Hugo general Thread

If you’re talking about the link backbreaker after super it does work but only on specific characters. LK Backbreaker only though I believe. And Ultra via Desk’s video.

So to contribute some ideas and thoughts, I agree there seems to be some overlap on the commands. After all Lariat, Backbreaker, Ultra throw, and Meat Squasher are all Kick inputs and you have to be pretty clean to get the right ones. Messed up alot of Backbreakers and Meat Squasher tonight.

As for the clap loops, I recommend double tapping after buffering the claps. You have to really wait until AFTER the clap hits before inputting the next clap. Biggest problem is doing it too early but you actually have to wait alot longer.

Alot of people are talking/asking about the kara Ultra throw but not alot of answers about them. As UltraDavid had stated in his video the inputs are HCB LP~K(KK) meaning you are plinking LP and a kick or two kicks for EX. It has to be a clean plink and you’ll be able to tell in training room with inputs turned on. For me I usually do LP~HK plink since it has that MUCH reach. I’m going to guess in StormKubo’s video he does just that to punish Honda’s EX Headbutt w/o meter at all.

IMO, I think this is a very essential thing to learn in making Hugo that much more scary. Some of you expressed trouble with Honda’s Headbutts but SKubo just showed you can punish the EX one with Kara grab. Other tick setups are going to be alot more useful as well. The plink itself is kinda weird but I’ve assigned another LP to the very last button after HK (on a stick) and it makes the plink SO much easier. At that point it’s just a normal plink since it’s going Right to Left and it’s very viable to do in a match and highly suggest other Hugo players to do this. Afterall it’s just in game assignment so it’s not cheating or anything. =3

I notice you can do SPD, HP clap as a mix-up. if you do it perfectly, the clap will hit too soon and whiff, allowing you to instantly SPD them again. If you delay it a few frames it will hit meaty, allowing you to pressure them. If they backdash, you can most likely pursue them, but you’ll have to read it (Maybe you can do clap to MS to catch both blockers and backdashers?). If they DWU, you’ll be able to react to it and be safe, maybe even have time to throw out a meaty light if you want.
If you have a hard time timing the HP clap, you can use MP clap for the feint as well. Fake clap to SPD has always been my favorite Hugo gimmick, I’m glad it’s still in.

Guys, is there any consistent way of landing HP>MP>LP claps? I kinda mash at the end of the animation of any version. Still its kinda inconsistent for my taste. I havent played Hugo in 3S or SFXT

I try to time them so that I do them right as the hitstop of the previous clap ends (for HP and MP claps). Do a quick tap and you can activate them with negative edge if you’re too fast.

So I’ve seen people talk about leap attack. What is that attack good for exactly? I’m not really up on its properties.

Goes over fireballs and is a good, if only sparingly used, meaty attack. Super safe on block. With a late hit you can combo out of it.

Cool, thanks. Sounds like I need to mess around with it.

you can always combo c.LP from leap attack, even if it hits on the first frame.

i’ve found it to be helpful to use triple kicks for kara ultra throw. my hand feels a bit cramped up when doing the ex version, so i really helps to have my pinky reach out that far. i’d suggest giving it a try if you’re having trouble with that kara.

I think Rolento is gonna be a pain in the ass.

I haven’t found any buttons that you can use against him on the ground yet. Seems like he has better buttons and and obviously a faster walk speed.

Yeah I’m having a hard time with those too. I’ve even watched people on YouTube do it and even though my timing is exact to theirs, I still can’t get it to come out. I can do it sometimes when I mash the QCB but that starts becoming painful on my fingers.

Really want to get this down, since it can lead into a free super.

EDIT: Never mind, I figured out what I was doing wrong with the super vs Poison’s LP Aeolus Edge. I was actually alternating between doing the super too early AND too late. The timing is VERY weird to clear that fireball because of the biggest problem in this matchup – Aeolus Edge is fat and so is Hugo. But it can be done.

I finally realize now what the frame data means when it’s talking about the 1-3 invul frames at short range vs the 1-11 invul frames at long range. Hugo doesn’t get his huge invul window until a few frames into his run. This is very annoying because it means that even if you’re as close as, say, c. MK range to Poison when she fires an Aeolus Edge, you won’t get the full invul (Hugo will go into the “close” phase of his super due to game logic) and will get hit meaty by the fireball. And if you’re too far out, of course Poison can block the super. So you have to be at a fairly precise spacing in order to clear the fireball. (And you probably have to KNOW it’s the LP fireball or else you might get meatied by the closer-range fireballs. But I’ll test to be sure.)

How the hell do you guys deal with fb zoning characters like poison and guile? Hugo doesn’t seem to have that get in move. I did a perfectly timed ex lariat and it was blocked, obviously they have great recovery but still.

Move forward and block.

Stop jumping towards them too.

Hugo’s Jump knee thing can take him over Fireballs but dont use it too close because I am 100% positive he can get punished for it.

Hugo mirror match is super annoying. Gotta play like a monk and get the life lead and hold it. Seems like all of my meaty mixups are a gamble because of the wheel of options defensively and offensively. Might need some kind of OS technology to tone the guessing down. Once more Hugos play it right I think it’ll be the most boring match in the game. Excruciating.

So I only won like 5-6 out 20+ matches last night xD. So many Decapres and Ryus… Still I’m feeling good about him. There’s just no way you can play a slow huge character like Hugo and not expect to get bodied in the first month or so.

Remember, one of the most important things is the footsie game at the start of the round. You want them to come to you once they get mad after taking some of your fat pokes. If they try to zone you out, be strong and patient like a potato. I had a Ryu player successfully zone me out in the first game we played, then he got cocky and tried to go in on me in the second game. I mean… I still lost the second game also, but at least he won with 5% health remaining instead of 90% xD

Soon… we will be numbah wan!

so ive played a lot today so far and the hardest match ups for me are Zangief, hakan, and blanka.

zangief short jump arc makes it hard for me to backbreak him especially when he does body slam or jump hp. even st.hp seems to fail against him jumping in sames goes for hakan who has an even shorter jump arc then zangief and his oil command grab range is nuts. lol

blanka… for obvious reasons but you can punish blanka balls with air grab. but even then once they stop doing that they usually just wait accros the screen for you to approach. so thats really annoying.

Going to my first tourney with him tonight. Will report how the matches go.
