Hugo general Thread

What? but he’s got more options to get through fireballs than any other grappler.

EX lariat has so much super armor it’s ridiculous. if you time it right you will go right through their fireballs and be right up in the face.

His claps smash fireballs.

down down MK hop goes through fireballs.

Standing HP armor can absorb a fireball.

if you’re real desperate, you can use EX backbreaker to literally leap across the stage and get right up in their face. you may take a hit for it, but you’ll close that distance real quick.

and if they try to jump away from you, heavy/EX backbreaker punishes. hell it even punishes backdash.

Can fireballs be annoying? of course, he’s a grappler. it’s their lot in life. but he’s definitely not any weaker to fireball spam than gief, hawk or the like.

My main gripes with Hugo so far:

-I often get that stupid s.mk when I’m trying to do ddMK (especially after an empty jump or dash).

-I have trouble getting EX Meat Squasher consistently. Backbreaker or Lariat often comes out instead.

-It appears that Hugo can get mashed out or thrown out of everything he has. Even his EX Command throws and armored moves lose to 3f jab mashing and 3f throw…

-MP clap to EX clap is a bitch. HP clap into EX clap is much more consistent so that’s what I’ll use.

-I have a lot of trouble with ddMK, cr.lp xx Super (when ddMK doesn’t hit meaty and without CH that is).

I’m having the hardest time with EX clap to LP clap. MP clap to EX is roughly the same as HP to MP.

SPD will beat mash in most cases (after st.LK it’s especially good.) I keep forgetting Hugo’s SPD game is pretty good. Better range on his LP spd than thawk and pretty close to gief’s.

EX clap > LP clap is a pretty godlike string. 3f gap and combos. Probably be using my meter mostly for this, EX ultra throw, and ex back breaker

Dammit, wrong thread.

I use U2 almost exclusively right now, but I’m sure that eventually, I’ll be switching between them as matchups dictate.

You would think so but you actually need to link it quicker. HP clap has a lot more +frames than MP clap so you can take your sweet time to link MP or EX.

As for EX to LP, you just need to do it REALLY late. I start doing a hcb motion when I hear the claps. Or qcb motion when I hear the second clap of EX.

Yeah why are his kick specials such a mess? I can’t even recall how many times I’ve tried to do EX Meat Squasher and I CANNOT get anything besides back breaker. It makes me scared to even do anything on wake up with his kick specials.

I have more of a problem trying to get wake-up or block string ex MS and I just get Jump back HK because of the one skill where they decided leniency wasn’t needed :[
Btw characters you can Link St.lk/lp on after MS: Sagat, Vega, Hugo, Juri, Viper, Bison, Cody, Balrog (only one I could get LP on)

On the plus side, standing 720’s are ridiculously easy with Hugo. I managed to master it in like 5 minutes.

this is one of the first things i noticed the second day of playing him, it really blows.

I have no problems with MP to EX Clap, that’s easy.

the standing 720 is so so for me, i could do it 5-6 times in a row, and then i dropped it so i couldn’t do it properly. Thing is i start from 632 etc, so if im on the rightside and i have full super i get super instead of standing 720, and that sucks :P.

I have problems with Meatsquasher, BUT you have to end with an upmovement, that’s why he has those extra prejump frames. I noticed i start from 6, and i end up at 8 or 9 and it comes out, you should not do this sloppy. I hate that i get Backbreaker sometimes when i want lariat.

Is there a specific input for standing 720? Or we can do it as we like?

Try to do it as fast as you can. That’s what i did.

EDIT: I usually start from 6321 etc.

hugo vs elena is a nightmare…

Why is Clap x N so much harder to perform (not just time to combo, but actually perform) in this game? While in SF3 series I could could ring out claps almost continuously, here I have to be much more methodical, having to wait a lot longer in between Claps to perform another one (I swear you can’t begin the input for a Clap during a Clap, but only during hitstun), and yet also having to do the motion much faster. It makes otherwise simple Clap combos stupidly hard to perform. I don’t understand it. Is Is it a speed thing?

Then there’s the fact that Claps have different timing. Why does EX Clap to LP Clap have different timing to the others?

try to do a half circle instead and tapp the button 2-3 times, that’s how i learned how to do claps. Now i can do it the “normal way”, since after a while you get the timing down.

When ultra hit, i only wanted to do clap combos, so i started working on the timing right as i started playing.

EDIT:

The reason EX clap has a tighter link is because ex clap is apparently +16 on hit, and LP clap has a startup of 15 frames, so it’s a 2 frame link, meanwhile, MP clap is +18 on hit, so it’s a 4 frame link to LP clap if im correct.

If EX clap was +18 on hit and then we could link into a mp clap from the ex one, and loop it 4 times, that would be too good.

HP clap on hit is +21
MP clap on hit is +18
LP clap on hit is +9 on hit.

Startup on MP clap is 19
Startup on EX clap is 17
Startup on LP clap is 15

EDIT 2:

On the meatsquasher thing, im doing the 63214789 motion, and thanks to hugos extra frames on his prejump frames, it is quite doable.

EDIT 3: took clap info from this:

Some things never change.

Meat squasher will always come out if you don’t do it while you’re crouching. Hold back or forward and make sure you hit the kicks when the stick is point up, his extra pre jump frames help a ton.

Os back breaker is amazing for those that back dash or neutral jump on their wake up

Hey all, what’s the best follow up to do after ultra throw while facing the corner? I can’t seem to catch them with clap. Megaton even misses I think.

If you do ultra throw, does the opponent switch side with you? If so, i think LK Backbreaker is the best option.
