How you got better

I’ve just gotten into Street Fighter and even though I’ve read and practiced a bunch of stuff, I just don’t know how to translate that into a win. What did you guys practice to get better? I’m having such a hard time with my neutral game (playing decapre) but I’m not sure what to do to practice it. I don’t know decapre’s footsies well but I think that’s a discussion for the character specific forum, so in general how do you practice neutral/footsies type stuff?

I may be able to help with this. While I’m not qualified to teach anything about Street Fighter, I have spoken to lots of tournament-level fighting gamers and this information can be translated into any fighting game.

I’d say that practice makes perfect. The more you play, the better you’ll get.

Like you, I spent weeks – maybe months – practicing to get better at other fighting games. Most of my time was spent learning the mechanics of the game. While I got good at the game, I encountered people who could beat me every single time. And these few people never even stepped into the training room. I asked them how they could be so good, and they said they just played the game, got over their frustrations, and learned by experience.

The more time you spend doing something, the better you’ll get. This is a law of nature. While training mode can be your best friend, ultimately I believe getting out there and taking on the challengers is your best way to learn.

Don’t dread failure. Embrace it, for the losers learn more than the winners. Take care.

Footsies:

one of the best videos I’ve seen with an explanation of how to practice.

Training room is just one part of the whole.

I use training room to practice executing important combos, punish combos and setups.

I like to watch match videos of various players who play the character I main along with the replays on the street fighter leaderboards to see how they use the combos and different setups when, why and how.

I use the various forums and google to view the guides and other stuff people showcase.

I use the guides on youtube to see the stuff they talk about on the forums in action.

I go to various livestreams to see live matches of the players I follow and ask questions when I need help with a certain thing in sf 4.

I even have an app on my phone (FA-Tool) that I sometimes use when im curious about the frame advantage of a certain move/normal and how (if possible) could I punish said move or normal.

I use endless lobbies to practice certain things on people over and over till I feel warmed up or I go to ranked for faster matches if I don’t feel like waiting in line.

I watch my own matches (wins and losses) to see what I’m doing right or wrong and I try to make mental notes for future matches on what to do and what not to do vs all the different characters.

All that + just facing people over and over, win or lose.

Getting good takes time, but its how you spend your time getting good that determines how much time is wasted. If you spend your time wisely then you will get good faster. Good luck, and save some vids or your gameplay in the replay section so that you can look back at them and see how much you progress.

I got better when I stopped caring about winning my matches. Caring about winning will cloud your mind to the point where you can’t focus as much on learning about your mistakes and bad habits.

What system you playing on, if you’re on PC i can be your master.

Still got a long way to go but I did improve, I gotten better mainly by 3 ways. 1. I lost more than I won matches, some players till this day have their mindset focus on winning so much they ignore certain things like how did they lose or what did their opponents do whenever they lost a match etc. Now it’s gotten to the point I play to learn more than play to win.

  1. Studying the games mechanics greatly helped me in getting better like Anti-airs, Blockstrings, Frame traps, Crouch tech etc.

  2. Finally watching better players that uses the characters I play (Ryu, Ken, Balrog) really provided me some great insight

I am on PC actually. I’d be glad to add you.

Thanks for this.

I’ve won only like four or five games in my life, I just like playing this game tbh.

What’s your Steam?
Actually add me: iYorKeY

I played random weirdos on xbl a lot until I could beat them all

now I’m king of the xbl universe

You start out knowing a lot of things without really understanding it. With playing the game itself comes that understanding.

I read and listened to a ton of the material out there onfootsies, spacing, and the rest, but I couldn’t make use of it for quite some time until I had gotten practiced enough with actual play.

Thanks! That’s some serious sh*t right there! Should be in the Noobie Must watch Video thread.

Get bodied by a situation => Try different answers to situation => Find something that works (answer can be eg. my antiairs don’t handle jumpins from this distance well => stand farther out so my antiair tool can beat their jumpin) => Do it from here on out.
A match is a set of problems, look for answers.
