So when ever I play against shoto characters, they all seem to mash. How can I deal with wakeup mashers, most of the time when I try to safe jump I still get hit. Also, when ever I’m in the middle of a block string combo, their DP seems to come through all the time. Frame trapping doesn’t seem to work either as I’ll just eat a DP. Maybe I’m frame trapping incorrectly?
I’ve had the same issue. I have issues pressuring shoto characters properly because once I establish pressure, I get DP’d if I get careless. Frame trapping doesn’t seem to work against Shoto mashers, as most DPs come out faster than a jab or at least have invincibility on start-up, so it seems like they come out faster than a jab, so a mashed DP will usually beat out any frame-trap attempts.
My only suggestion is to try and bait out the DP. I’ve noticed in my experience against mashers, they’ll mash DP and it’ll come out after two attacks (if they’re blocking). So, to bait it out, try jabbing twice and then blocking. Once they DP, punish accordingly. And if they’re mashing on wake-up, try to bait them into DP-ing; I like to crack kick over and over again over their head, or do my overhead, or empty jump, and then back up at the last second to block. I find that I’ll block the mashed DP, and will be out of range for a grab if I do it right (so you can punish a grab attempt if they don’t end up DP-ing, and you can’t grab someone out of a DP). Obviously this may not work against high-level players, but at that point they probably won’t be mashing DP anyway.
Someone else probably has a better strategy, but this is my suggestion. You can also go to training mode, and record the CPU mashing DP, and try to find a way to deal with a mashed DP on wake-up.
Thanks for the advice! I too noticed that DP comes out after 2 jabs, probably because I’m trying to switch to cr.lk by that time. I think baiting is probably the best thing to do.
lol what ReturnOfSanta said. whenever i play online, i try to figure out in the first round, whether or not they are scum and like to mash DP. ill try frame traps and be sloppy on my block strings on purpose to see if they do it or not; if they do, i just jab jab block > punish. if they dont, continue as usual. it really depends on how much of a scumbag they are, and thats what i like to find out in the first round.
The above posts nailed it - jab, jab, wait, and HAMMER them. Best move forward and tap jab then block on their wakeup - 50% of the time they’ll mash on wake-up and you’ll get to HAMMER them again.
After a few punishes some players stop only to start again the next round or when they get low on life - once a masher always a masher: if it gets close they’ll mash, if they got 2 bars they’ll mash, if they got 2 bars and Ultra they’ll DEFINATELY mash it out any chance they get. Learn the likely scenario’s and avoid or bait them. Much like wake-up Ultra’s - scrab tactic or not, you gotta respect the possibility or you’re going to get hurt.
If you know they’ll mash out a DP every time you safejump then just don’t hit a button. You’ll land in time to block it and then can punish them with ease.
To be honest playing against shotos is really fun for me just because baiting and punishing DPs is really really easy for me. It’s a crutch used by a lot of bad players and exploiting it will let you roll all over them.
You can’t safe jump a 3f reversal because if you touch a button during the air, you have 4 recovery frame on landing, so the reversal stuff you. But you can time early your jump in to provoke it.
jab-> jab-> walk backwards for split second-> f+mp
after the two jabs, if they are mashing a DP it will come out during the short time you walk backwards, then throw out the f+mp to stuff or counter-hit anything button they try to touch if they don’t DP and think you are walking back/letting up your assault
