I dunno theres chinese vampires, and if we are talking about making sense surely the animals shouldn’t be anthromorphic? Sense only takes you so far trying to apply it to stuff like this.
(Hell it sounds like they may be much cooler if they weren’t, I mean seeing a proper chinese dragon biting and clawing the **** out of stuff sounds a lot cooler then an anthromorphic version of it.)
This is the best idea you’ve had in this thread. A function like that would be genius. Arstal has basically nailed it in one too; he said what I was attempting to say but less rage-filled. If you want to keep the style, then play to your strengths: anime fans, kids, and furry fans.
I notice you changed the thread title too, smart. Tanuki-girl is far too ecchi-bait to look that young, it sends out bad signals.
It’s not that we aren’t accepting criticism on the art style and characters (the cast is undergoing a redesign as we speak) but if we change everything about the graphical style we may as well be making a totally new game, and it would defy the purpose of these two artists working together to create a game based on their designs.
Fair enough if we have to market it to a niche demographic, but it would be nice if anyone could feel comfortable playing this game. To achieve that, I’m just trying to gather information as how to make it as accessible and non-intimidating as possible.
For everyone giving advice to make Setsuna look older: I’m told that yes, she is going to be redesigned to look more like an adult. She is meant, however, to be shorter than average and one of the smaller characters.
@Idunno They did it with Okami and it worked. However, beasts and non-anthropomorphic creatures have less movement options and the way they stand would make the fighter quite awkward.
@Zinac the artistic style is something that’s set in stone at the moment. Try giving us advice on anything else gameplay related and I’m sure we’ll instantly take it to consideration.
@Yin umm…we actually DO have a girlish male character, but he is not a blatant cross-dresser like Bridget. He’s a gentle non-combat android designed for social service work and media/propaganda management and is going to play as a keep-away character with low damage but good defensive options. Based on this design, and since he’s based on the legend of the moon rabbit, his design ended up looking a bit effeminate and fans seemed to like him so we kept it the way it was. He is apparently the most popular of the characters we’ve revealed so far.
Maybe then for Setsuna do what Takashi did with Mikami- make her a little bustier, but narrow eyes so she looks older?
Oh- one more suggestion- at least use 4 buttons for normals, I really hate the A B C Drive of most dojin-styled games.
One other suggestion- have at least one “Hakumen-style” character who isn’t about combos but “old man skills”. Maybe something as extreme as NGBC Haohmaru.
We want to avoid giving the female characters big breasts because we don’t want the characters to be sexuallised. I dunno about narrow eyes. She’s the ‘cute’ female character in this game. Personality wise she’s a bit of a ditz, and the wide-eyed look is kind of typical of a tanuki. I’ll post her new design for feedback as soon as I get hold of the sketch.
4 buttons is a nice idea, but that means we have to create even more frames for each character. With only 1 animator on the team, that might get a bit expensive. If it helps, the D button is an attacking button anyway. They are just attacks that have special evade properties and can be cancelled into feints.
I like the idea of a hakumen character and I’m pretty sure we have at least one or two characters who could be considered to fit that “heavy damage, short combos” role. Dragon girl Xian is one of them.
Looked at your concept art. You might have a hard time getting anyone above the age of 13 to play this game. And for a PC fighting game that is going to be a very small user base. Only a certain group would find the art style appealing.
I’m going to give a list of good character designers you could try emulating. But, your artists probably won’t be able to emulate these styles. Artists that draw anime, usually can only draw anime.
Here is a list anyways of some good character designers. And a few are freelance and would probably be willing to work on your project assuming you pay.
Thanks for the suggestions. Personally, most of those I don’t find very appealing at all. They look too Disney-ish and/or ugly (at least I think so). A western style is not really that good for a game that focusses on chinese mythology with a sci-fi twist. The style that most of those people are using looks very dated.
Our artist is capable of mimicking that sort of style, but really, that would be awful and would just totally kill the concept.
Essentially, this game only came into development because it was inspired by the works of a chinese anime artist who has a rather unique character design style. Why would we go and change the visual style when half of the reason this project was started in the first place would be to try and popularise this particular artist?
Yeah, a lot(not all) of those links have some sort of “ultra american cartoon/disney” style… Something I would think even less successfull for a fighting game actually.
If one wanted a more standard digital game concept artist, you could just go to conceptart.org, cghub.com or gameartisans.org and pick one randomly.
Oh it wasn’t a serious suggestion just a resonse to the guy who made the comment that more human characters wouldn’t fit in, that said the guys who made Jurrassic Park Warpath for the ps1 did get it to work. (Still treasure them memorys of slamming other dinosaurs into the electrical fence that was on one of the stages and biting the **** out of them with that dinosuar with the long snout that was in Jurrassic Park 3 :lovin:)
furry = sexual? the fuck? you been spending all your time at yiff.com or some shit? or you just trying to be funny? sorry but fur don’t = sexual; sexual = sexual.
Hey! I remember this old fighter where all the characters were dinosaurs. The characters turned up in Mugen a lot. Is that the one you’re referring to?
It really don’t matter what you say is as much as how it will be perceived. I’m not saying you have to play to the stereotypes, but you do have to be aware of them.
At the very least this will be considered a furry game with those no matter what you do. That’s ok, you just gotta go with it though.
