damn, well there’s always books and the internet.

Thanks for the watch!

I think I’ll just mention when to check the first post from now on. So uhh, check the first post for 3 new images!

(Sakura, Cammy, Makoto Nanaya). I may have to do some more editing as I’m not thrilled with the results. Sakura seems fine at least.

I think im going to start doing the first page updates as well. Its more organized.

I like those new pieces, you have a way with coloring your characters. However, I believe its safe to say that the posture on cammys arms are a little bit nlop sided, but I think if you fix her body suit and re align the shadow on her Braid, it will give way to a better foreshortening for your character

Yeah it’s definitely a problem. I fixed the body pretty late in the drawing and that made the angle and shading on the braids change around a bit. I don’t want to completely redraw her, but I might have to.

I went back and edited Cammy and Makoto.

So I DL’d Paint Tool Sai and remembered that you produce your wonderful pieces with it.

Now I gotta ask, where on earth is everyone getting the tint and scratch brushes from? :< All I’ve got is the standard bits and I have no idea where to search and I remember you saying you used them.

Oh well actually I use Corel Painter X, but I hear Sai is pretty similar. In painter, tinting is its own category and scratchboard is a pen tool. Basically tinting is a circular soft brush and scratchboard is a diamond shaped hard brush. I mostly use low opacity (like 2-4%) for tinting and around 50% opacity for scratchboard. Honestly though, it all depends on how you like to work and how hard you press when you draw.

Anyways, I drew some more characters. Check the first post!

Ohhh I see. I see people on dA using a tint tool in Sai and I have no idea how to get it XD It’s driving me nuts.

And I really really love that Baiken :3
