How to/Setups for cross-up for Ken?

I just started this playing this month and figured that Ken would be a good character. Im not a lazy person and done research before I ask questions.

Recently, when reading the forums, I see a lot of people talking about c.mk and s.mk cross-up which raise a big question mark for me. I thought you can only do crossup when your opponent is quickstanding and is done by dashing through?

Hope somebody can answer my question. Thanks.

you can super jump and cross’em up with a UOH (Universal Overhead) mk, mp, hp, fireball XXX SA III.

Or you can crossup with an UOH mk, lk, lk, XXX SA III.

To initiate the crossup you must superjump by pointing the stick or direction pad (Controller) in the diagnal upward position.

I hope this can aid in assistance.

What you’re describing is a ground cross-up, which is one way to do it. A cross up is any situation in which you switch over to the other side of the opponent to hit them from behind; there are multiple different ways to do this.

The most common one with Ken is actually to jump over them after a knockdown, and press mk right as they’re getting up. The mk will hit them from behind, and leads into Ken’s B&B combos, like mp, hp xx lp shoryu.

bm717252 seems to have some issues with terminology. so to clarify:

  • super jumps are performed by tapping down/up very quickly, and are not necessary in order to cross over. Some cross-up tricks do use super jumps to get the spacing right, though.
  • a UOH (universal overhead) is the move performed by pressing mp+mk with the stick in neutral. There is no such thing as a “UOH mk”, and it cannot be used while jumping. There are a couple of cross-over setups with the UOH vs short characters (i.e., crouching Chun), but it is not generally used for the purpose of crossing someone up.

Thank you for the help from both of you. It really clears thing up. There are just 2 more question I would like to ask, can you do a air cross-up like j.mk when your opponent is in the corner?

For “UOH mk”, does it mean kara UOH I guess? Do you execute this move by pressing mk>mk+mp quickly?

Depends on the character. Against shotos and Dudley, yes. Experiment and you’ll get it.

When that other guy was saying UOH mk, he probably thought UOH meant jumping to the other side (which makes sense based on the name, even though that’s not what it is). Ken doesn’t have any UOH crossups, excluding any obscure situations that I don’t know about. Best kara UOH method is probably c.HK~UOH, or s.HK if you have trouble doing it with a crouching move. Read the kara UOH thread for more info on that.

Sorry for the misuse of terminology. Just trying to help.

anyway thanks that helped me too =)

i got a question.
what does kara mean?

From kanjidict:

?
( ??) (kara) (adj-no) (n)- blank

Now in street fighter it basicly means cancelling any normal a few frames after it’s start up into a special. By this, throws, UOH and taunts are special, and taunt is the only special that’s allowed after K.O. Now, c.HK gains you the most distance with Ken, some other moves such as f.MK and f.HK go backwards. This means that if you for example use f.HK throw you’ll be moving backwards during the cancel.

With Ken, by far the best application of karaing moves is kara shoryuken. It’s not really hard, just inconsistent as hell:P We pick a character like Ken for an opponent and we’ll start off in the corner. There we do c.MK X LPsrk,LPsrk(this does more damage then c.MK XX SA3), this ofcourse works;) Now we go midscreen, where it all of a sudden fails. Midscreen the second LPsrk needs to be kara’d from either c.HK or c.MK. And remember f.HK makes you go backwards, one mistake in your motion and you’ll be moving the wrong way:P

So for the second shoryuken we’re entering the strict dp motion f,d,df then we press HK and LP right after each other in that order. And the best way to do that is put your hand in a shape that when slamming it onto your stick will always cause HK to go down before LP. You’ll soon figure your middlefinger is cause more harm then good, so I suggest you press HK with your ringfinger and LP with both your index and your middle finger. This allows you to kara 600 times a day without fucking up your hand in the process.
