How to not suck at Fei Long: An Advanced Fei Long Guide

As we are still talking about tenshin, not sure if this has been posted before sorry if it has but from the videos I’ve seen I haven’t seen anyone use it yet

What do you guys think of the following setup?

s.mp xx mk cw results in +2 frame advantage (150 dmg)
so you can follow that up with s.lp xx ex tenshin (s.lp would most likely be blocked)

If you catch your opponent with the tenshin it can easily lead to a total damage of 400+

does s.mp to mk cw connects? as far as i recall it doesn’t connect, you can connect with lk cw.

unless your cw land very close to him the tenshin will not connect

It does but the first hit of the cw does not land however it still does combo due to the stun and it does leave you in range to perform s.lp xx ex tenshin

I believe your thinking of s.hp xx lk cw which is in the trials, it does do slightly more damage however you gain no frame advantage

going to test it tonight, if it does then this should be cool.

also i just realized something that tenshin setups doesn’t really work against a reversal masher but of course we don’t use tenshin much against those players :stuck_out_tongue:

great match and great tenshin setups however I watched it a few times now but I didn’t seem to see the exact setup I mentioned maybe its in a different video? or my tired mind just didn’t catch it

Eugene, did you FADC after the Uppercut then ex tenshin or normal its hard to tell.

I had to watch that part 2 or 3 times to see. It was standing close HP FADC regular tenshin.

This is a very good guide, and I have learned a lot from it. I’ve started using Fei a couple of weeks ago and find it very interesting. But there’s a couple of problems in my game that I need help with.

  1. Anti air. Flame kick is just unreliable as an anti air. A lot of times I find myself getting hit when someone jumps at me, it makes me mad because I can see the flame on Fei’s leg so I know I did the move but I still get hit. I know that s.hp when close to the opponent is an upward fist, but I haven’t been able to use it effectively as an anti air as it always comes as far.hp.

  2. Focus attack. This is another problem because a lot of the time you can’t break their armor and you’re at the mercy of the attack. CW doesn’t come out fast enough or you can’t hit them with the first hit to break it, it’s infuriating that you don’t have something to prevent the abuse of FA.

  3. Proper use of overhead. I find myself on the problem that even if I hit them with the overhead, I can’t capitalize on it. What would be good options after nailing someone with the overhead?

  4. I can’t seem to cancel the c.mp or c.mk to super. I have managed to do s.mp to super. Can the motion for the super be done after the hit?

  1. time your flame kick so that you press the kick right before your opponent makes contact. flame kick has a different timing than dp’s. the dp’s hitbox starts higher than the shotos hittable box. so they can do it early, and go up and catch opponents. with fei, the flame kick’s hit box starts out horizontaly with your hittable box bein at your head. to capitalize, you have to make full use of the invulnerable frames by executing at the last moment

  2. fei’s true weakness. pick your spots, you can punnish wiffed FA’s from just about anywhere with fierce rekkas

  3. backdash after a connected overhead until you are sure they wont try to retaliate. if you force your opponent to sit after getting hit, you can mix in throws and blockstrings

4.practice

fei is flat out tough to play online. the delays for anti airing properly gets you kicked online, and you dont really get to condition your opponent during a single online fight

s.HK also works well as an AA, but you have to do it really early, and online input delay compounds that problem. Really, Fei is a pain in the ass to play online beyond punishing people for stupid shit all day.

Thanks for the response. Regretfully 99% of my gaming has to be online because I can’t find people near me to play with. I do have friends that give me green bar when I play with them so I believe with those lag is not that bad.

Juni looks like she will be a problem for Fei on the speed level

That’s Juri.
Juni and Juli are from SFA3 I believe.

What’s with these names anyway?

Juni, Juli Juri. ,Lumine … whoever

Fun thing you can do with Fei’s FA. I’m not sure how many guys you could do this against but you can bait Gen’s (mantis) Ultra with a FA. Just release the FA during the ultra set-up animation and you can beat it or trade. There might be other ultras you can beat like this.

Ok, after playing some more and finally able to play offline with somebody, the flame kick is actually a good AA. It was easier to use it effectively offline.

I was watching some of the videos and sometimes I could swear I see some people combo something out of c.mp. As I’ve seen in the threads the after c.mp you can do c.lp, is that the only option?

I’m still struggling to learn c.mk > super and I manage to do it if I do the motion for the super before the kick, where I do the first qcf and on the second qcf I hit the mk and it comes as a c.mk and right after I hit punch and the super comes out as a combo, but I cannot hit confirm it that way since I don’t have enough time to know if the c.mk connected or not.

I’ve been trying to train ChunLi to be my alt in the last few days. All I can say is, I wish she could use flame kicks.

FKick is a very good AA provided you use MK.
After confirmed c.MP, you are at +5. You’ve got several options from there. Check frame data for moves that have 5 frames startup or less.
(On counter, you’re at +8)

Yo Starnab, how do you go about getting CH frame adv? I know everything is basically +25% as far as damage/stun.
