Hey I got a weekly USFIV tournament that is dominated by a good Bison player and I was just looking for either some tips or what characters would better counter his playstyle.
I’ve got a video here from the the final of the tournament we had before Christmas, he starts playing Bison at around 15.30.
The characters I use are Decapre, Chun Li and now Adon. You can find my videos on my channel in the signature. Any help would be appreciated, there is a special kind of saltiness that comes from getting to the grand final through winners and then losing 6 games in a row to Bison.
with chun, you can play a very strong run away game that he cant really keep up with. Its very difficult for Bison to mount a comeback, so once chun gets the life lead she can just stay away from him. Also, while you’re running away, lesser bisons take stupid risks to get in, which means youll get good damage on him. Better Bisons will be more patient, using normals, but cr.mp beats nearly everything he has.
Decapre is generally very strong and Bison isn’t a particularly bad match up for her. If I were you I would stick with Decapre and keep practicing. Admittedly, Chun Li would do better in this particular match up, however IMO in the long run you’re a lot better off with Decapre. Just depends who you’re more comfortable using. Also I find that the dude you’re fighting goes to air in pretty risky places. If I were you, I’d cut down the mid range fireballs and try to focus more on your anti air.
Bison loses to lameness in that he has trouble advancing, but his biggest weakness is that his damage output is terrible. If you know how to link your high damage combos and ultra links, and if you hit Bison at least the same amount of times he hits you, you will win and he will lose. It’s that simple.
Bison, once you consider his payoff when he scores a hit, vs. how much damage he risks if he gets hit per attempt that he makes, on average, he get’s the short end of the stick.
Therefore, playing against Bison is all about making your hits count. What you will need to know though, is the reversal points, and where and when to fish for damage. Once you know that, you will own most Bison players.
The vast majority of Bison’s special moves are either punishable or counterable. He has safe lk scissors, pokes, and maybe a crusher or head stomp here and there, but he is very unsafe to play outside of his footsies. Understand that you need to get the life lead and force him to destroy himself coming in. Bison specializes in laming you out, so you need to do the same to him.
He also has very poor ability to deal with knockdowns unless he uses meter to try and escape. Meaties are a good way to pressure him. He also sucks at dealing with pressure, and his EX moves are very situational as escape options or reversals.
Since he lacks comeback potential, once you get the life lead just lame him out. Just be careful not to corner yourself, because that is where he can ware you down best. Jump back in the corner to bait him to stick a leg out of scissor kick, at which point you can counter.
I would assume that Sagat and Ryu have very similar game plans against Bison. If I get a knockdown on Bison in the corner (with Ryu), is it generally better to keep the pressure on him or keep him in the corner? If I pressure him, I’m worried about ending up in the corner myself and if I try to keep him in the corner, I feel he’s too fast and flies around too much and he’s not in the corner for long.
A couple things with Chun, you can reversal MK super all of his scissor kicks on block now. Chipping with regular legs (cr. HP xx Legs if you know how to execute that) is a good way to get meter for that.
Also st. HP is good in this matchup more than st. MP imo because the speed matches his good poke (st. MK) and better for whiff punishing the recovery of his pokes. Cr. MP from the right range will beat a lot of his buttons. St. MP is still good, but I wouldn’t use it as liberally in this match as in other matchups. St. MP -> st. HP is actually a decent mid-range frame trap and combos on counter hit.
Don’t forget you can also use Red Focus now to keep him honest on scissors kick pressure (or make him eat a huge chunk of damage if he keeps at it).
If I were Chun Li, I would bait him with Kikokens. If he Bison Warps, just kick him, or throw him, or do anything. Just repeat this process against any Bison.
