Depressing news ahead: I did some testing in training mode and to neutral jump over rose’s lp soul spark with hugo has to literally be frame perfect to not get hit. I’m not even kidding, its a one frame jump timing, if you miss that one frame you will either get hit on the way up or on the way down.
I don’t feel like Bison is one of his more super hard match-ups. He has a lot of laggy pokes to st.hp or focus dash spd through.
He also enjoys taking to the air where a lot of those options can lose to back breaker with correct timing and spacing recognition. It’s probably more in bison’s favor but I don’t know if it’s one of the more harder match-ups
Does anybody have advice on landing a standing U1? I can’t seem to get it before Hugo jumps. I probably need to just spend some more time and grind it out, and churn my butter faster, but what position do people start the rotation in? I usually go 6321478963214 ( f, df, d, db, b, ub, u, uf, f, df, d, db, b ) but always end up just getting a jumping HP.
I wish Hugo’s “grab detection” on his meat squasher had a lil bit more range, I swear there’s been times where the opponent wasn’t in block stun and walking backwards while Hugo was running basically next to him trying to grab him then whiffs in front of my opponent.
I also wish Hugo’s run speed was a lil faster on his EX Lariat.
A Super and Focus cancellable Cr. MP would be nice too.
Its not the run speed that bothers me, its the insanely long hitstop when he absorbs a hit. I’ve done a point blank ex lariat against an Adon who did his two hit hk. The hitstop from absorbing both hits created so much extra time that he was able to recover before the lariat actually hit him.
He doesn’t really need to do anything. He can build meter from fullscreen with oicho and can even counterpoke really well against Hugo with s.HK and s.MP.
Honda also gets some really solid character specific hands combos and EX Oicho (now being 5fr throw invincible) is an extremely strong tool when applying pressure on Hugo.
The only option Hugo has on EX oicho is jumping away or backdashing, everything else gets beaten.
Tonight is one of those nights where I really regret wanting to play hugo. For every one win there was at least 2 losses. The struggle is too real to try and learn.
everyone talked shit when I made a thread about it, but it’s true: Hugo has to work twice as hard for every victory as other chars.
the only time Hugo has an easy fight is against people who’s never fought him.
You have to completely, utterly outplay your opponent. you gotta guess right, you gotta make sick reads, you just gotta basically do everything right, all the time.
And people talking about “yea but dat damage doe” need to wake up. almost EVERY character in this game can do high damage with their combos. Hugo’s combos aren’t any stronger than E.Ryu, oni etc, and on top of that he doesn’t get their zoning and neutral game.
Hugo is a weak character, flat out. Can you win with him? sure, you can win with anybody. it’ll just be way harder.
Nah it wasn’t really that though. Like I kept fucking up a lot too so it’s not just the character. I’m 90% sure most of the people didn’t have MU experience but I didn’t go for stronger things or better mix-ups. I meant more that it was a lot of trying to fight zoners or what not. I actually think if you know the match-up more people tend to get scared or respect you and let you go for things than those that really don’t care.
There were times where lag really fucked me where it wouldn’t someone else though (walk forward block is stupid hard online for some reason)
Hugo’s combos ARE stronger than Onis and E.ryu when you take in account for meter and then add in a reset into dead. We all KNOW he’s a weak character no was is going to dispute that, but that doesn’t mean he’s completely unplayable. I don’t even believe he’s worse than Deejay or Dan. It’s still REALLY early into the game to say much though.
Hugo is actually one of the only things keeping me playing because I just have a ton of fun playing him in a game where I used to struggle to stay interested for long periods.
Oddly enough Hugo makes me super impatient when I play Marvel I’m really patient comparatively. I think it’s mainly due to his walk speed so I struggle to play a stronger footsie game if I’m not in the mid range (where i Feel the most comfortable.) I probably also need to be more confident with my mix-ups and stop being so afraid of what the other player could do. That could be a problem as I always just expect they’ll wake-up or not at the wrong times and it gets me the loss. I need to learn better spacing with the characters Focus Dashes and buttons so I’m not whiffing and getting hit. Punishes are a huge thing too because I go for either sub-par SPD punishes when I can get claps (because I’m not confident in getting them and I’ll drop into reversal’d into get zoned) Or I’ll go for something else and mess up. It’s a lot of me before just the character. It’s just the character isn’t helping me any when I REALLY have to be on my game and have a lot of knowledge of the game to play him.
i know that feel, i actually am starting to feel like playing hugo is making me play smarter in other games, tekken, sc (even though im ass balls at it), 3S, sfxt, and even darksouls 2 (lol) hes a very insightful character
I’m doing much better with hugo than any other character in my entire SF4 playing time. Like, since vanilla. I do’nt know if its just because I’ve improved as a competitive fighting game player, but the damage and life is significant. Also, getting certain knockdown setups just really allow you to go for some pretty sweet mixups. Sure, there are bad match ups like Sagat and Guile, but I tend to do better than I would have if I used e honda or Cody (the chars i main’ed in the other games in the series).
The past couple of days, I’ve been focusing on abandoning safe jumps and instead using the meaty FP clap or whiff MP clap setups based on the initial knockdowns.
That brings me to two questions
What are you guys doing when they decide to just block the meaty FP clap? like what are u using to follow up? I’ve been alternating between s HP and cr LP (and then cancel into ex backbreaker if I see them jump and avoid the cr LP). I like these options as they lead to another meaty clap setup
In training mode, the meaty FP clap OS ultra 2 seems to whiff on cody’s back dash. I don’t know if its spacing or what.
Also, whenever I use cross up body splash, I just go for cr MK on hit. I used to try cr LK xx lariat, but too often I get lk back breaker.
