How to go about choosing a character?

Hey guys,

I’m fairly new to fighting games as a whole (dabbled with SF4 but only really started playing with MVC3), and I’m enjoying SF X Tekken so far, but like with previous fighters I’ve been having a lot of trouble deciding which pair of characters to pick as my main team. I know so far Kazuya is one of them, but finding a partner I like enough to use with him has been really difficult.

This wouldn’t be too much of a problem, except the constant flipping between various characters means I can’t really focus on getting better with any of them, so my skill level stays fairly lousy. Has anyone any tips for how to decide which character(s) to pick up for this game? Anybody in particular who is notably good alongside Kaz? The only criteria I really have is that they should be mostly low in terms of execution, so ideally not characters with charge moves, but beyond that I’m willing to try pretty much anyone. Please don’t suggest to just use who I like most, because the entire problem is that I can’t decide between them.

The best thing to do is start by poking around with characters you like aesthetically until you find one who’s also entertaining to play – then finding an appropriate partner for them. It takes time to find a team you legitimately enjoy playing – but is good to play around with a lot of them until you can because its easier to invest in a character you actually like and who suits your natural play style.

When building a team there are a few things to consider:
[]Combos. Does character A allow character B to get maximum damage during tag combos?
[
]Matchups. Do the members of my team cover eachother’s weaknesses?
[]Tactics. Do my characters work well together in creating mix ups or helpful opportunities for the other?
[
]Strategy/Play Style. How do you intend to gain an advantage and push it for the win? Are these the best characters for that purpose?
Aside from that, if you’re looking for characters who require low execution I wouldn’t go for Kazuya. If you’re not too precise with a joystick I doubt you’ll be hitting Mist Step commands as consistently as you should be. However if you really enjoy the character and his play style, I would encourage you to practice until your execution improves, in which case your stipulation for an imprecise “press buttons and win” character would be void.

If you choose to stick with Kazuya, your options for a second character I would consider quite broad. Kazuya is a fairly well rounded fighter. As a point of reference, Poongko uses him with Ryu to great success. That is really all the guidance I can give you in regards to Kaz as I am not an expert on him at all.

Well, Kazuya can fit with pretty much anyone, to my knowledge. My brother uses Kaz with Nina, Poison, Kuma, and in rare occasions, Ken. He can set other characters up with tag cancels and the like, so finding one great partner for Kazuya is pretty much a grab bag. Who knows? Maybe one of the four I listed can suit you, because they’re not that hard to pick up, except Kuma, I think.
Again, I want to stress that I don’t use Kaz, I’ve only seen what he can do from experience.

the character you have most fun with.

I’ll initially try characters based off their story or appearance, but I also tend to go through a second test. I go through a handful of trials (around 10, whenever it gets difficult to do. At that point, I ask myself if I like their attacks and combos. If I do, then I’ll spend more time in trial mode to further understand the character.

I’m also having a hard time with this. I remember when I first started playing MVC I was a Wesker player. I didn’t realize Viper was my true favorite character till Ultimate. Basically one way is to watch high level play of a lot of characters.

Always pick the one with the divekick

Do what I do, pick a character that fits your personality or something else to do with yourself or better yet, just because they look or act the way you like, then just make them work.

Craig Marduk; Okay, he has the same name as me, mained.
Cody; Cool, He has a laid back kind of attitude and wants to just find a good fight, like me, mained.
Juri; She looks awesome and has a demented attitude, I’ve always liked Crazy characters, they have the best back stories, mained.
King; I remember playing him in Tekken 3, good enough, mained.

Just stuff like that man, don’t go with tier lists or what other players use and can use effectively, just go with a character you like as a character, and just make them work, any amount of time invested into a character can make them deadly in the hands of any player.

Apparently, Marduk is low tier according to Japan, yet,I have bodied so many people with good reads and his mind games.

Any character is a threat in the right hands.
