Now, what bothers me is people pronouncing ü the same as a regular u. It’s nowhere near the same sound. I don’t even speak German and I fucking know it’s pronounced more like y than a u. I could complain about my own language (protip: å is more like oh than an a, ö is uh, and ä is kind of like an eh sound) but we’re culturally insignificant. Germany, though? They’ve been the designated villains since the 1930s! It’s the first fucking line in their national anthem. It’s in a lot of the only words an English speaker would know in German. Übermensch, führer, all them cool Nazi words. Most of you know Deutschland is pronounced Doytchland. How is it that hard to learn a letter that is in pretty much the only words you know in an entire language? I shit on the cyrillic alphabet all the time, but even I managed to learn that P is actually pronounced R. Or that in Mandarin, tao is actually pronounced dao and qi is pronounced chi. Because, yes, the only Chinese I know comes from wuxia.

also sounds were synthesize back then so the original recording will come up different than intended.

so it’s perfectly normal anyone would come up with their own made up pronunciations

Why do so many people say this? Just a little off-topic lingautistic question that has been bugging me. Is it because in an older official release it was romanized as “hadouken” rather than “hadōken” or just “hadoken” and they read “ou” as “ooh” because our baka gaijin Anglophone pronunciation is so silly and inconsistent, and back then we didn’t have the internet to correct us? I thought in the SFII era it was just called “fireball”. I’m curious – how did you guys learn to pronounce it, and has your pronunciation of it changed since then? I think I first learned to pronounce it as /həˈdoʊˌkɛn/ (huh-DOH-ken), although now I tend to pronounce it /ˈhædoʊːkɛnˌ/ (HA-doh-ken, with “a” as in American English “at”).

As a side question, do we ever remember 昇龍拳 being romanized as “shouryuuken” (which it probably was if 波動拳 was ever romanized as “hadouken”) and if so, how come I’ve never heard it pronounced “shooryooken”? Do we think it’s because the “uu” makes people subconsciously realize that the “ou” probably isn’t pronounced the same way? And if so, do how come “hadouken” still gets pronounced with an “ooh”?
