How to not suck at Fei Long: An Advanced Fei Long Guide

KK, guess I’ll have to practice a bit more with it to see what it does exactly, I’ve been using it online to test what you guys say but I still can’t get it to work for me.

This might be old news so forgive me if I’m late, but I found the other day that if you BUFFER a close standing jab into the command grab it grabs them just after they leave block stun. This to me was a ground breaking find for my Fei which was already doing quite well. Leads to all sorts of setups.

If this is nothing new though nvm

The only problem with the close standing jab is that if you do the cl.standing jab after a jump in or cr.lk, (character specific) the jab will whiff. Meaning to say, the standing jab has to be the initial attack against all characters.

But there’s alot of Tenshin setups that you can go off with. You can also do it off of cr.lk, cr.lk xx EX Tenshin. cr.lk, cr.lp xx EX Tenshin works well also. For frontal attacks mostly.

I’m not sure what you mean but it shouldn’t whiff. That’s kinda the point of what I’m seeing. The initial jump option I’m seeing here for example:

Jumpin late roundhouse if blocked stand jab > command throw

Jumpin late roundhouse if hits stand jab > confirm fierce > rekkas

The thing with canceling/buffering the jab is they can’t mash jab in between the jab and command grab if the command grab is the ex version.

So in some respects, having a slow command grab makes it dangerous in block strings.

The two frame difference really shows with this setup too. Now that I think about it, it’s kinda nasty.

You can escape the normal command throw after the jab by holding back (You’ll walk out of range). However this doesn’t work for ex version. BUT, if you’re opponent is walking back in anticipation of the command throw, he leaves himself open low.

The only other option is moves with invincibility. Because jab > ex command throw beats any normal less than 3 frames (everything). But if you were to mash dragon and Fei blocks it, he gets free rekkas, which knock down and lead the other person to the corner.

Also, there is a difference between block and hit. If you were to jab > ex command throw on hit, the grab will whiff because they are still in hit stun. So there’s a bit of choice involved.

Seriously, I think Fei is stupid good. I was thinking about making my own thread like I did for Gen, but I saw that Sam already did so I decided to spam his.

I can’t seem to find it but wasn’t there a thread that discussed different tenshin setups?
If not someone should start a new thread discussing the different possibilities

I’m going to try updating this based on initial reactions. lol. Bear with me.

Maaza, I’ll see if I can get one going (if someone doesn’t beat me first) on various Tenshin setups.

Tenshin is mostly a mind game setup. Conditioning your opponent into defensive and then employing Tenshin from there on.

hey great post man, as for the Dhalsim i fight really good dahlsims in SoCal, and since i rush allot, u can actually use his focus attack and hit him while he is doing the Jump away HP or standing HP, timing is of the essence bcuz once u hear that absorbtion u let go. especially if he does the jump HP, once u nail him get in there and give him a good beating. and stay on that aZZ!!

It’s clear that you buffer the standing jab, right? Like low forward > hadoken. Not jab, then command grab. You cancel the frames from jab, which would leave you + if it were blocked anyways. That’s why it’s so good.

Jab doesn’t seem to whiff on crouching ken after the jump in. ???

Edit: Standing jab whiffs on Chun-Li, but if you hit them with the jumpin first, it will connect if they are crouch blocking.

Yes, buffering the st.lp xx Ex Tenshin. You can be mashed out of Ex Tenshin right after a blocked lp. The window is there.

Standing jab after a JumpIn HK will whiff on characters with smaller hit boxes. Characters like, Chun/Ken/Blanka/Honda.

Blocked standing light punch = +2 frames
Ex Tenshin Startup = 12 frames

actually, jibbo’s right about the close standing jab not whiffing. if your opponent blocks the jumpin, and you go straight to jab, it wont whiff. it only whiffs if you start out with a low attack and then go standing jab. dunno why, but i just tested vs cammy, and chun. standing jab made contact vs both after a high block from both rh and mk jump ins. might be because of the frames transitioning from high block to low block.

go to training, and choose one of the short characters, and make fei the dummy. record him doing cross up mk or jump in rh, jabxxxtenshin. block the jump in, and it will make you block the jab.

also, nemesys, you have to adjust the math from that frame data. you remove the recovery frames when you cancell into another move, so it ends up being

  • 9 on block
  • 12 frame startup of tenshin
3 frame hole for a perfect jab to interupt

you cant buffer in normals like you can with reversal specials, so it becomes air tight versus mashers

I stand corrected.

Okay here is the Final match at least
Against good Bison plyr…

told ya that command grab was cheap

I was playin scrubby earlier matches ;no sleep :shake:( couldnt get my all combos out )

It never even occurred to me to cancel Tenshin off a normal instead of letting the normal hit, then doing Tenshin. Too used to playing Abel I guess  Seems like that will make tenshin quite a bit more dangerous.

Wow nice tenshin cancels  Eugene

excellent thread

good match and shit, but the real question is where the hell did that cab come from!? and im diggin those dash cancelled normals

I just need to keep playin this way up till finalround

DreamTR got it from Justin Wong during that SF4 Gamestop tourney earlier in the year or something like that… http://www.gamegalaxyarcade.com/

The Xbox 360 is inside instead of the original stuff…

shit, me too. i always assumed that standing jabs would auto whiff on certain characters. while we are discussing hitting, and non hitting jabs, im starting to think of some new setups

gimme one sec

Never thought of something so simple as to not hit a standing normal after a jump in. Guess I got too technical.

Many thanks, Eugene.

And Jibbo, sorry for doubting you.

No sweat. I was beginning to think we were playing a different game.

With all things considered, I truly believe Fei Long was broken before the patch. Seriously.
