anybody have any experience with painting a clear balltop?
i have a sick sick sick idea for my next stick i want to build and it involves painting a clear (probably white) balltop with an LED inside it to light it up.
So I’m spraying one with some valspar gold spray paint… and after the paint dried I put my first layer of clear on top and a huge crack formed, almost down to the balltop itself. It looked like the earth after an earthquake opens it up.
I’m thinking its because it was like 94 degrees outside and the clear says not to spray if its higher than 90… I’m going to try again later.
Anyone have this happen?
Two possible things:
- The paint was not completely dry
- You put too much clear coat in one go
The paint had dried for 48 hours so probably not that… but i was a little overzealous with the clear… im thinking thats the case. Ill take it slow this time. The crappy thing is I’ve painted 4 sticks perfectly to a super glossy finish, and this balltop is giving me hell. 
So how’s my old thread doing?
Cracking? Some paints will just crack. I don’t know why they just do. It’s not a type or color it’s random. Kinda sucks.

May I ask where you got your Valspar Clear Glosse Interior/Exterior at? My neighborhood Lowes never has any in stock & I can’t seem to find it at any other retailer. I bought another brand (olympic i think it may have been?) & it left a yellow hue…

Wow! I know that Necro’ing a thread is usually frowned upon, but I’m glad that this thread popped up at the top! This may be worth getting the ol’ airbrush out for. I’m hoping that my resin figure painting skills are still up to snuff.
Sorry to necro, but will colored Sharpies also work? I was thinking I’d just use those and not worry about paint drying, etc.
